Book Life of Saint Angela Merici of Brescia

Download or read book Life of Saint Angela Merici of Brescia written by Abbe Parenty and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-05-19 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE reading of the lives of the Saints has been at all times recommended by the Church. God, in fact, raised them up to bring back to him, by the spectacle of their example and miracles, the nations among which they lived. In permitting public honors to be paid to them, the Holy Ghost, who directs the Church, has wished their virtues to be thus perpetuated in the memory of men. Hence the numervus panegyrics of our Christian orators: hence, too, the immense labors undertaken by the learned of every age to elucidate and recount their wonderful works. Some among them have shone with a brighter light, like the stars of heaven, whom the Supreme Ruler of all things had set differently in the vast expanse of the firmament. Angela Merici, whose life we write, was evidently raised up by God to serve as a light to her age, to revive faith, then almost extinct, and to found an order of virgins, till then unknown in the Church. This institute, whose origin dates from the revival of learning in Europe, has spread with astonishing success, and diffused Catholic doctrines at a time when a struggle was going on between the religious parties that divided whole kingdoms. The order of Ursulines, founded by Saint Angela, has fulfilled this mission with ever increasing happiness, especially in France, till the period of the unhappy Revolution in that country. Then the many monasteries that had been created in its provinces were suppressed; but scarcely was religion restored to the soil of France, when new communities arose in almost every diocese. In 1801, Pope Pius VII. canonized the Blessed Angela Merici: this was an encouragement for the Ursulines who had survived the revolution. Aided by the bishops, and even by the civil authorities, they formed new establishments for the instruction of youth. A few years sufficed to restore more than a hundred communities, now very flourishing. A complete life of Saint Angela was needed among them, and we have undertaken this. The authors that have aided us in its composition, all bear the approbation of the ecclesiastical authority. The chief are Father Quarre, of the Oratory; a life inserted in the History of the Order of Saint Ursula, printed at Paris in 1516, in two volumes; a short life issued at Rome in 1118, and a nearly complete life published at Fougeres in 1837. We have besides consulted Alban Butler, the Journal of the illustrious nuns of the Order of Saint Ursula, and the brief of her canonization.

St. Angela's Constitutions. "we may fitly pause in spirit before the shrine of St. Angela Merici in the Church of St. Afra, and, while kneeling with the pilgrims from every land to look upon her venerable remains, and to adore that God whose glory shines forth so wonderfully in His saints, cast our eyes upon the Constitutions which she has left behind, as upon the worthiest monument which could be placed beside her tomb. These Constitutions divinely given to her, as she herself hints repeatedly in her last instructions to her dear ones, were the mould in which were cast and formed these primitive Ursulines of Brescia, Cremona, and Milan, who so won the admiration and reverence of all Upper Italy during the last half of the sixteenth century, that France, the Low Countries, and all Germany were fain to possess them. What though the outward form changed with the new countries in which they were called to labor, and with the imperious necessities of the altered times and the increased labors they had to assume? The apostolic spirit breathed by St. Angela into the Company of St. Ursula as trained and constituted by her, the mighty educational purpose which lay at the foundation of her institute, and the heroic virtues to which she had formed her daughters and which result necessarily from that formation--all passed into the congregated Ursulines of Milan, and from them into the glorious monasteries of Aix and Lyons, of Bordeaux and Paris. The spirit of St. Angela 60 lived in the hundreds of Ursuline establishments which flourished in France and the Netherlands, in Italy and Germany, before the calamitous events of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire, that the dry-rot of tepidity or worldliness never touched these...

Download or read book Stages on the Road written by Sigrid Undset and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2012-06-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sigrid Undset is among the great modern writers of the twentieth century and was an adult convert to Catholicism. This forgotten treasure from the Nobel Prize–winning author of Kristin Lavransdatter is a fascinating collection of saints’ lives, a prophetic critique of modernity, and a surprisingly contemporary take on being Catholic—in particular a Catholic woman—in a sometimes-hostile secular world. Stages on the Road is a series of essays about the relationship between the Church and the modern world. In the spirit of G. K. Chesterton and C. S. Lewis, Undset points to inconsistencies, hypocrisies, and blind spots of the modern secular mindset by introducing readers to the stories of somewhat-forgotten Catholic figures like St. Angela Merici and the English martyrs Margaret Clitherow and Robert Southwell—people who stood fast to their faith in the face of both intellectual and political hostility. Undset tackles such topics as religious freedom, Christian/Muslim relations, and the vocation of women.

This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From THE AUTHOR'S PREFACE. The book here offered to the public was undertaken at a time when the author was busy on other most important and more attractive matter. Several heads of religious orders of women had written to him expressing the wish that he would undertake to prepare lives of their respective founders. Two of them were especially urgent in their request. Thereupon it was thought that a series of biographies, entitled "Modern Apostles of Female Education," might be of no little interest and advantage to our numerous teaching Orders and their pupils, as well as to the general public. At any rate, out of this conception grew 'St. Angela Merici And The Ursulines.' Who knows but, all imperfect as it is, it may inspire other writers, both more zealous and more competent, to continue the series, and show how so many noble rivals and auxiliaries in this glorious apostleship of female education sprung up around the daughters of St. Angela? In the following narrative the author has taken for his principal guide the Jesuit Salvatori, who, writing in Italy, and having ready at his hand both the local traditions and the most approved histories of St. Angela and her Order, has left us a Life incomparably better than any of those which preceded it. Even Salvatori's book, however, does not explain at all, or explains but unsatisfactorily, the long delays which occurred between the vision in which Angela was commanded to found in Brescia a society of religious women, and the foundation itself, a few years only before her death. This long interval. in the existing popular biographies of the Saint, is filled up -- if indeed it can be said to be filled at all-with but few interesting incidents. How far the present Life has succeeded, both in explaining these delays and varying the monotony of these intervening years, is left to the reader to judge. The first half of the manuscript was in the hands of the publisher and printer, when a kind Quebec friend sent the author the first volume of Abbe Postel's Histoire de Sainte Angele Merici et de l'Ordre des Ursulines. Though this able and interesting book came too late to help the author amid the confused and conflicting dates and statements of St. Angela's historians, it was no small satisfaction to see that Abbe Postel had taken pains, and not without success, to explain the obstacles met with and overcome at length in founding the Company of St . Ursula. If, in some respects, the arrangement followed in the present Life of St. Angela differs from the Italian or French biographies, it need only be said that the author has consulted principally the best interests of American readers. To them, he firmly trusts, the sketch here submitted of the life and labors of the Holy Maid of Desenzano will prove attractive, edifying, and instructive. New York, April 2, 1880.
