This book was released on 1991 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains seventy-five interviews with Fordham administrators, faculty, and staff who share their rememberances of the University. The occasion for the project is Fordham's Sesquientennial celebration as the University completes its one-hundred and fiftieth year and the excerpts range from Fordham's earlier days to current events. Collectively, this book is an informal history of Fordham and its people, both as a community which is vital and growing, and a university whose past is rich in tradition. In a "Message from the President," Rev. Joseph A. O'Hare, S.J. summarizes the importance of the project in this way, "A university, like any great institution, transcends the experience of any single generation. At the same time, the people who make up the university shape the meaning of its tradition and give it heart and voice. Through this Oral History Project, many of the men and women who played important roles in Fordham's history express their own memories of the University. Each adds a special angle of vision on the many-sided life of Fordham. Their words, captured in living testimony and recorded in these excerpts, keep the sense of Fordham's past alive and help us translate that past into a promise for the future." For readers associated with the Fordham Community this volume captures this one-time event in a unique way. To any reader it offers an entertaining, insiders view of history of the Jesuit University of New York.

Book From Maverick to Mainstream

Download or read book From Maverick to Mainstream written by David J. Langum and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1847 in Lebanon, Tennessee, the Cumberland School of Law holds a unique place in the history of American legal education. As the premier law school in the South in the nineteenth century, Cumberland trained two United States Supreme Court justices, nine senators, a secretary of state, and scores of other federal and state judges, representatives, and governors. Cumberland is among the oldest law schools in the southeast and is the first law school to have been sold outright from one university to another, passing from Cumberland University to Birmingham, Alabama's Howard College (now Samford University) in 1961. This book is a comprehensive narrative analysis of the school's pedagogical and social history in the context of legal education throughout the South and the nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the enormous changes that took place at Baylor University from 1991 to 2003, as seen through the perceptive eyes of its provost at the time, Donald D. Schmeltekopf. On the front end was the charter revision, a change that permanently restructured the legal governance of the university. On the back end was Baylor 2012, a grand vision for the university issued by the Board of Regents on September 21, 2001. There were several critical crossroads along the way to what has now been created at Baylor, a Christian research university, one of a kind among church-related universities in the Protestant orbit. These memoirs tell the story of this transformation from the perspective of one who was leading at the crossroads.

Book Bishops Bourbons and Big Mules

Download or read book Bishops Bourbons and Big Mules written by J. Barry Vaughn and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tells the story of how the Episcopal Church gained influence over Alabama’s cultural, political, and economic arenas despite being a denominational minority in the state The consensus of southern historians is that, since the Second Great Awakening, evangelicalism has dominated the South. This is certainly true when one considers the extent to which southern culture is dominated by evangelical rhetoric and ideas. However, in Alabama one non-evangelical group has played a significant role in shaping the state’s history. J. Barry Vaughn explains that, although the Episcopal Church has always been a small fraction (around 1 percent) of Alabama’s population, an inordinately high proportion, close to 10 percent, of Alabama’s significant leaders have belonged to this denomination. Many of these leaders came to the Episcopal Church from other denominations because they were attracted to the church’s wide degree of doctrinal latitude and laissez-faire attitude toward human frailty. Vaughn argues that the church was able to attract many of the state’s governors, congressmen, and legislators by positioning itself as the church of conservative political elites in the state--the planters before the Civil War, the “Bourbons” after the Civil War, and the “Big Mules” during industrialization. He begins this narrative by explaining how Anglicanism came to Alabama and then highlights how Episcopal bishops and congregation members alike took active roles in key historic movements including the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Civil Rights Movement. Bishops, Bourbons, and Big Mules closes with Vaughn’s own predictions about the fate of the Episcopal Church in twenty-first-century Alabama.
