There were many people who helped him with his recovery: his family, church, counselor, and those he met who faced similar situations. Soon after his surgery, Jon met a man who was distraught over his four-year-old son, who suffered from intractable seizures. As Jon shared his experience he witnessed hope being instilled in the man and his family. He is now a mentor and a counselor, focusing on helping people live with epilepsy. His greatest joy comes from his two sons, who have been there when needed, and accomplished much in their lives and careers.

That made him the object of constant concern to his family and dictated almost every decision he made. With medication, Jon was deemed seizure-free for several years, though his speech was permanently affected. After a college sailing accident, he had his first grand mal seizure (loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions). He continued sailing despite the dangers and graduated from university with an engineering degree. He later found employment with the Navy, and then a position with the Army Corps of Engineers. As he grew older, his ability to deal with seizures weakened, leading to radical brain surgery. In 2010, after informally counseling a man whose child had epilepsy, he approached a turning point in his life. He became a licensed graduate professional counselor and now works as a mentor/advocate for the Epilepsy Foundation. This book is his story of trial and the triumph of hope over fear, and how overcoming even the greatest of challenges is possible through faith.

When adolescence ends, your seizures will stop." My seizures will stop when adolescence ends; that was seven or eight years; seven years seemed a lifetime, eight years seemed an eternity. So began the mounting frustration and exasperation. That statement has echoed in my mind during a 40-year prolonged adolescence. The brain is like a car's engine-it controls what we do and where we go and some of us have faulty electrical systems. In adolescence, testosterone shifted my brain into overdrive and flicked the seizure switch that controlled the firing of my spark plugs to the off position-it has remained there for nearly four decades.
