Book excerpt: Settled by the Dutch and English in the mid-17th century, the small hamlet of Oyster Bay has a rich history and retains much of its charm and character. Theodore Roosevelt purchased land at Oyster Bay in 1880 on which he built his home, Sagamore Hill. Oyster Bay became the focus of national attention from 1902 through 1908, when Roosevelt brought the executive branch of the government to Oyster Bay each summer. Many other wealthy New York City families built summer homes at Oyster Bay in the late 19th century, forming the nucleus of what became the gold coast setting for F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Louis Comfort Tiffany built his 110-room mansion at Oyster Bay, and "Typhoid Mary" Mallon was identified while working as a cook in the hamlet.

Download or read book Historic Furnishings Report Vol 2 written by David H. Wallace and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Furnishings Report, Vol. 2: Sagamore Hill, Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, Oyster Bay, New York; Furnishing Plan The hall is clearly a passageway, having lost its living room character when the north room was built in 1905. Its furnishings reflect the post-presidential years, dominated as it is by the Cape buffalo, eland and oryx heads, elephant tusk gong, and other trophies of the ex-president's African trip and the World War I vintage shot-and-shell andirons. A 1918 photograph and the 1919 inventory of Theodore Roosevelt's estate, supplemented by Mrs. Roosevelt's 1948 estate inventory and 1948 photographs provide good documentation.
