Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of St. Mary the Virgin: Oxford, in Its Relation to Some Famous Events of English History When in 1901 the writer of this volume under took for the second time the office of Select Preacher before the University of Oxford, it occurred to him that he would not be wrong in avoiding the more usual theological topics, and choosing as the subject of the few sermons which might be expected to fall to the holder of his office the connection of the famous church of which he was vicar with some of the more memorable events of English, or at least of Oxford history. The present book contains seven sermons, together with an Introduction. Of the sermons, four were preached before the University; the first and sixth before the Mayor and Corporation, who have been accustomed of late years to attend the University Church on some Sunday before the beginning of the academical year; a graceful act on their part. Book History of the Devotion

Download or read book History of the Devotion written by Xavier Donald MacLeod and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Devotion: To the Blessed Virgin Mary in North America Catholic Literature in this country is not yet rich in works of a historical character; and though not a few have appeared evincing great research, and worthy of a high place, there was still wanting a popular element which genius alone could supply by lending its charm to the often dry details of the historian. The devotion to the Blessed Virgin in this country, from its settlement to the present day, was a theme which had been briefly touched upon by one or two writers. Still, it was a field which the late lamented author of the following pages entered with all the zeal and devotion of his ardent and impassioned character, and as a necessary consequence he gave his work the stamp of his peculiar genius. Few more gifted writers have appeared among us than Xavier Donald Macleod; and in undertaking his work, material was contributed by his numerous friends. The writer of this, one who had enjoyed that friendship from boyhood, rejoicing to see him about to take up a subject so worthy of his talents, furnished him an abundant material which he had collected, and feels now, perhaps, too great pleasure in his privilege in having contributed to so noble a work as that here presented to the Catholic public. Book The Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Download or read book The Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary written by C. J. O'connell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary: As Set Forth in Her Litany Every child fondly loves its mother. Not in words only, but by deeds even more, it shows her the most beautiful devotion. It finds daily, ingeniously enough, new methods to rejoice her soul, and have her to feel its deep veneration for her. Children never tire of repeating the praises of their mother. They cherish the tenderest affection for her, whose loveliness is ever present before their eyes. In the home, they gather around her; when absent they think of her and long to return to her gentle smile and loving embrace. In their appreciation of her, she is the best, the fairest, the greatest, yes, the noblest, the most lovable, the most beautiful of all women. There is none comparable to her. She surpasses all others. They laud her on every possible occasion, and resent the slightest reflection upon the beauty of her heart or soul. Their life is wholly wrapped up in hers. Our love and devotion for our sweet loving Mother Mary caused us to write this book in her honor. As one of her children, we wish to lay at the feet of the most admirable of mothers our meed of homage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Worship of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Church of Rome

Download or read book The Worship of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Church of Rome written by J. Endell Tyler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Worship of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Church of Rome: Contrary to Holy Scripture, and to the Faith and Practice of the Church of Christ Through the First Five Centuries Recent events seem to confirm us greatly in this view; pointing to the worship of Mary in the Church of Rome as the chief practical barrier between mem bers of the two Churches. To many a wavering spirit has the Church of Rome held out her own communion as the sure, and the only sure, place of refuge, where spiritual doubts cease from troubling, and misgivings have no place; where implicit faith in an infallible guide bids defiance to every assailant, and suffers no disturbing thought to arise, converting the present life of perplexity into a state of tranquillity and peace. Various as are the counteracting causes to prevent the fulfilment of such expectations, none, we are told, are so generally operative, or so insurmountable to a mind that has habitually made God the sole object of prayer, and the Son of God the sole Mediator, as the worship of the blessed Virgin. Book A Virgin Conceived

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mary F. Foskett
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2002-06-25
  • ISBN : 0253108969
  • Pages : 249 pages

Download or read book A Virgin Conceived written by Mary F. Foskett and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-25 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The virginity of Mary has been an influential tenet of Christian belief, a catalyst for Marian devotion, and a foundation for the construction of female Christian piety and practice. In contrast to previous biblical interpreters who have drawn on either linguistic or historical evidence to ponder whether Mary the parthenos is indeed a "virgin," in this study Mary F. Foskett takes a different course. Rather than investigating the meaning and implications of the Virgin as a reified symbol, A Virgin Conceived examines the portrayal of Mary as a virgin in two important early Christian narratives: the canonical Luke-Acts and the second-century Protevangelium of James. Foskett explores the multiple meanings and images that parthenos and virginity display in two sources and describes how they exploit this range of possible meanings in their representations of Mary. Her study departs from earlier biblical interpretation by emphasizing neither the ambiguity of the term parthenos nor the history of tradition concerning Mary. Instead, it displays the multiple meanings of "virginity" and their implications for understanding representations of the Virgin Mary.
