Book excerpt: It is early 1800s England and seven-year-old Joseph Godfrey is shouldering much more responsibility than most children his age. As if being left in charge of the house and his younger sister is not enough, Joseph must also endure physical abuse from his drunken father. One night after a beating renders him unconscious, Joseph decides to run away. After leaving his sister with a neighbor, Joseph heads toward the docks, slips onto a whaling ship, and hides in a blubber barrel. Now a stowaway with no other plan than to escape his dreadful past, Joseph is horrified when he is soon discovered. After he is taken to the ships kindly captain who agrees to let him stay aboard, Joseph grows, matures, and learns what it is like to be part of a family. Some twenty-five years later when a tragic event pushes Joseph and his friend, George, to leave the ship while in New York Harbor, Joseph begins yet another adventure that takes him across the American frontier to the Rocky Mountains. Steps to the Sun retraces the steps of an English boy who escapes his fathers wrath and begins a remarkable coming-of-age journey on a ship and beyond as he discovers love, blessings, and most importantly, himself. A must read for anyone interested in the expansion and settling of the American frontier Carol Astle, descendant

Book An Introduction to Transport Phenomena in Materials Engineering

Download or read book An Introduction to Transport Phenomena in Materials Engineering written by David R. Gaskell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-01-24 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book elucidates the important role of conduction, convection, and radiation heat transfer, mass transport in solids and fluids, and internal and external fluid flow in the behavior of materials processes. These phenomena are critical in materials engineering because of the connection of transport to the evolution and distribution of microstructural properties during processing. From making choices in the derivation of fundamental conservation equations, to using scaling (order-of-magnitude) analysis showing relationships among different phenomena, to giving examples of how to represent real systems by simple models, the book takes the reader through the fundamentals of transport phenomena applied to materials processing. Fully updated, this third edition of a classic textbook offers a significant shift from the previous editions in the approach to this subject, representing an evolution incorporating the original ideas and extending them to a more comprehensive approach to the topic. FEATURES Introduces order-of-magnitude (scaling) analysis and uses it to quickly obtain approximate solutions for complicated problems throughout the book Focuses on building models to solve practical problems Adds new sections on non-Newtonian flows, turbulence, and measurement of heat transfer coefficients Offers expanded sections on thermal resistance networks, transient heat transfer, two-phase diffusion mass transfer, and flow in porous media Features more homework problems, mostly on the analysis of practical problems, and new examples from a much broader range of materials classes and processes, including metals, ceramics, polymers, and electronic materials Includes homework problems for the review of the mathematics required for a course based on this book and connects the theory represented by mathematics with real-world problems This book is aimed at advanced engineering undergraduates and students early in their graduate studies, as well as practicing engineers interested in understanding the behavior of heat and mass transfer and fluid flow during materials processing. While it is designed primarily for materials engineering education, it is a good reference for practicing materials engineers looking for insight into phenomena controlling their processes. A solutions manual, lecture slides, and figure slides are available for qualifying adopting professors.

Book An Introduction to Transport Phenomena In Materials Engineering 2nd edition

Download or read book An Introduction to Transport Phenomena In Materials Engineering 2nd edition written by David Gaskell and published by Momentum Press. This book was released on 2012-08-24 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic text on fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transport has been brought up to date in this second edition. The author has added a chapter on “Boiling and Condensation” that expands and rounds out the book’s comprehensive coverage on transport phenomena. These new topics are particularly important to current research in renewable energy resources involving technologies such as windmills and solar panels. The book provides you and other materials science and engineering students and professionals with a clear yet thorough introduction to these important concepts. It balances the explanation of the fundamentals governing fluid flow and the transport of heat and mass with common applications of these fundamentals to specific systems existing in materials engineering. You will benefit from: • The use of familiar examples such as air and water to introduce the influences of properties and geometry on fluid flow. • An organization with sections dealing separately with fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transport. This sequential structure allows the development of heat transport concepts to employ analogies of heat flow with fluid flow and the development of mass transport concepts to employ analogies with heat transport. • Ample high-quality graphs and figures throughout. • Key points presented in chapter summaries. • End of chapter exercises and solutions to selected problems. • An all new and improved comprehensive index.

Book Volume 1 Modern Electrochemistry

Download or read book Volume 1 Modern Electrochemistry written by John O'M. Bockris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-06-30 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book had its nucleus in some lectures given by one of us (J. O’M. B. ) in a course on electrochemistry to students of energy conversion at the University of Pennsyl- nia. It was there that he met a number of people trained in chemistry, physics, biology, metallurgy, and materials science, all of whom wanted to know something about electrochemistry. The concept of writing a book about electrochemistry which could be understood by people with very varied backgrounds was thereby engendered. The lectures were recorded and written up by Dr. Klaus Muller as a 293-page manuscript. At a later stage, A. K. N. R. joined the effort; it was decided to make a fresh start and to write a much more comprehensive text. Of methods for direct energy conversion, the electrochemical one is the most advanced and seems the most likely to become of considerable practical importance. Thus, conversion to electrochemically powered transportation systems appears to be an important step by means of which the difficulties of air pollution and the effects of an increasing concentration in the atmosphere of carbon dioxide may be met. Cor- sion is recognized as having an electrochemical basis. The synthesis of nylon now contains an important electrochemical stage. Some central biological mechanisms have been shown to take place by means of electrochemical reactions. A number of American organizations have recently recommended greatly increased activity in training and research in electrochemistry at universities in the United States.

Book excerpt: “Following in the footsteps of Stephen Hawking's ‘A brief history of time’ and Simon Singh's ‘Fermat’s Last Theorem’ this exceptionally accessible book will you leave marveling at the wonders of the world and, if you didn't listen to your science teachers, wishing you had. Graham writes with the mind of a physicist and the soul of a poet.” Nicki Hayes, CCO, The Communications Practice, author of First Aid for Feelings. “Only a few writers have managed to turn the highly technical jargon of science into language accessible for interested lay readers. Isaac Asimov showed us how it could be done, and Carl Zimmer and Brian Greene are continuing today. In Molecular Storms, his first book, Liam Graham has shown that he has the essential quality required to join this group, a love of first learning then explaining how the universe works." David Deamer, Professor of Biomolecular Engineering, University of California, Santa Cruz, author of Assembling Life. Why is the universe the way it is? Wherever we look, we find ordered structures: from stars to planets to living cells. This book shows that the same driving force is behind structure everywhere: the incessant random motion of the components of matter. Physicists call it thermal noise. Let’s call it the molecular storm. This storm drives the fusion reactions that make stars shine. It drives whirlpools and currents in atmospheres and oceans. It spins and distorts molecules until they are in the right orientation to react and form new substances. In living cells, it drives proteins to fold and molecules to self-assemble. It is behind every detail of the astonishing molecular machines that control cellular processes. Using cutting-edge research, “Molecular Storms” takes us on a dazzling journey from the early universe to the interior of the smallest living things. There, in a nanoscale world of biological devices, it explains the physics behind the chemical system which we call Life. Whether you're someone with a general interest in science or a student looking to add context to your studies, this book is for you. "Molecular Storms" is an accessible and captivating read that will deepen your appreciation of the power of science to explain the world.

Book Violence Culture and Identity

Download or read book Violence Culture and Identity written by Helen Chambers and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains selected papers given at the conference 'Violence, Culture and Identity' held at St Andrews University in 2003. It contributes to the debate on the role of culture in propagating, mediating and controlling violence in society, concentrating on the relationship between culture and identity-formation in Germany and Austria from the Middle Ages to the present. Bringing together the work of twenty-two scholars with expertise in different literary and historical periods, the volume probes the complexities of representations of violence enacted and suffered, of affirmative and non-affirmative violence in text and visual form, revealing the often blurred line between victim and victimizer. Violence in its discursive and material forms is investigated, using the theoretical tools of sociology, post-colonial and gender studies, history and psychology as well as of literary criticism. The collection of essays focuses particularly on the relationship between war and identity, on 1970s terrorism and identity, on violence and the construction of gender, and on contemporary writing in German.

He’s barely even had time to plan their going away slash Christmas party, and he fears he’s going to let everyone down at all of it. So when a beautiful redheaded woman and her friend barge onto his new sailboat one night, begging to use the head, his first instinct is to tell them no. No more demands, no more entanglements, no more trouble. His yes, however, ends up leading to a much nicer evening than expected and the phone number of Taylor Beckwith, the redhead. The phone number leads to coffee, the coffee leads to a dinner date, and soon Alex finds himself juggling his growing attraction to Taylor, the unexpected challenges of the holiday party, and the year-end needs of the salvage business. Will a ship-shape, put-together, feisty professional woman like Taylor even be interested in more from a sailor boy with way too many irons in the fire? He might need a Christmas miracle, and he might just need the courage to believe in himself.
