Radcliffe explores the relationship of rural indigenous women in Ecuador to the development policies and actors that are ostensibly there to help ameliorate social and economic inequality. Radcliffe finds that development policies’s inability to recognize and reckon with the legacies of colonialism reinforces long-standing social hierarchies, thereby reproducing the very poverty and disempowerment they are there to solve. This ineffectiveness results from failures to acknowledge the local population's diversity and a lack of accounting for the complex intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, class, and geography. As a result, projects often fail to match beneficiaries' needs, certain groups are made invisible, and indigenous women become excluded from positions of authority. Drawing from a mix of ethnographic fieldwork and postcolonial and social theory, Radcliffe centers the perspectives of indigenous women to show how they craft practices and epistemologies that critique ineffective development methods, inform their political agendas, and shape their strategic interventions in public policy debates.

Book excerpt: In 1997, when Lucia Guerra-Reyes began research in Peru, she observed a profound disconnect between the birth care desires of health personnel and those of indigenous women. Midwives and doctors would plead with her as the anthropologist to "educate women about the dangerous inadequacy of their traditions." They failed to see how their aim of achieving low rates of maternal mortality clashed with the experiences of local women, who often feared public health centers, where they could experience discrimination and verbal or physical abuse. Mainly, the women and their families sought a "good" birth, which was normally a home birth that corresponded with Andean perceptions of health as a balance of bodily humors. Peru's Intercultural Birthing Policy of 2005 was intended to solve these longstanding issues by recognizing indigenous cultural values and making biomedical care more accessible and desirable for indigenous women. Yet many difficulties remain. Guerra-Reyes also gives ethnographic attention to health care workers. She explains the class and educational backgrounds of traditional birth attendants and midwives, interviews doctors and health care administrators, and describes their interactions with local families. Interviews with national policy makers put the program in context.

Book excerpt: Latin America's Indigenous writers have long labored under the limits of colonialism, but in the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries, they have constructed a literary corpus that moves them beyond those parameters. Gloria E. Chacon considers the growing number of contemporary Indigenous writers who turn to Maya and Zapotec languages alongside Spanish translations of their work to challenge the tyranny of monolingualism and cultural homogeneity. Chacon argues that these Maya and Zapotec authors reconstruct an Indigenous literary tradition rooted in an Indigenous cosmolectics, a philosophy originally grounded in pre-Columbian sacred conceptions of the cosmos, time, and place, and now expressed in creative writings. More specifically, she attends to Maya and Zapotec literary and cultural forms by theorizing kab'awil as an Indigenous philosophy. Tackling the political and literary implications of this work, Chacon argues that Indigenous writers' use of familiar genres alongside Indigenous language, use of oral traditions, and new representations of selfhood and nation all create space for expressions of cultural and political autonomy. Chacon recognizes that Indigenous writers draw from universal literary strategies but nevertheless argues that this literature is a vital center for reflecting on Indigenous ways of knowing and is a key artistic expression of decolonization.

En este sentido, cabría decir que se impone la necesidad de un entendimiento intercultural entre las ideas de cuerpo y persona, y el intercambio de saberes médicos que en cada lugar se reconocen para procurar la salud. Un debate en el que desgraciadamente suele pesar el etnocentrismo de diferentes profesionales de la salud procedentes de un sistema biomédico occidental que muchas veces ignora estas concepciones diferentes, ocasionalmente las desprecia o se muestra incapaz de integrarlas a sus propios modelos. El volumen busca explorar la posibilidad y complejidad de las actuaciones sanitarias entre agentes y usuarios de culturas y contextos diferenciados de América Latina. Su propósito no es otro que el de favorecer la reflexión sobre aplicaciones teóricas y prácticas que la perspectiva intercultural puede ofrecer en el dominio de la salud, un tema tan en boga y a la vez tan necesitado de revisión crítica.

Confirmándose las predicas y profecías dejadas por los sabios de Amaruka, quienes dijeron que después 5 siglos "regresará la luz en mitad de la noche". Así ha sucedido, hay muchos elementos y situaciones que confirman aquello. Uno de estos, es lo que se ha dado en llamar Buen Vivir, traducido así desde las lenguas andinas: Sumak Kawsay y Suma Qamaña.El Buen Vivir emerge para el mundo como una alterativa (de alteridad) a todo nivel. Es un paradigma que relativiza a los paradigmas normalizados u oficializados como únicos o mejores. Se abre paso como una disruptiva para dar nuevas luces al oscurantismo imperante.El extractivismo epistémico y político pretendió cooptarlo, cosificarlo, y desarmar al Sumak Kawsay (Buen Vivir indígena); pero, sigue firme, latente, y sus ramas y hojas se van expandiendo. Sus aromas van llegando por toda la Madre Tierra y despertando a nuevos caminantes.El eurocentrismo pretendió resignificarlo pero ha caído por su propio peso, y el Buen Vivir sigue generando esperanzas para enfrentar la pandemia del coronavirus, como a la pandemia del capitalismo y de la civilización en general.El Buen Vivir indígena va posicionándose y los entuertos que querían lucrar de él, se han echado para atrás y va refloreciendo en un nuevo nivel, dentro de sus propios matices y raíces. Retoma el camino de miles de años transitados para continuar tejiendo nuevos diseños, para hacer realidad un Nuevo Tiempo basado en el principio de armonía de complementarios.
