Book excerpt: Childhood summer vacations are always special, but the summer before a life-changing event like your first year of high school can be particularly memorable. The great unknown of venturing out of your neighborhood comfort zone and meeting new friends can be stressful but also holds out the promise of meeting lifelong friends. The Summer of 1964 tells the story of Marty McAlynn, a fourteen-year-old boy, as he experiences his last summer before entering secondary school. As the summer develops, it is shaping up as the greatest summer of his young life for several reasons. His favorite team, the almost always hapless Philadelphia Phillies, are defying all expectations and are in the thick of a red-hot pennant race. Marty is also indulging his creative passion and love of the classic Universal horror movies by making his very own home movie, a monster film about Frankenstein and the Wolfman. Marty lives in the heart of South Philadelphia with his large family headed by his dad, Martin Senior, a Philadelphia fireman; his mom, Veronica, a stay-at-home mother of ten children; and his maternal grandfather, Adolph, a World War I veteran and refugee from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Marty discovers the joys and heartache of a summer that will never be forgotten. It is also a bittersweet tale of how baseball can bind three generations with agonizing thrills, heartbreaking defeats and lifetime memories.

Book Luyia of Kenya

    Book Details:
  • Author : Shadrack Amakoye Bulimo
  • Publisher : Trafford Publishing
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 1466983329
  • Pages : 701 pages

Download or read book Luyia of Kenya written by Shadrack Amakoye Bulimo and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Luyia, like other Africans subsumed by imperialist conquest, are groping in the dark to find new meaning to their lives. By emigrating from tribal territory to towns, Luyia tribesmen lost strong communal links that bonded traditional society in which security of the individual was assured. The real danger, however, is the infiltration of neo-capitalism in the remotest villages, sweeping away what little is left of the culture of a bygone era. The need to preserve our cultural resources for future generations is critical. Colonial institutions radically altered traditional governance, economic and magico-religious structures. Clan elders, hitherto the pseudo-legal centers of political authority, were either conscripted into colonial administration as chiefs or simply shunted aside. Supplication to cult of the ancestor was replaced by Christianity where clergy rather than sacrificial priests became principal representatives of the deity. And where men spent the day hunting to secure a family meal, they now had to seek waged employment and pay taxes. Although these forces of Western acculturation introduced positive benefits to traditional technological processes, they were largely responsible for uprooting a people from an environment they had lived for generations and adapted to suit their needs to one driven largely by opportunism and uncertainty.

Book My Best Teachers Were Saints

Download or read book My Best Teachers Were Saints written by Susan H. Swetnam and published by Loyola Press. This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discipline problems, self-doubt, tense meetings, classroom stress . . . Couldn’t every teacher use some saintly help? Every teacher can think of at least one mentor who has served as an inspiration over the years. However, many teachers—even those with a Catholic faith—might not have considered that saints can serve as mentors. Author and teacher Susan H. Swetnam believes that saints aren’t only good teachers—they’re the best teachers. In My Best Teachers Were Saints, Swetnam focuses on fifty-two saints—many of them teachers—who faced challenges similar to those that nearly all educators face today, from indifferent students and recalcitrant colleagues to their own limitations and feelings of isolation. With the examples of saints such as Augustine, Ignatius of Loyola, and Scholastica, Swetnam eagerly shares how their words and deeds helped immensely in her own career as a teacher and how they can aid and inspire other educators as well. Anyone involved in education—whether teaching religion or mathematics, kindergartners or graduate students—will discover within these pages a treasure trove of saintly help that is sure to prove that the best teachers are in fact saints!

Book Hard to Be a Saint in the City

Download or read book Hard to Be a Saint in the City written by Robert Inchausti and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of Beat spirituality--seen through excerpts from the writings of the seminal writers of Beat Generation themselves. It’s been said that Jack Kerouac made it cool to be a thinking person seeking a spiritual experience. And there is no doubt that the writers he knew and inspired—iconic figures like Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Gary Snyder, and Michael McClure—were thinkers seeking exactly that. In this re-claiming of their vision, Robert Inchausti explores the Beat canon to reveal that the movement was at heart a spiritual one. It goes deeper than the Buddhism with which many of the key figures became identified. It’s about their shared perception of an existence in which the Divine reveals itself in the ordinary. Theirs is a spirituality where real life triumphs over airy ideals and personal authenticity becomes both the content and the vehicle for a kind of refurbished American Transcendentalism.
