Book T T Clark Companion to the Bible and Film

Download or read book T T Clark Companion to the Bible and Film written by Richard Walsh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first decades of the twenty-first century saw a resurgence of the biblical epic film, such as Noah and Exodus: Gods and Kings, which was in turn accompanied by a growth of biblical film criticism. This companion surveys that field of study by framing it in light of significant and recent biblical films as well as the voices of key biblical film critics. Non-Hollywood and seemingly "non-biblical†? films also come under investigation. The contributors concentrate on three points: "context†?, focusing on the 'Bible in' specific film genres and cultural situations; "theory†?, applying theory from both religion and film studies, with an eye to their possible intersections; and "recent and significant texts†?, reflecting on which texts and themes have been most important in 'biblical film' and which are currently at the fore. Exploring cinema across the globe, and accompanied by extended introductory essays for each of the three sections, this companion is an important resource for scholars in both film and biblical reception.

Book excerpt: A young warrior woman somersaults off a horse with a dagger and javelin in hand, landing at Salome’s side and spinning her once again into the revolutionary cause and unresolved relationships and past conflicts. As the Romans continue their onslaught, the Zealots and Parthians fight back. Salome is caught up in the ensuing chaos where she’s reunited with her childhood friend and fellow freedom fighter, Nathaniel. Salome’s nephew, Yeshua, emerges as the new Messiah. He performs miracles, drawing the ire of Roman leaders. Salome’s sons and other followers flock around him, upsetting family dynamics and general peace. Salome is also swept up into the Messianic fervor, but still struggles to find her place amidst all the change. She and Nathaniel are woven together tighter by the marriage of their now-adult children and then by dual tragedies. Their lifelong friendship takes a new turn while the quest for goodness continues to consume Salome like a dragon. The final book of Salome’s trilogy, The Good Aunt continues her spirited journey in biblical times alongside the rise of Yeshua (Jesus). Salome comes to terms with the struggles that have curtailed her happiness for years, healing her relationships and learning to compromise and forgive. As sister to the Virgin Mary, Salome’s personal growth and love story come full circle, showing that redemption is always possible and that love, integrity, and perseverance will reign.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Original and illuminating."—The New York Times Book Review In her most ambitious work since In the Time of Butterflies, Julia Alvarez tells the story of a woman whose poetry inspired one Caribbean revolution and of her daughter whose dedication to teaching strengthened another. Camila Henriquez Urena is about to retire from her longtime job teaching Spanish at Vassar College. Only now as she sorts through family papers does she begin to know the woman behind the legend of her mother, the revered Salome Urena, who died when Camila was three. In stark contrast to Salome, who became the Dominican Republic's national poet at the age of seventeen, Camila has spent most of her life trying not to offend anybody. Her mother dedicated her life to educating young women to give them voice in their turbulent new nation; Camila has spent her life quietly and anonymously teaching the Spanish pluperfect to upper-class American girls with no notion of revolution, no knowledge of Salome Urena. Now, in 1960, Camila must choose a final destination for herself. Where will she spend the rest of her days? News of the revolution in Cuba mirrors her own internal upheaval. In the process of deciding her future, Camila uncovers the truth of her mother's tragic personal life and, finally, finds a place for her own passion and commitment. Julia Alvarez has won a large and devoted audience by brilliantly illuminating the history of modern Caribbean America through the personal stories of its people. As a Latina, as a poet and novelist, and as a university professor, Julia Alvarez brings her own experience to this exquisite story. Julia Alvarez’s new novel, Afterlife, is available now.

  • Pages : 29 pages

Download or read book Salome written by Oscar Wilde and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the prophet Jokanaan is brought to the attention of the princess Salomé, he rebukes her interest, which causes her to make a brutal declaration.Oscar Wilde’s one-act tragedy explores the repercussions of her horrifying decision. Originally composed in French in 1892, Salomé is a controversial tale full of cruelty and retribution. Wilde expands on the Biblical story of John the Baptist, whom was captured and beheaded by Herod Antipas. It explores the interaction between the characters showing Salomé’s spiteful nature and Herod’s growing concern. It’s a bold adaptation of a somber tale that leaves a mark on all who read it. Salomé’s one-act story structure immediately dives into the strange dynamic amongst Herod and his family. Once Salomé’s bloodlust is apparent Herod’s forced to reconcile both of their futures. It’s a haunting drama that’s amplified by its Biblical setting and notable characters. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Salomé is both modern and readable.

Book Aubrey Beardsley Dandy of the Grotesque

Download or read book Aubrey Beardsley Dandy of the Grotesque written by Chris Snodgrass and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes a wide range of Beardsley's most characteristic work. It establishes his assumptions about the underlying nature of his world, and clarifies why so many observers have considered Beardsley's art indispensable to understanding fin-de-si cle Victorian culture. Beardsley's pictures present a dialogue between seemingly polarized impulses: a desire to scandalize and destabilize the old order, and, equally strong, a need to affirm traditional authority. Beardsley depicted various grotesque shapes, caricatures, and mutated figures, including foetus/old man, dwarf, Clown, Harlequin, Pierrot, and dandy (the icon of the Decadent "Religion of Art"). Incarnating the fearful contradictions of decadence, these images served as objective correlatives of some "monstrous" metaphysical contortion. His grotesques suggest the impossibility of resolving these contradictions, even as his elegant designs try formalistically to control and recuperate the disfiguration. As a canonical style, Beardsley's "dandy" sensibility and grotesque caricatures become his means of realigning canonical meaning. Thus, he effects what might be termed a "caricature" of traditional signification. An aesthete devoted to the "Religion of Art", Beardsley, nonetheless, creates a world inescapably "de-formed". He is a Dandy of the Grotesque.
