Book Empowerment of Women for Promoting Health and Quality of Life

Download or read book Empowerment of Women for Promoting Health and Quality of Life written by Snehendu B. Kar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-18 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empowerment of Women for Promoting Health and Quality of Life critically reviews the key theoretical and empirical foundations and policy options for Global Public Health (GPH). The author presents the lessons learned from a meta-analysis of 80 self-organized, successful women's empowerment case studies across the world that have enhanced the health and well-being of their families and communities. The information gleaned offers rare opportunities for understanding what works, how women empower themselves, and how others--professionals included--can help. Additionally, Dr. Kar designs an "EMPOWER" model for empowerment of women for GPH and human development. Using an ecological perspective, the model defines the domains, dimensions, and processes of empowerment, and is applied to a community-based women's empowerment-for-health-promotion initiative. The implications for empowerment and GPH policy, practice, and research are also discussed.

Download or read book Middle Class Dharma written by Jennifer D. Ortegren and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""You have to come to my wedding," Kavita told me, turning to face me where I sat next to her on the couch. "You can come with the other people from the street. You will get everything you need for your *research* there." "I will come, I will come!" I replied enthusiastically. I had only met Kavita and her two younger sisters, Arthi and Deepti (see Figure 2.1), mere minutes before this invitation was extended. I had initially come to Pulan that day in October 2012 to meet another woman, Heena, whose family rents a room on the third story of Kavita's family's home. Heena and I had been sitting in the furniture refurbishing store she operates with her husband on the main street of Pulan when Deepti, Kavita's youngest sister, passed by. Heena introduced us and told me to go with Deepti to meet her family. When we reached the family's three-story house-the largest in the gali-Deepti led me past the empty rooms on the ground floor, which I would eventually begin renting, to the second-story living room. There, we found Kavita and Arthi organizing clothing and jewelry they had purchased earlier in the day for the upcoming wedding festivities. Kavita made room for me to sit next to her on the couch and began asking me about myself. I immediately warmed to her because of her open, friendly smile and sharp, staccato Hindi, which I delighted in being able to understand. I explained that I had come to India to study how women's lives are different in rural and urban areas, and Kavita assured me that she and her family could help. She noted that her parents had come to Udaipur from Ram Nagar, a large village thirty-five kilometers north of the city, and that the family would be returning for her and her older brother Krishna's weddings the following month. Their weddings would be held five days apart to help reduce the difficulties of family members traveling from outside Udaipur. Prompted by the description of my research, Kavita commented on differences that she recognized between the village and the city. The biggest difference, she suggested, was the experience of caste, namely that in the village, people from different jatis live separately, whereas in the city, people are "mixed." As I would come to learn when visiting Ram Nagar for various functions, there is a fair amount of caste and religious diversity in the village. Although spatial and ritual segregation was rather strictly maintained during religious observances, it is likely more flexible in everyday life. The segregation during ritual functions-the occasions for which Kavita also traveled to the village-likely informed her sense of a lack of "mixing" in the village as. The majority of residents in the area of Ram Nagar where the family maintains a home were also from the Mali (lit: gardener) jati, although Mali was not a majority jati in Pulan"--

This book was released on with total page 1278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta is the main work on the life and teachings of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the incarnation of Krishna who appeared in India five hundred years ago. Lord Chaitanya introduced the chanting of the holy names of God as the prescribed method of God-realization for our time. He began what is today called the Hare Krishna movement, since the movement's founder, Srila Prabhupada, comes in the Chaitanya line of spiritual masters. Lord Chaitanya transformed the face of India in four respects: philosophically, by encountering, defeating and converting the greatest philosophers and thinkers of His day; religiously, by organizing the largest, most widespread theistic movement in India's history; socially, by His strong challenges to the religious inequities of the caste system; politically, by His organization of a massive civil disobedience movement in Bengal, more than four centuries before Gandhi. This English translation with commentary, by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, reveals his consummate Bengali and Sanskrit scholarship, his intimate familiarity with the precepts of Sri Chaitanya, and his pure devotion to God.

Book Eternal Game of Life

Download or read book Eternal Game of Life written by Ekalavya and published by Notion Press. This book was released on with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever been aghast at God’s scheme of things? Have you ever felt helpless in the midst of all pervasive inequity and not being able to do anything? Ever felt like throttling the throats of those sophists who coo in your ears, “Oh the world is sooooo beautiful! Live in the present, as it’s a gift” kind of inane homilies, and get into a mood to smash a few things, blurt out profanities, or worse, get into depression? The book tries to capture such moods and reflects on them to try and fathom His apparent ways. It starts with positive euphoria, dwells into texts to find solace, reflects deeply as to what can be done to find peace, and slowly gets to a realization that things will continue to just “be”. Surrendering to His will in perfect understanding and without that “oh but the grapes are sour” kind of mindset, but yet being actively aware, would indeed be a sane if not sole option. “Que Sera Sera, whatever will be, will be”. Read on, for the journey towards “realization” to unfold; allegorically comparing our life cycle to a Snakes and Ladders board game of ups and downs, euphoria and frustration, agonies and ecstasies, all of which abound till you reach home.

Book Reading the Fifth Veda

Download or read book Reading the Fifth Veda written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often spoken of as the 'Fifth Veda', i.e., as a text in continuity with the four Vedas and outweighing them all in size and import, the Mahābhārata presents a complex mythological and narrative landscape, incorporating fundamental ethical, social, philosophic, and pedagogic issues. In a series of position pieces and essays written over a span of 30 years, Alf Hiltebeitel, Columbian Professor of Religion, History, and Human Sciences at The George Washington University, articulates a compelling new approach to the epic: as a literary work of fundamental theological and philosophical significance rich in metaphor and meaning. In this three-part volume, the editors gather some of Hiltebeitel’s seminal writings on the epic along with new pieces written especially for the volume. This two volume edition collects nearly three decades of Alf Hiltebeitel’s researches into the Indian epic and religious tradition. The two volumes document Hiltebeitel’s longstanding fascination with the Sanskrit epics: volume 1 presents a series of appreciative readings of the Mahābhārata (and to a lesser extent, the Rāmāyaṇa), while volume 2 focuses on what Hiltebeitel has called “the underground Mahābhārata,” i.e., the Mahābhārata as it is still alive in folk and vernacular traditions. Recently re-edited and with a new set of articles completing a trajectory Hiltebeitel established over 30 years ago, this work constitutes a definitive statement from this major scholar. Comprehensive indices, cross-referencing, and an exhaustive bibliography make it an essential reference work. For more information on the second volume please click here.

  • Author : Rabindranath Tagore
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2005-03-31
  • ISBN : 0141960078
  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book Selected Poems written by Rabindranath Tagore and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2005-03-31 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) are among the most haunting and tender in Indian and in world literature, expressing a profound and passionate human yearning. His ceaselessly inventive works deal with such subjects as the interplay between God and the world, the eternal and transient, and with the paradox of an endlessly changing universe that is in tune with unchanging harmonies. Poems such as 'Earth' and 'In the Eyes of a Peacock' present a picture of natural processes unaffected by human concerns, while others, as in 'Recovery - 14', convey the poet's bewilderment about his place in the world. And exuberant works such as 'New Rain' and 'Grandfather's Holiday' describe Tagore's sheer joy at the glories of nature or simply in watching a grandchild play.
