Download or read book So Far from Heaven written by Leonard Folgarait and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-06-25 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1964 and 1971, the Mexican mural painter David Alfaro Siqueiros produced The March of Humanity on Earth and Toward the Cosmos in Mexico City, his last major project and the largest mural in the world. This illustrated book mounts a careful study of the painting, which it sees as marking the end of the Mexican mural movement. The main purpose of the book is to place the mural into the social-historical context of the period of its production. Due to this approach, the mural is seen not only as a work of art, but also as a symbol and carrier of Mexican political ideology, especially as it concerns the government's attempts to continue presenting the Mexican Revolution of 1910 as the source and basis of contemporary and future social, political, and economic policy. Professor Folgarait's book provides a fascinating case-study highlighting the conflict of modernistic and naturalistic trends in art, and makes an important contribution to the study of Mexican art of the twentieth century and to the general topic of the relationship of art to politics.

Download or read book David Alfaro Siqueiros written by Valerie Greathouse and published by . This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period in 1932 when David Alfaro Siqueiros was in Los Angeles, he painted three, possibly four murals: Street Meeting at the Chouinard Art Institute; América Tropical at El Pueblo de Los Angeles; and Portrait of Mexico Today at a private residence in Pacific Palisades. A possible fourth mural was painted at the John Reed Club in Hollywood, but was largely undocumented and likely uncompleted at the time of his departure. While in Los Angeles, Siqueiros discovered a number of new materials and technologies for painting large-scale murals. Always an innovator, this period of time was particularly rich in his career, and the work he did in Los Angeles laid the groundwork for his later murals in Mexico and South America. As an integral component of the GCI's project to conserve, América Tropical, a bibliography was compiled over the course of the project. This selected bibliography focuses on the murals painted by Siqueiros in Los Angeles in 1932 with additional references on materials and techniques used by Siqueiros, as relevant for context. It spans the time period from 1932, when Siqueiros came to Los Angeles, to 2012, when the conservation, protection and interpretation of the mural, América Tropical, was completed by the GCI and the City of Los Angeles.

Book Chicano Manual on How to Handle Gringos

Download or read book Chicano Manual on How to Handle Gringos written by Jos? Angel Guti?rrez and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2003-04-30 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under this somewhat threatening title, the renowned civil rights leader Jos? Angel Guti?rrez provides a guidebook to minority empowerment through the use of analysis, practical experience and anecdote. His primary goal is the conversion of Latino demographic power into educational, economic and political power. In an incisive introduction, Guti?rrez analyzes the types of power and evaluates Chicano and Latino access to power at various levels in U.S. society. In very plain, down-to-earth language and examples, Guti?rrez takes pains to make his broad knowledge and experience available to everyone, but especially to those who want to be activists for themselves and their communities. For him the empowerment of a minority or working-class person can transfer into greater empowerment of the whole community. This manual penned by the founder of the only successful Hispanic political party, La Raza Unida, brings together an impressive breadth of models to either follow or avoid. Quite often, Guti?rrezÍs voice is not only the seasoned voice of reason, but also that of humor, wry wit and satire. If nothing else, The Chicano Manual on How to Handle Gringos is a wonderful survey of the Chicano and Latino community on the move in all spheres of life in the United States on the very eve of its demographic and cultural ascendancy.

Book Cats of Copenhagen

Download or read book Cats of Copenhagen written by James Joyce and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first-ever U.S. edition of this delightful gem based on a letter Joyce wrote to his grandson, revealing the modernist master’s playful side—filled with one-of-a-kind illustrations—the perfect gift for Joyce fans and cat lovers alike. The Cats of Copenhagen was first written for James Joyce’s most beloved audience, his only grandson, Stephen James Joyce, and sent in a letter dated September 5, 1936. Cats were clearly a common currency between Joyce and his grandson. In early August 1936, Joyce sent Stephen “a little cat filled with sweets”—a kind of Trojan cat meant to outwit grown-ups. A few weeks later, Joyce penned a letter from Copenhagen that begins “Alas! I cannot send you a Copenhagen cat because there are no cats in Copenhagen.” The letter reveals the modernist master at his most playful, yet Joyce’s Copenhagen has a keen, anti-authoritarian quality that transcends the mere whimsy of a children’s story. Only recently rediscovered, this marks the inaugural U.S. publication of The Cats of Copenhagen, a treasure for readers of all ages. A rare addition to Joyce’s known body of work, it is a joy to see this exquisite story in print at last.

Book The Chicano Latino Literary Prize

Download or read book The Chicano Latino Literary Prize written by Stephanie Fetta and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ñDavid is mine!î Mrs. Renteria shouts out to her neighbors gathered about the dead but handsome young man found in the dry riverbed next to their homes in a Los Angeles barrio. ñDavid?î Tiburcio asked. ñSince when is his name David? He looks to me more like a ƒî Tiburcio glanced at the manÍs face, ñƒ a Luis.î Mrs. RenteriaÍs neighbors call out a litany of names that better suit the mysterious corpse: Roberto, Antonio, Henry, Enrique, Miguel, Roy, Rafael. The very first winner of the Chicano / Latino Literary Prize in 1974, Ron AriasÍ ñThe Wetbackî uses dark humor to reflect on the appearance of a dead brown man in their midst. This landmark collection of prize-winning fiction, poetry, and drama paints a historical and aesthetic panorama of Chicana/o and Latina/o letters over a twenty-five-year period beginning in 1974 and ending in 1999. Most, but not all, of the winning entries are featured in this anthology, which also includes second- and third-place winners, as well as honorable mentions. Now entering its thirty-first year, the award has recognized a wide variety of writers, from established ones such as Juan Felipe Herrera, Michael Nava, and Helena Maria Viramontes, to those that are lesser known. Many of the pieces in this anthology are considered to be foundational texts of Chicana/o and Latina/o literature, and those that are not as widely recognized deserve more serious study and attention. Presented in chronological order, the selected writings are primarily in English, although some are written in Spanish, and others in Spanglish. Some, like Francisco X. AlarconÍs poem ñRaices / Roots,î appear in both languages: ñMis raices / las cargo / siempre / conmigo / enrolladas / me sirven / de almohada.î ñI carry / my roots / with me / all the time / rolled up / I use them / as my pillow.î In addition to the diverse array of authors, styles, and genres, the works included in this collection cover a wide range of themes, from more political issues of ethnic, gender, and class.
