Book excerpt: The environmental area of concern in the St. Mary's River on the Ontario-Michigan boundary has historically experienced reductions in fish habitat due to the reduction of flow and size of the rapids area. The purpose of the study described is to define the hydraulic characteristics and constraints pertaining to increasing the watered area in the rapids with a minimum possible flow requirement. A two-dimensional computer model was applied to analyze flow in the rapids area and for the investigation of different locations and combinations of gate openings in the rapids area. A field investigation including substrate sampling and water level measurement was also carried out. The effects of berm improvement, channel dredging, and downstream remedial work were evaluated using the model and simulation results are presented. Finally, the effects of creation of a wetland east of Whitefish Island are examined and a future field test program is proposed.

Book excerpt: This current status assessment of the St Marys River Area of Concern (AOC) was conducted between May 1997 & October 1998 and included consultation between the International Joint Commission and citizens, representatives of government agencies, local industries, municipalities, First Nations, and the Binational Public Advisory Council. A public meeting was also held concerning issues of scientific relevance to the development & implementation of a Remedial Action Plan (RAP). An assessment was carried out in the following areas: funding, institutional structure, roles of the parties involved in the RAP, jurisdictions & other sectors, and public consultation. This evaluation examines activities within the St Marys River AOC that foster restoration of beneficial uses and is not confined to activities conducted as part of the RAP. It begins with a history of the AOC, sources of contamination, human health considerations, and the current environmental status of the AOC. Examples of confirmed successes & obstacles in the AOC restoration process are then reviewed in order to document & promote successful activities and help overcome the obstacles.
