Book On the degradation of wood pellets during pneumatic conveying Experiments and DEM CFD simulations

Download or read book On the degradation of wood pellets during pneumatic conveying Experiments and DEM CFD simulations written by Julian Jägers and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In the present thesis, the dependence of wood pellet degradation and fines formation during pneumatic conveying on operating conditions like air and product mass flow or shape of pipe components is investigated. Both the size reduction of the cylindrical pellets during pneumatic transport caused by mechanical impacts and the prevailing pressure losses are analysed experimentally and numerically. Single particle impact tests are performed for investigating the breakage behaviour of wood pellets including the effect of particle length, impact velocity and collision angle. Based on the empirical correlations derived, a numerical degradation model is developed and implemented into the in-house DEM code of the Department of Energy Plant and Technology of the Ruhr-University Bochum. Experimental and numerical investigations are conducted using coupled DEM-CFD simulations to obtain detailed insights into flow conditions, particle motion and the mechanical loads on the pellets during pneumatic conveying. Numerical results show good qualitative agreement with the experimentally determined degradation rates and prevailing pressure losses. The degradation model developed allows detailed investigation into wood pellet degradation and fines formation during pneumatic conveying and enables the design of pipe configurations and operating conditions to prevent particle size reduction and excessive pressure losses.

Book Guidelines for Safe Handling of Powders and Bulk Solids

Download or read book Guidelines for Safe Handling of Powders and Bulk Solids written by Stanley S. Grossel and published by Wiley-AIChE. This book was released on 2005 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powders and bulk solids, handled widely in the chemical, pharmaceutical, agriculture, smelting, and other industries present unique fire, explosion, and toxicity hazards. Indeed, substances which are practically inert in consolidated form may become quite hazardous when converted to powders and granules. The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board is currently investigating dust explosions that occured in 2003 at WestPharma, CTA Acoustics, and Hayes-Lemmerz, and is likely to recommend that companies that handle powders or whose operations produce dust pay more attention to understanding the hazards that may exist at their facility. This new CCPS guidelines book will discuss the types of hazards that can occur in a wide range of process equipment and with a wide range of substances, and will present measures to address these hazards.

Book Pneumatic Conveying Design Guide

Download or read book Pneumatic Conveying Design Guide written by David Mills and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-10-21 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pneumatic Conveying Design Guide will be of use to both designers and users of pneumatic conveying systems. Each aspect of the subject is discussed from basic principles to support those new to, or learning about, this versatile technique. The Guide includes detailed data and information on the conveying characteristics of a number of materials embracing a wide range of properties. The data can be used to design pneumatic conveying systems for the particular materials, using logic diagrams for design procedures, and scaling parameters for the conveying line configuration. Where pneumatic conveyors already exist, the improvement of their performance is considered, based on strategies for optimizing and up-rating, and the extending of systems or adapting them for a change of material is also considered. All aspects of the pneumatic conveying system are considered, such as the type of material used, conveying distance, system constraints including feeding and discharging, health and safety requirements, and the need for continuous or batch conveying. * Highly practical, enabling suppliers and users to choose, design, and build suitable systems with a high degree of confidence * Health and safety requirements taken into consideration in the safe conveying methods described in this book * Practical application combined with background theory makes this an excellent resource for those learning about the topic

Book Safety Issues Associated with Plutonium Involvement in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle

Download or read book Safety Issues Associated with Plutonium Involvement in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle written by Theodore A. Parish and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "VOLGA" conferences, hosted in odd-numbered years by the Department of Theoretical and Experimental Reactor Physics of the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI), are some of the most prestigious technical meetings held in Russia. Traditionally, these conferences present the opportunity for reactor physicists from around the world to gather at MEPhI's holiday camp on the banks of the Volga river (near Tver) to exchange ideas and explore innovative concepts related to nuclear power development. In 1997, NATO became involved in the "VOLGA" meetings for the first time by co-sponsoring "VOLGA97" as an advanced research workshop. This workshop broke with tradition a bit in that the venue was moved from MEPhI's holiday camp to a location nearer Moscow. The workshop program was effectively organized in order to cover a broad range of topics relating to the theme of the meeting. Generally, the papers concerned safety related questions associated with utilizing both weapons-grade and reactor-grade plutonium in the nuclear fuel cycle, including facility requirements, licensing issues, proliferation risks, and a variety of advanced concepts for alternative fuel cycles. The program contained a total of ninety-nine papers presented in five days of sessions.
