Book excerpt: Every May Day, bundles of branches tied with colourful ribbons appear on Hastings’ shopfronts and streetlamps. Drumming swells as crowds of green-clad bogies, festival-goers in shorts and t-shirts, and Morris dancers fill Hastings’ winding streets. And then comes the main event: Jack in the Green’s wizened face appears on a towering cone of leaves topped with a crown at the centre of the festivities. The Jack in the Green festival marks the passage of spring to summer. But from where does this bizarre tradition originate? The roots are too tangled to know for sure, and the first recording of the festival was in 1770. However, some believe celebrations of the ‘Green Man’ hail from the pagan Anglo-Saxons who established England’s historic county of Sussex, and the myth transformed with each subsequent generation. But Jack in the Green is only one of Sussex’s many mysteries. Fearsome beasts, terrifying giants, cackling witches, and plucky fairies are just a few of the creatures populating the folklore of this strange and savage land. Ending with the modern celebration of the Jack in the Green festival, this collection of stories traces the roots of Sussex’s centuries of tall tales, mythology, and folklore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a thoroughly revised and updated edition of KEITH SPENCE's essential guide to two of the most beautiful - and often still unspoiled - counties in England, which on its first publication quickly established itself as the best available guide to the area. Mr Spence shows how much as yet survives and how rich, varied and fascinating this part of England still is. He writes sensitively and knowledgeably about buildings and architecture, and has a keen sense of the detail that gives identity to a place. There is much to be learned from this book, which maintains the high standard of the Companion Guide series. OBSERVER

Book Growing Up in Sussex

Download or read book Growing Up in Sussex written by Gerry Wells and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling memoir starts with a boy's journey through the early years of the 1930s: days of the rag and bone man, street lamplighters, Hercule Poirot, and in the background, Hitler. Then life gets real: at school where cane and cricket bat rule and where the mustard sandwich fills a hungry corner, and even more real with army call-up and training. Then, in 1944/45, comes the crunch of combat in Operation Overlord - a boy's growing-up time. And after all that, with his ears still ringing a bit, comes the blessed call of demob and a taste of new delights: days of farming and finding a woman daft enough to marry him before settling on a farm to start his life as a man. In this nostalgic book evoking recollections of childhood and wartime in Sussex, the memories are the author's, however the sights and events are those that will be remembered by many others, and readers will warm to the narrator, who has found the perfect balance of humour and sensitivity.

Book Things in Heaven and Earth

Download or read book Things in Heaven and Earth written by Merritt Abrash and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-04-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Clouds That Follow," is the memoir of a young boy growing up into adulthood in Maine. As the title suggests, this young boy has his share of problems: an abusive, cheating, alcoholic father, a mother who enabled the abuser, and actually engaged in bloody conflict with that man. The little boy suffered loss of self-esteem and confidence brought on by his tyrannical father until he couldn't take it anymore.Unable to function in school, being called lazy by abusive teachers brought this little 12 year old boy to the end of his proverbial rope and ultimately led him to perform despicible acts of self-mutilation in order to get get a day or two of peace. If only things got better from there, but that was not the case. A pervert took advantage of my abuse and abused me. I made it through high school , met a girl and married. Things were looking better until I nearly bled to death from colitis at the age of 26 and had to have"That Operation." The rest of my memoir, which concludes when I am 49 years old is equally incredible. The book is full of wry humor and much nostalgia. An easy read, yes, and a very, very powerful story.

Book Brothers and Wives

Download or read book Brothers and Wives written by Christopher Andersen and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring unreported details and stunning revelations, the long-awaited follow-up to the “fabulous, addictive” (Chicago Sun-Times) New York Times bestseller Diana’s Boys explores the last twenty years in the lives of Princes William and Harry and the evolution of their relationship as adults, with one brother the designated heir, and the other doomed to life as the spare—perfect for fans of Netflix’s The Crown. Diana’s Boys revealed the powerful bond between the teenaged princes, and how it strengthened even more in the wake of their mother’s tragic death. Now, twenty years later, Queen Elizabeth II is in her mid-nineties, Prince Charles is in his seventies, and all eyes are turned increasingly toward William and Harry again. Christopher Andersen picks up where he left off, covering everything that has happened to the brothers as they have grown up, gotten married to two remarkable women, and had children—all while facing continual waves of controversy and questions about the ways their relationship has shifted. Andersen examines how the Queen’s behind-the-scenes maneuvering to mold her grandsons in the Windsor image after Diana’s death, and her expectations of William as the future king, played out. He questions whether the brothers’ famously close relationship can survive Harry’s departure from the Royal Family—the first time this has happened since their great-great-uncle King Edward abdicated the throne to marry a divorcée. He delves into the impact sisters-in-law Kate and Meghan have had on each other as well as on their princes, and how marriage and fatherhood have changed the brothers and, in some ways, also driven a wedge between them. Andersen also looks with an honest eye at how the princes and their wives have been continuously buffeted by scandal—including headline-making allegations of bullying, racism, betrayal, and emotional abuse that has pushed more than one royal to the brink of self-destruction. Based on in-depth research and with his “fascinating and insightful” (The Christian Science Monitor) writing, Andersen leaves no stone unturned in this intimate and riveting look into the private lives of the world’s most famous princes.

Book excerpt: Coming of age in Prague in the 1930s, Lena Kulkova is inspired by the left-wing activists who resist the rise of fascism. She meets Otto, a refugee from Hitler’s Germany, and follows him to Paris to work for the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. As the war in Spain ends and a far greater war engulfs the continent, Lena gets stuck in Paris with no news from her Jewish family, including her beloved baby sister, left behind in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. Otto, meanwhile, has fled to a village in England, and urges Lena to join him, but she can’t obtain a visa. When Lena and Otto are finally reunited, the safe haven Lena has hoped for doesn’t last long. Their relationship becomes strained, and Lena is torn between her loyalty to Otto and her growing attraction to Milton, the son of the eccentric Lady of the Manor. As the war continues, she yearns to be reunited with her sister, while Milton is preoccupied with the political turmoil that leads to the landslide defeat of Churchill in the 1945 election. Based on a true story, When It’s Over is a moving, resonant, and timely read about the lives of war refugees, dramatic political changes, and the importance of family, love, and hope.
