Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents results of a study conducted to determine the arming time that should be recommended for each combination of aircraft type, release condition, bomb type, and post-release maneuver, as well as a discussion of the methods used to arrive at the recommended arming times. The aircraft types considered were A-4, A-6, A-7, and F-4. The release conditions considered were level attitude with no post-release maneuver, and dives followed by application of a 4G recovery force within two seconds after release of the last bomb. The tabulations presented do not replace the tactical manual recommendations, but rather present supplementary information for those interested. (Author).

Book US Marine Corps F 4 Phantom II Units of the Vietnam War

Download or read book US Marine Corps F 4 Phantom II Units of the Vietnam War written by Peter E. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five US Marine Corps squadrons flew versions of the Phantom II and 11 of them used the aircraft in South-East Asia from May 1965 through to early 1973. Rather than the air-to-air missiles that were the main component in the original F-4 armament, these aircraft carried an ever-expanding range of weaponry. Some toted 24,500-lb bombs and others strafed with up to three 20 mm gun pods, while most flew daily sorties delivering napalm, Snakeye bombs and big Zuni rockets. Many US Marines holding small outpost positions in Laos and South Vietnam against heavy Viet Cong attack owed their lives to the Phantom II pilots who repeatedly drove off the enemy. The book will examine these missions in the context of US Marine Corps close-support doctrine, using the direct experience of a selection of the aircrew who flew and organised those missions.

Book An Investigation of Inadvertent Arming of MK 82 and M 117 General Purpose and MK 82 Snakeye Bombs

Download or read book An Investigation of Inadvertent Arming of MK 82 and M 117 General Purpose and MK 82 Snakeye Bombs written by Gordon S. Thorsvold and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into the inadvertent arming of MK-82 and M-117 general purpose bombs and MK-82 Snakeye bombs was initiated after a review of flight test film from A-7D munition certification tests indicated that the bomb nose fuze was often arming when it was not intended to arm or before it was intended to arm. Data collected from approximately 45 flight test missions indicated that the primary variables which contributed to the high rate of inadvertent arming were ejector foot design, arming solenoid operation, and the wire routing procedures. The tests revealed that, by routing the arming wire on the lower side of the ejector foot and by use of the smaller design ejector foot, the rate of inadvertent arming can be substantially decreased but not eliminated. The tests also revealed that the operation of the arming solenoids in the safe mode was extremely unreliable. (Author).

Book Effects of Release Interval for Stick Bombing on Probability of Kill

Download or read book Effects of Release Interval for Stick Bombing on Probability of Kill written by Thomas H. Brown and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the effect, on the probability of kill, of decreasing the minimum release interval for sticks of Mk 82, 83, and 84 low-drag bombs. The effectiveness of a reduced minimum release interval is discussed as related to aiming error, quantity and type of bombs in the stick, and pairs versus singles releases. THE METHODOLOGY EMPLOYED IN THE PROBABILITY OF KILL CALCULATIONS IS EXPLAINED. (Author).

Book The Effect of Nose Shape on the Penetration of Small Scale Mk 82 Bombs in Soil

Download or read book The Effect of Nose Shape on the Penetration of Small Scale Mk 82 Bombs in Soil written by Robert J. Hassett and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effectiveness of a weapon system using the Mk 82 bomb requires that the bomb follow a specific trajectory during earth penetration to a terminal location of desired depth. This report presents the results of a preliminary investigation of the effect of nose shape, impact velocity, and impact angle on the trajectory of 1/25-scale models of the Mk 82 low-drag bomb in a silty sand soil. It was found that a spherical nose configuration achieves a relatively consistent and reproducible trajectory of the desired shape, and its response is less sensitive to impact angle and flight attitude than either the ogival or conical nose configurations. Scaling equations, such as those of Poncelet, Petry, Laumbach and Young, were used to predict the response of the prototype from the model tests. A theoretical expression for vertical penetration developed by John Harri was found to be applicable in the prediction of the response of the prototype. Additional tests were conducted to determine the effect of the medium on the trajectory of the projectile. From tests into clay, sand, and stratified layers of clay and sand, it was found that the effectiveness of modeling depends on the knowledge of the properties of the penetrated medium. (Author).

Book Flutter Analysis and Recommended Testing of the F 4 C D E Aircraft Carrying Mk 84 Or Mk 82 Bombs on the Outboard Wing Stations

Download or read book Flutter Analysis and Recommended Testing of the F 4 C D E Aircraft Carrying Mk 84 Or Mk 82 Bombs on the Outboard Wing Stations written by C. E. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flutter analysis of the F-4C/D/E wing were conducted for two types of low-drag general purpose bombs mounted on the outboard wing pylons to investigate possible carriage to 650 knots equivalent airspeed or M - 1.4, whichever is less. The bombs analyzed were the MK84 suspended directly from the pylon and the MK82 installed on the multiple ejector rack (MER). Analytical wing flutter stability trends were investigated for a number of parameters for carriage of the two bomb types. The investigation included evaluation of effects on wing flutter of aircraft internal fuel, tolerance variations in bomb inertia characteristics, flight altitude, and Mach number for symmetric and antisymmetric modes. Studies were made of MK82 bomb loading configurations resulting from the normal bomb release sequence from a fully loaded MER and from hung bombs, which occasionally occur on the MER shoulder positions. Basic data which were utilized in these analyses are included in this report. Results of the flutter analyses indicate that the MK84 bomb, the fully loaded MER with six MK82 bombs, and all but three of the MK82 bomb partially loaded configurations can be cleared for carriage to 650 knots equivalent airspeed or M = 1.4, whichever is less. For these three MK82 bomb loading configurations, flight testing is recommended to establish if adequate damping and/or velocity margins exist for the potentially critical modes throughout the flight envelope goal. Book Evaluation of a Ballute Retarder System for the Mk 82 Bomb

Download or read book Evaluation of a Ballute Retarder System for the Mk 82 Bomb written by and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains results of tests conducted to evaluate a ballute retardation system(combination balloon/parachute) for a Mk 82 bomb. The system tested provided for a low drag configuration of either of two types of high drag options. One high drag option (29-inch diameter ballute) was designed for mine application and the other (41-inch diameter ballute) for general purpose bomb application. Tests demonstrated the system was physically compatible with the F- 100 and F-4 aircraft. Flight tests demonstrated the system could be safely carried and released from the F-100 aircraft in level flight up to 550 KTAS. Ballistic data were obtained on all configurations used during the flight test. The average time for the 29-inch and 41-inch diameter ballute to fully inflate after release was 0.8 second and 0.7 second, respectively. The G-loads experienced during deployment of the 41-inch diameter ballute were sufficient to arm three of four FMU-54/B fuzes tested. The fourth fuze did not arm. Burial characteristics for the 29-inch diameter ballute varied from 2 to 8 feet horizontal travel from impact point, 5 to 12 feet deep, and at an attitude of 45 to 90 degrees nose-down. The ballute system successfully functioned 12 of 15 times tested. One of the 41-inch diameter ballute fabrics tore loose from the canister during deployment and two 29-inch diameter ballutes fluttered from release to impact.

Book Separation and Free Flight Tests of 1000 lb Gp Bomb Mk 83 Mod 2 with and Without Mechanical Nose Fuze Released from A3d Aircraft with Aero 7a Bomb Rack

Download or read book Separation and Free Flight Tests of 1000 lb Gp Bomb Mk 83 Mod 2 with and Without Mechanical Nose Fuze Released from A3d Aircraft with Aero 7a Bomb Rack written by L. A. JEHN and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The observed range, time of fall, and deflection are compared with the ballistic data given in available bombing tables for the subject bombAND FOR THE OBSERVED RELEASE AND ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS. 25% of the bombs with nose plug or with AN/M103A mechanical nose fuze and F740 tail fuze will fly with excessive yaw. Unstable flight makes this bomb with nose plug and fuzes unsuitable for service use with A3D aircraft equipped with Aero 7A ejector rack using current service cartridges. It is recommended that ejection force be applied at the center of gravity or cartridges which impart a reduced ejection force be used when ejecting the MK 83 bomb. (Author).
