Book Spinning Mambo into Salsa

  • Author : Juliet McMains
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2015-05-01
  • ISBN : 0199324662
  • Pages : 425 pages

Download or read book Spinning Mambo into Salsa written by Juliet McMains and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably the world's most popular partnered social dance form, salsa's significance extends well beyond the Latino communities which gave birth to it. The growing international and cross-cultural appeal of this Latin dance form, which celebrates its mixed origins in the Caribbean and in Spanish Harlem, offers a rich site for examining issues of cultural hybridity and commodification in the context of global migration. Salsa consists of countless dance dialects enjoyed by varied communities in different locales. In short, there is not one dance called salsa, but many. Spinning Mambo into Salsa, a history of salsa dance, focuses on its evolution in three major hubs for international commercial export-New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. The book examines how commercialized salsa dance in the 1990s departed from earlier practices of Latin dance, especially 1950s mambo. Topics covered include generational differences between Palladium Era mambo and modern salsa; mid-century antecedents to modern salsa in Cuba and Puerto Rico; tension between salsa as commercial vs. cultural practice; regional differences in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami; the role of the Web in salsa commerce; and adaptations of social Latin dance for stage performance. Throughout the book, salsa dance history is linked to histories of salsa music, exposing how increased separation of the dance from its musical inspiration has precipitated major shifts in Latin dance practice. As a whole, the book dispels the belief that one version is more authentic than another by showing how competing styles came into existence and contention. Based on over 100 oral history interviews, archival research, ethnographic participant observation, and analysis of Web content and commerce, the book is rich with quotes from practitioners and detailed movement description.

Book Beyond Salsa Bass

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kevin Moore
  • Publisher : CreateSpace
  • Release : 2014-05-31
  • ISBN : 9781492375692
  • Pages : 440 pages

Download or read book Beyond Salsa Bass written by Kevin Moore and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-05-31 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doubling as a history and music appreciation course, each volume of the Beyond Salsa Bass series is significantly longer than the corresponding volume of Beyond Salsa Piano. At 440 pages, Beyond Salsa Bass Vol. 3 is by far the longest of the 26 Beyond Salsa books and the first to extensively cover New York and Puerto Rican salsa and pre-salsa as well as Latin jazz. Its audio product (separate purchase) has 616 tracks (a generous selection of 60 free audio tracks is also available by download). The book includes a bass tumbao for every piano tumbao in each of Volumes 3 and 4 of the Beyond Salsa Piano series, but it also includes hundreds of bass tumbaos from and historical analyses of areas of Latin music not covered in the piano series: Puerto Rico, New York, Latin Jazz, the Cuban descargas and additional aspects of the Cuban music of 1959-1989, i.e., from the Cuban Revolution to the Fall of the Berlin Wall. In addition to exercises in music notation, the bass series delves far more deeply into history and the biographies and discographies of individual artists than either the piano or percussion series. The bass series could be thought of as a thorough general history of Latin popular music, told from the perspective of the bass student.

Book 100 Ultimate Jazz Riffs for Piano Keyboards

Download or read book 100 Ultimate Jazz Riffs for Piano Keyboards written by Andrew D. Gordon and published by A.D.G. Productions. This book was released on with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the runaway success of the 100 Ultimate Blues Riffs, Andrew D. Gordon's latest book "100 Ultimate Jazz Riffs" consists of, as the title suggests, 100 Jazz riffs based on common chord progressions used in jazz such as the II-V-I, III-VI-II-V etc. There are five separate ections: Jazz Swing, Jazz Ballad, Jazz Funk, Jazz Waltz and Latin Jazz. Each musical example has a single note improvised melody line with the right hand and chord accompaniment with the left hand. At the end of the book there is the chord progression for the popular jazz standard "Blue Moon" showing you how to use various examples from the 100 riffs to create an improvised solo over the chord progression. By demonstrating this technique you can pick most jazz standards and create your own improvisational ideas using the book. The audio files are recorded with the right hand piano part on the right channel and the left hand piano part on the left channel (bass and drums on both channels) with most of the examples recorded at normal and slowed down tempos. An absolute must for musicians learning and playing various jazz styles.
