Book Exploring strategic priorities for regional agricultural research and development investments in southern Africa

Download or read book Exploring strategic priorities for regional agricultural research and development investments in southern Africa written by Johnson, Michael E. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth quantitative analysis is undertaken in this paper to assist the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat, member countries, and development partners in setting future regional investment priorities for agricultural research and development in the SADC region. A primary goal of this work was to identify a range of agricultural research priorities for achieving sector productivity and overall economic growth in southern Africa, at both the country and regional levels. This is accomplished by adopting an integrated modeling framework that combines a disaggregated spatial analytical model with an economywide multimarket model developed specifically for the region.

Book Land and Water Management in Southern Africa

Download or read book Land and Water Management in Southern Africa written by Calvin Nhira and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and its Member States are making renewed efforts to revive agriculture in the region. Given that much of it is water-stressed, appropriate and sustainable land and water management practices are vital to achieving this objective. Recognising this, SADC's Land and Water Management Applied Research and Training Programme has convened two scientific symposiums. Held in Lilongwe, Malawi, in February 2006, the inaugural symposium brought together practitioners from 10 participating SADC countries to deliberate on land and water management for sustainable agriculture, and discuss how the most recent research and development advances in land and water management might be made more relevant to policymakers as well as the region's small-scale farmers. The edited contributions to this first symposium appear in this volume. The second symposium was held in Gaborone, Botswana, in February 2007, and brought together regional experts to discuss opportunities for improving water use and water use efficiency in agriculture in semi-arid and arid areas. The edited contributions to the second symposium appear in a companion volume entitled Land and Water Management in Southern Africa: Towards Better Water Use in Agriculture in Semi-Arid and Arid Areas (AISA 2008). It is hoped that these two volumes will help to disseminate regional expertise on land and water management to a wider audience, thus helping policy-makers and others to strengthen the agricultural sector in the region, and, in so doing, improve its food security and the wellbeing of its people.

Book Assessing Regional Integration in Africa

Download or read book Assessing Regional Integration in Africa written by United Nations. Economic Commission for Africa and published by United Nations, Economic Commission for Africa. This book was released on 2004 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication examines progress towards regional integration in Africa; defined as one of the anchoring ideals of African unity and the basis for the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) development framework. The report analyses the current state of the integration process, highlighting where efforts have succeeded or failed. Findings include that progress has been mixed across sectors, regional economic communities and member states; with some notable progress in trade, communications, transport and macroeconomic policy. Overall however, substantial gaps remain between goals and achievements of most regional economic communities, particularly in terms of internal African trade, macroeconomic policy convergence, production and physical connectivity. A summary report is also available (ISBN 9211250927)

Book Regional Integration for Food Security in Southern Africa

Download or read book Regional Integration for Food Security in Southern Africa written by Siphamandla Zondi and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The food crisis in Southern Africa is compounded by socio-economic, health and environmental problems. There is a diminishing income-generating labour supply and a low food production rate in areas which may be beset by drought, famine, HIV/AIDS or conflict. That agriculture is a viable sector for economic growth is posited on the fact that this sector provides a livelihood for some 70% of the region's population. Nevertheless the continent has failed to produce enough food for consumption. The acceleration of the process of globalisation has exacerbated the difficult and imbalanced agricultural environment, in which poor countries must operate, which, so this volume maintains, can only be addressed through integrated approaches at a regional level. Furthermore, the failure of so many international food relief programmes indicates that an approach harnessed by the regional bodies such as Nepad and SADC may be the most effective strategy to ensure the prospect of food security.
