As a part of the curriculum designed for this project the authors created what they called micro-programs. These micro-programs were an attempt to give students the flavor of using a large AI program without all the difficulty normally associated with learning a complex system written by another person. Using the authors’ parser, ELI, or story understanding program, SAM, they also gave students the micro versions of these programs, which were very simple versions that operated in roughly the same way as their larger versions, but without all the frills. Students were asked to add pieces to the programs and otherwise modify them in order to learn how they worked.

Sam feels Kate can't handle living in the forest alone, so he starts checking on her periodically, but he learns that she is doing quite well in spite of having to deal with the vigilantes who have come into the forest to find a gold mine that they believe only requires picking the gold up from the ground. When the vigilantes kill the old couple who own the mine, Kate and Sam step in to try to make the men leave. They feel they have gotten rid of all the men, but one of them manages to escape.

You will laugh and cry and your spirit will fly. Beneath Archers Tree has been read by some of the smartest people in this country, some worked for NASA, some were professors, one, is one of the author's hero's. This hero is Russell Means the Indian activist and actor and author of, “Where White Men Fear To Tread.” A book every American should take a moment and read. Mr. Means read a chapter from Beneath Archers Tree, the chapter was Stain Glass Sky, he sent a note saying how much he liked it.
