Book Research Developments in Saline Agriculture

Download or read book Research Developments in Saline Agriculture written by Jagdish Chander Dagar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 926 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil and water salinity is a major challenge for the agricultural community and policy makers in terms of meeting the burgeoning population’s demand for food and other agricultural commodities. In coastal regions, climate change and sea level rise will aggravate the problem with more and more areas becoming saline due to intrusion of sea water. As such there is a pressing need for modern tools and innovative techniques for the identification of salty soils and poor-quality waters, crop production, soil reclamation and lowering the water table in waterlogged areas. Tackling next-generation problems such as contamination of soil and underground water due to fluoride and arsenic, as well as developing multi-stress tolerant crops is also a high priority. Further, techniques for domesticating halophytes, mangrove-based aquacultures, using seaweed cultures as agricultural crops and integrated farming systems need to be perfected. This book addresses all these aspects in detail, highlighting the diverse solutions to tackle the complex problem of salinity and waterlogging and safer management of poor-quality waters. With chapters written by leading experts, it is a valuable resource for researchers planning future investigations, policy makers, farmers and other stakeholders, and for students wanting insights into vital issues of environment.

Book Geospatial Technologies for Land Degradation Assessment and Management

Download or read book Geospatial Technologies for Land Degradation Assessment and Management written by R. S. Dwivedi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-17 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The constant growth of the world’s population and the decline of the availability of land and soil resources are global concerns for food security. Other concerns are the decrease in productivity and delivery of essential ecosystems services because of the decline of soil quality and health by a range of degradation processes. Key soil properties like soil bulk density, organic carbon concentration, plant available water capacity, infiltration rate, air porosity at field moisture capacity, and nutrient reserves, are crucial properties for soil functionality which refers to the capacity of soil to perform numerous functions. These functions are difficult to measure directly and are estimated through indices of soil quality and soil health. Soil degradation, its extent and severity, can also be estimated by assessing indices of soil quality and health. "Geospatial Technology for Land Degradation Assessment and Management" uses satellite imagery and remote sensing technologies to measure landscape parameters and terrain attributes. Remote sensing and geospatial technologies are important tools in assessing the extent and the severity of land and soil degradation, their temporal changes, and geospatial distribution in a timely and cost-effective manner. The knowledge presented in the book by Dr. R.S. Dwivedi shows how remote sensing data can be utilized for inventorying, assessing, and monitoring affected ecosystems and how this information can be integrated in the models of different local settings. Through many land degradations studies, land managers, researchers, and policymakers will find practical applications of geospatial technologies and future challenges. The information presented is also relevant to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations towards global food security.

Book Sustainable Management of Land Resources

Download or read book Sustainable Management of Land Resources written by G.P. Obi Reddy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 823 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The depletion of land resources is one of the greatest challenges for mankind in this millennium. Shrinking land resources, weather aberrations, deterioration of land quality, and the globalization and liberalization of market economies have become intertwined to influence the sustainable management of land resources and land use plans. This important volume, Sustainable Management of Land Resources: An Indian Perspective, addresses these challenges. This comprehensive volume, covering important research, much of it gathered with the use of new technology, tools, and applications, is organized into four sections: (add bullets) land resource inventory and characterization geospatial technologies in land resource mapping and management soil nutrient status and management land use planning and livelihood security The volume looks at how scientists translate their knowledge and experience in sustainable land resources and management into implementable policy decisions, with a particular focus on India. Since India is an agrarian economy, the land resources assume a very critical role affecting the livelihood of a vast majority of populace in the country. The information gathered—and the methods by which it is gathered—is applicable globally. This comprehensive publication will be highly useful for the researchers, academicians, extension workers, policymakers, planners, officials of land resources survey, planning and management institutions/agencies/departments, and others.

Book Natural and Anthropogenic Disasters

Download or read book Natural and Anthropogenic Disasters written by M.K. Jha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major challenges of the 21st century faced by human beings are how to achieve water security, food security, energy security and environmental security. Owing to enhanced natural/anthropogenic disasters worldwide, these challenges become much more complicated and daunting especially for developing countries. Therefore, it is important to highlight the risk of different disasters as well as the modern tools and techniques for minimizing disaster incidence and losses. Disaster management being highly multidisciplinary in nature, a comprehensive book dealing with different aspects of disaster management, and encompassing important disasters faced by humankind is presently not available. This book is an attempt to fulfill this gap. It provides clear, comprehensive, and up-to-date information about different facets of disaster management along with salient case studies. The book highlights the current status of disaster management focusing on developing nations, discusses vital issues such as climate change and sustainable development, modern approaches and tools/techniques, and the challenges of and future R&D needs for sustainable disaster management.

Book Advances in the Assessment and Monitoring of Salinization and Status of Biosaline Agriculture

Download or read book Advances in the Assessment and Monitoring of Salinization and Status of Biosaline Agriculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Fao Inter-Departmental Working Group. This book was released on 2009 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil salinization and sodication have been identified as major processes of land degradation and loss of agricultural production. The high costs of measuring salinization and sodication, as well as inconsistencies in data collection and reporting methods, have resulted in incomplete – and often contradictory – information on the extent and distribution of salt-affected soils at country, regional and global levels. Nevertheless, scientists and government authorities consider that the problem is extensive and growing. The causes of salinity/sodicity, which vary between countries and regions, need to be identified, assessed and monitored carefully so that they can be managed and controlled.
