Book Blood Sacrifice and the Nation

Download or read book Blood Sacrifice and the Nation written by Carolyn Marvin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-03-11 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling book argues that American patriotism is a civil religion of blood sacrifice, which periodically kills its children to keep the group together. The flag is the sacred object of this religion; its sacrificial imperative is a secret which the group keeps from itself to survive. Expanding Durkheim's theory of the totem taboo as the organizing principle of enduring groups, Carolyn Marvin uncovers the system of sacrifice and regeneration which constitutes American nationalism, shows why historical instances of these rituals succeed or fail in unifying the group, and explains how mass media are essential to the process. American culture is depicted as ritually structured by a fertile center and sacrificial borders of death. Violence plays a key part in its identity. In essence, nationalism is neither quaint historical residue nor atavistic extremism, but a living tradition which defines American life.

Download or read book For the Body written by Timothy C. Tennent and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look at what it means to be created in the image of God and how our bodies serve as icons that illuminate God's purposes instead of ours. The human body is an amazing gift, yet today, many people downplay its importance and fail to understand what Christianity teaches about our bodies and their God-given purposes. Many people misunderstand how the body was designed, its role in relating to others; and we lack awareness of the dangers of objectifying the body, divorcing it from its intended purpose. Timothy Tennent covers topics like marriage, family, singleness, and friendship, and he looks at how the human body has been objectified in art and media today. For the Body offers a biblical framework for discipling people today in a Christian theology of the body. Tennent—theologian and president of Asbury Theological Seminary—explores the contours of a robust Christian vision of the body, human sexuality, and the variety of different ways we are called into relationships with others. This book will reveal a theological vision that: Informs our self-understanding of our own bodies. Examines how we treat others. Reevaluates how we engage today's controversial and difficult discussions on human sexuality with grace, wisdom, and confidence. For the Body is a call to a deeper understanding of our bodies and an invitation to recapture the wonder of this amazing gift.

Book Rockaway NY

Download or read book Rockaway NY written by Roe Ethridge and published by Steidl. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mood of Roe Ethridge's Rockaway, NY suggests a nostalgic depiction of scenes from a coastal village. The snow-covered boardwalk, the cemetery, the shops in town, and a quiet street in late summer all appear at first glance to be genre scenes, revealing Ethridge's casual application of diverse pictorial modes and themes. The locales blend, imitate and disguise one another. Photographed in disparate geographical sites, from St. Barts to upstate New York, Ethridge plays the roles of both a thematic archivist and a wandering narrator, mapping an uncertain ground in which it is unclear if the representation is a blank image, nothing more than the sum of it's surface, or the fountainhead of some deeper significance. In 2003, Ethridge was given the cover of the October issue Artforum. Kate Bush wrote, "As technically adept as a commercial photographer yet as thoughtful as a Conceptualist about photography's role and meaning in the modern world, Ethridge believes the ubiquity of the photograph and the instantaneity of its transmission and reception in this age of increasing "ecstatic communication" is to be embraced rather than mourned. In his work there appears no cause and no ending, no discrimination between editorial and art, between document and construct, between technology and affect." Roe Ethridge was born in Miami in 1969 and currently lives and works in New York. His work has been exhibited widely in museums and galleries across the U.S. and Europe--most recently in solo shows at the Institutes of Contemporary Art in Boston, Palm Beach and Philadelphia, as well as at Gagosian Gallery, Los Angeles, Andrew Kreps, New York and Greengrassi Gallery, London.

Book Sacrifice and the Body

Download or read book Sacrifice and the Body written by John Dunnill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is sacrifice? For many people today the word has negative overtones, suggesting loss, or death, or violence. But in religions, ancient and modern, the word is linked primarily to joyous feasting which puts people in touch with the deepest realities. How has that change of meaning come about? What effect does it have on the way we think about Christianity? How does it affect the way Christian believers think about themselves and God? John Dunnill's study focuses on sacrifice as a physical event uniting worshippers to deity. Bringing together insights from social anthropology, biblical studies and Trinitarian theology, Dunnill links to debates in sociology and cultural studies, as well as the study of liturgy. Through a positive view of sacrifice, Dunnill contributes to contemporary Christian debates on atonement and salvation.

Download or read book I Die Daily written by Todd Tomasella and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-04-08 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I am carnal, sold under sin,” and yet the eclipsing power of divine grace through Jesus Christ is the glorious victory given to the saints of the Most High (Rom. 7:14; 1 Cor. 15:57). Grace overpowers sin in the lives of all who are truly and fully submitted to Christ (Rom. 6:14; James 4:7). Every human life that does not possess the eclipsing power and grace of Jesus Christ, is dominated by sin. This resurrection grace procures to us that victory as we experience what Paul termed as “Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus.” (2 Cor. 4:10) When we are “Always (perpetually) bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus,” His blessed divine life will always or perpetually be manifesting in our mortal bodies as death is working in us and life through us to others (2 Cor. 4:10-12). Any person who is walking in and led by the Holy Spirit of God is dying downward and being simultaneously lifted upward by the resurrecting power of the Most High. He is therefore fruitful and blessed, and his leaf shall not wither but be ever fruitful to God's glory (Ps. 1:3).
