Book excerpt: Safe sex behaviors towards HIV/AIDS among Myanmar migrants of reproductive aged population in Samutsakhon Province, Thailand were assessed as a cross-sectional study in 2008. Their socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge, perception and cue to action on HIV/AIDS as well as their safe sex behaviors were found out.Safe sex behaviors in this study are no sex with unknown partner, intention of faithfulness to spouse or partner, intention to use condom and consistent condom use.Out of 260 respondents, 69.6% are in moderate level behavior,15.4% in good and 15.0% in poor level. Consistent condom use is 55.8%.Data analysis shows that there were relationship between age, gender, educational level, marital status, occupation, knowledge level, perception level, media, influencing person, experience of seeing AIDS patient factors and safe sex behavior.Health personnel are the most influencing person. Continuation of health education and workplace condom promotion program should be encouraged more. Book excerpt: This cross-sectional study examined HIV/AIDS risk behaviors and modifiable factors for prevention of HIV/AIDS among Myanmar Migrant labors in Khao San Road tourism area in Bangkok. 210 participants (Male 108, Female 102) age between 18 to 35 years were selected and a self-administered questionnaire was utilized to collect data of this study with snowball sampling technique. For data analysis, descriptive statistics was used for all variables and chi-square test, odds ratio and 95% CI were used to describe association between studied factors. Majority of the respondents were at the age of between 25-29years (mean age was 26.4 years). Most of them were Myanmar and Mon. Half of respondents was single. Nearly 70% had not completed compulsory education and worked as shop helpers in Khao San road. They could speak and understand Thai language. Those respondents got HIV information from mass media. The findings in this study suggested that the majority of participants had a moderate level of HIV/AIDS knowledge, mean score 9.73 (minimum 0 to maximum 14), SD ± 2.54. There was no statistically significant difference among male and female respondents about HIV/ AIDS knowledge. But male were more risky in sexual behaviors, alcohol and drug related risks than female. Male 13.6% who had with sex in this study reported they didn't use condoms when having sex with commercial sex workers (CSW). There were nearly half of respondents who had sex with CSW after drinking alcohol/taking drug answered they had no history of condom use. No injected drug users were found in this study. There were significant associations between migrant status (p-value 0.027), occupation status (p-value 0.005) and visiting to sex workers, between age of respondents (p-value 0.004), gender (p-value

Book excerpt: This book presents a cross-sectional study (undertaken at the College of Public Health Sciences, Chulalungkorn University) of HIV/AIDS Risk Behaviors among Myanmar Migrants in Bangkok s Khao San Road tourism area. Quantitative analysis using chi-square test, odds ratio and 95% confidence interval were used to describe associations between variables from the sample gathered using the snow ball technique. A major high risk profile for HIV/AIDS among Myanmar migrants emerged within the study, the undereducated 25-29 year old blue collar worker with moderate knowledge of HIV/AIDS. Associations between socio-demographic factors, HIV/AIDS knowledge and the risk behaviors: visiting sex workers, alcohol consumption and drug use were analyzed and presented in this particular study. Based on the risk behaviors studied, the author recommends behavior change intervention in the form of increased access to health education among migrants and that further reaffirmation of this study s findings be conducted through a broader longitudinal study on sexual attitudes and behavior of migrants.

Book excerpt: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on March 2010 with the objective of assessing the living and working environment and factor associated with the safe sexual behavior and health status related to unsafe sexual behavior of Myanmar migrant workers in Muang District, Ranong Province, Thailand. Multi-stage purposive sampling method was used for the study and 406 households were recruited in the survey. For data analysis, chi-square test was used. Respondents aged between 19 and 50 years from each household were selected and interviewed by using self-administered questionnaires. Female and male respondents are selected half by half (female 203 and male 203). Out of 406 respondents, 41.4% is single, 50.7% are married and 5.7% and 2.2% are divorced and widowed. Their major jobs are Factory worker and fisherman. Among the 406 respondents, half (51.0%) live in dawn town and over 50% (205) respondents live with roommates. For working environment, over half (224) respondents work 10-14 hours per day. There is significant relationship between gender (P-value 0.001), type of job (p-value 0.001), job needs to travel (0.001) duration of stay in Thailand (0.001) and safe sex behavior. In 203 male respondents, 109(52.7%) had sex with sex workers and only 36.2% use condom when have sex with sex worker. There is significant relationship between gender (p-value 0.006), marital status (p-value 0.041), duration of stay in Thailand (p-value 0.001), working years(p-value 0.001), job location(pvalue-0.000), job needs to travel(p-value 0.001) and sexually transmitted infection. Health education and condom promotion programs are necessary for the migrant workers especially in fishermen group because this group has poor sex behavior and high prevalence of STI. Also health education program for sexually transmitted infections and provide more STI clinics are needed. 16.9% of total respondents had STI. In further study, other indicators to elicit more about the safe sex behavior of the females should be used as females think some issues are especially concern with male only. For more information about safe sex behavior, further study should not only focus on descriptive study but also point out for action research for prevention and control of it.
