Download or read book Los Verdaderos Ngeles written by Gerardo Villalobos Aguilar and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Manufacturing Consent written by Edward S. Herman and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2011-07-06 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A "compelling indictment of the news media's role in covering up errors and deceptions" (The New York Times Book Review) due to the underlying economics of publishing—from famed scholars Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky. With a new introduction. In this pathbreaking work, Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky show that, contrary to the usual image of the news media as cantankerous, obstinate, and ubiquitous in their search for truth and defense of justice, in their actual practice they defend the economic, social, and political agendas of the privileged groups that dominate domestic society, the state, and the global order. Based on a series of case studies—including the media’s dichotomous treatment of “worthy” versus “unworthy” victims, “legitimizing” and “meaningless” Third World elections, and devastating critiques of media coverage of the U.S. wars against Indochina—Herman and Chomsky draw on decades of criticism and research to propose a Propaganda Model to explain the media’s behavior and performance. Their new introduction updates the Propaganda Model and the earlier case studies, and it discusses several other applications. These include the manner in which the media covered the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement and subsequent Mexican financial meltdown of 1994-1995, the media’s handling of the protests against the World Trade Organization, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund in 1999 and 2000, and the media’s treatment of the chemical industry and its regulation. What emerges from this work is a powerful assessment of how propagandistic the U.S. mass media are, how they systematically fail to live up to their self-image as providers of the kind of information that people need to make sense of the world, and how we can understand their function in a radically new way.

Book excerpt: One man's extraordinary encounters with God. God wants us to stay plugged into Him so that we can live a supernatural life of victory. We should expect this to be "normal" Christianity. This book is filled with stories of what the miraculous looks like in daily life and it gives key points to help you walk in the supernatural. A Miraculous Life tells of the miracles that Bruce Van Natta has personally experienced, including when he received a hug from Jesus at age five, when God called his name in a church service at nineteen, and when he saw the angels sent to save his life during an out-of-body experience at the point of death. Each encounter is given as an example of the knowledge and insights he has learned within the context of Scripture. The book also includes other real-life testimonies that show how God's supernatural power is released. You will be amazed to read of the miracles taking place today: blind eyes and deaf ears being opened, tumors vanishing, demons being cast out, and captives being set free from heartache, pain, depression, and fear. These faith-building stories and biblical references will help you live "supernaturally victorious" in every area of your life, regardless of the circumstances.

Download or read book The Color of Gender written by Zillah R. Eisenstein and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1994-03-18 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eisenstein argues clearly and forcefully for the importance of reinventing a comprehensive rights discourse through the recognition of individual specified needs."—Donna J. Haraway, University of California, Santa Cruz "Inspired by events in Eastern Europe and building on her earlier, pathbreaking critiques of patriarchy, neoconservatism, and neoliberalism, Eisenstein asks: how shall a white feminist living in the U.S. in the 1990s position herself in a world where so much has changed yet so much remains the same? Her answer, daring and persuasive, steers through the post-1989 debates in Eastern Europe over the meaning of democracy; the searing race-gender controversies of recent U.S. politics—the Gulf War, AIDS, abortion, affirmative action, the Hill-Thomas hearings; and finally to the conclusion that we must radically redefine, not reject, liberal concepts like "rights," "equality," and "privacy."—Rosalind P. Petchesky, Hunter College, author of Abortion and Woman's Choice
Download or read book Between civilization barbarism written by Francine Masiello and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evoking the famous watchwords of Argentine president Domingo Sarmiento (1868–74), Between Civilization and Barbarism explores the positioning of women within the Argentine nation and argues that women neither sought alliance with the “civilizing” agenda of leading statesmen nor found identity in the extreme poses of “barbarism,” to which some intellectuals had condemned them. Instead, women used literary and political texts to surpass the tightly outlined roles assigned to them. Beginning with literary and journalistic texts written by and about women from the time of Sarmiento, Francine Masiello traces strategic shifts in the discourse on gender at moments of national crisis. She considers not only novels and guides to female behavior written by and for privileged women but also newspapers and political tracts produced by women of the working class. Extending her study into the urban expansion and modernization of the 1920s, Masiello explores the nature of gender relations posited in treatises on crime and public disorder and in the texts of avant-garde and social-realist writers. In addressing such representations of women, as well as the effects of ideology and history on writing, Masiello offers bold new insights into the development of Latin American women’s literature and illuminates the role of women in forming the culture of present-day Argentina.
Download or read book The Disorder of Women written by Carole Pateman and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carole Pateman is one of the leading political theorists writing today. This wide-ranging volume brings together for the first time a selection of her work on democratic theory and feminist criticism of mainstream political theory. The volume includes substantial discussions of problems of democracy, citizenship and the welfare state, including the largely unrecognized difficulties surrounding women's participation. The inclusion of essays from both a mainstream and feminist perspective provides concrete examples of the differences between these two approaches to democracy, to questions of consent and political obligation, and to the relationship between the private and public spheres. This scholarly and highly challenging work will be of interest to students and researchers in political theory, political science, women's studies and sociology.
