Book Sam Shepard

Download or read book Sam Shepard written by John J. Winters and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “John Winters offers a master class in literary sleuthing, untangling the many lives and unearthing the origin story of America’s foremost Renaissance man of letters.” —Kelly Horan, coauthor of Devotion and Defiance With more than fifty–five plays to his credit—including the 1979 Pulitzer Prize–winning Buried Child, an Oscar nod for his portrayal of Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff, and an onscreen persona that’s been aptly summed up as “Gary Cooper in denim”—Sam Shepard’s impact on American theater and film ranks with the greatest playwrights and actors of the past half–century. Sam Shepard: A Life gets to the heart of Sam Shepard, presenting a compelling and comprehensive account of his life and work. In a new epilogue, added by the author after Shepard’s untimely death in July of 2017, John J. Winters offers a glimpse into the enigmatic author’s last days, when very few knew he was suffering from ALS. “An excellent biography . . . Mr. Winters is especially good on the backstage of one of Mr. Shepard’s most frequently revived works, True West . . . Mr. Winters has an interesting story to tell, and he recounts it ably, bringing us close to a figure who, he admits, avoids intimacy.” —The Wall Street Journal “A new, thoroughly researched biography . . . Winters does indeed capture a personality more anxious and self–doubting than previous biographers have grasped.” —The Washington Post “Meticulously presents the facts of Shepard’s complex life along with incisive descriptions and analyses of diverse productions of Shepard’s demanding and innovative plays . . . Winters portrays Shepard as a magnetic, enigmatic, and multitalented artist drawing on a deep well of loneliness and self–questioning, keen attunement to the zeitgeist, and penetrating insight into human nature.” —Booklist (starred review)

Book excerpt: SAM DOLAN is a young man coming to terms with his life in the process and aftermath of making his first film. He has a difficult relationship with his father, B-movie actor Booth Dolan—a boisterous, opinionated, lying lothario whose screen legacy falls somewhere between cult hero and pathetic. Allie, Sam’s dearly departed mother, was a woman whose only fault, in Sam’s eyes, was her eternal affection for his father. Also included in the cast of indelible characters: a precocious, frequently violent half-sister; a conspiracy-theorist second wife; an Internet-famous roommate; a contractor who can’t stop expanding his house; a happy-go-lucky college girlfriend and her husband, a retired Yankees catcher; the morose producer of a true-crime show; and a slouching indie-film legend. Not to mention a tragic sex monster. Unraveling the tumultuous, decades-spanning story of the Dolan family’s friends, lovers, and adversaries, Double Feature is about letting go of everything—regret, resentment, dignity, moving pictures, the dead—and taking it again from the top. Against the backdrop of indie filmmaking, college campus life, contemporary Brooklyn, and upstate New York, Owen King’s epic debut novel combines propulsive storytelling with mordant wit and brims with a deep understanding of the trials of ambition and art, of relationships and life, and of our attempts to survive it all.

Book Inpatient Behavior Therapy for Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Inpatient Behavior Therapy for Children and Adolescents written by D.J. Kolko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavior therapists on child and adolescent psychiatric inpatient units have played an increasing role in the treatment of a wide range of disorders. Indeed, behavioral assessment and treatment strategies in these settings have been applied to a diversity of problems, including depression, mental retardation, autism, conduct disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anorexia, and bulimia. More recently, the heuristic value of behavioral methods with substance abuse, pediatric pain, and child maltreatment has been documented as well. Because of the multifaceted and complex challenges posed by children and adoles cents who reach inpatient units, behavioral clinicians have worked close ly with other professionals (e. g. , psychiatrists, social workers, psychi atric nurses) in an effort to provide broad-spectrum, comprehensive intervention. However, as a burgeoning body of clinical research attests, the significant contribution of behavior therapy to successful treatment outcome is now indisputable. Yet, surprisingly few texts have been published concerning inpa tient treatment of children and adolescents. The few extant efforts in this area have not covered the broad array of issues and diagnostic popula tions treated, nor have they considered the pragmatic day-to-day diffi culties encountered by behaviorally oriented practitioners working in child and adolescent inpatient settings. This text is an attempt to remedy such shortcomings by providing a comprehensive yet practical approach to the functions of behavior therapists on inpatient psychiatric services for children and youth.

Book Incarceration without Conviction

Download or read book Incarceration without Conviction written by Mikaela Rabinowitz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-14 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incarceration Without Conviction addresses an understudied fairness flaw in the criminal justice system. On any given day, approximately 500,000 Americans are in pretrial detention in the US, held in local jails not because they are considered a flight or public safety risk, but because they are poor and cannot afford bail or a bail bond. Over the course of a year, millions of Americans cycle through local jails, most there for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. These individuals are disproportionately Black and poor. This book draws on extensive legal data to highlight the ways in which pretrial detention drives guilty pleas and thus fuels mass incarceration--and the disproportionate impact on Black Americans. It shows the myriad harms that being detained wreaks on people’s lives and well-being, regardless of whether or not those who are detained are ever convicted. Rabinowitz argues that pretrial detention undermines the presumption of innocence in the American criminal justice system and, in so doing, erodes the very meaning of innocence.
