Book Ruin the Sacred Truths

Download or read book Ruin the Sacred Truths written by Harold BLOOM and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bloom surveys with majestic view the literature of the West from the Old Testament to Samuel Beckett. He provocatively rereads the Yahwist (or J) writer, Jeremiah, Job, Jonah, the Iliad, the Aeneid, Dante's Divine Comedy, Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, the Henry IV plays, Paradise Lost, Blake's Milton, Wordsworth's Prelude, and works by Freud, Kafka, and Beckett. In so doing, he uncovers the truth that all our attempts to call any strong work more sacred than another are merely political and social formulations. This is criticism at its best. Table of Contents: 1. The Hebrew Bible 2. From Homer to Dante 3. Shakespeare 4. Milton 5. Enlightenment and Romanticism 6. Freud and Beyond Reviews of this book: Bloom's puissance is not entirely his own; for some of it, he is indebted to Nietzsche, Freud, Schopenhauer, Gershom Scholem, and other masters. But enough of it is his own to constitute a distinctive form of splendor. --Denis Donoghue, New York Review of Books Reviews of this book: The wit, the eclecticism and the gripping paradoxes...the force of [Bloom's] intellect carries the reader from pinnacle to pinnacle, showing a new spiritual landscape from each. --Roger Scruton, Washington Times Reviews of this book: In some ways the wildest of the wild men (and women), in some ways the most traditional of the traditionalists, Harold Bloom remains serene amid the turbulence--much of it caused by him. He stands dauntless, a party of one, as thrilling to behold up on the high wire as he is (at times) throttling to read on the page...From this strong critic dealing with these strong poets comes a potent mix of insight. --Mark Feeney, Boston Globe

This book was released on 2008-12-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a reprint of the 1854, fifth edition. Noah Worcester (1758-1837) was a fifer with the American Revolutionary forces at the famous battle of Bunker Hill, and subsequently a Congregationalist minister in New Hampshire. In 1810 Worcester published the first edition of Bible News, the product of decades of wrestling with the doctrine of the Trinity and its alleged basis in the Bible. An controversy ensued, and his denomination condemned him as an apostate. With little hope of ever preaching again in New Hampshire, Worcester was invited by some leading Unitarian clergymen to edit a new periodical, The Christian Disciple. Worcester moved to Brighton, Massachusetts, and edited that publication from 1813 to 1818. Worcester continued to periodically revise the Bible News.He is also well known as an early American advocate of pacifism, to which he devoted much energy in the last two decades of his life.

Book Sacred Cows

Download or read book Sacred Cows written by Danielle Teller and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A husband-and-wife doctor team offers fresh and startling perspective on one of our most cherished and misunderstood institutions. Drs. Astro and Danielle Teller know better than most that finding the right partner in life doesn’t always happen the first time around. Through their own divorces they learned how widely held cultural assumptions and misinformation that nobody thinks to question—what they refer to as “sacred cows”—create unnecessary heartache for people who are already suffering through a terrible time. Do you think, for example, that the divorce rate in the United States is rising? Or that children are harmed by divorce? Most people do, but it turns out that neither of these notions is supported by the data. Combining the rigor that has established them as leaders in their respective fields along with a dose of good-natured humor, the Tellers ask readers to take a fresh look at seven common sacred cows: the Holy Cow, the Expert Cow, the Selfish Cow, the Defective Cow, the Innocent Victim Cow, the One True Cow, and the Other Cow. This is not a book that is “for” marriage or “for” divorce, but “for” the freedom to decide how to live most honestly and happily either as part of a couple or a single person.

Book Nothing Sacred

    Book Details:
  • Author : Douglas Rushkoff
  • Publisher : Crown
  • Release : 2003-04-08
  • ISBN : 1400049563
  • Pages : 198 pages

Download or read book Nothing Sacred written by Douglas Rushkoff and published by Crown. This book was released on 2003-04-08 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed writer and thinker Douglas Rushkoff, author of Ecstasy Club and Coercion, has written perhaps the most important—and controversial—book on Judaism in a generation. As the religion stands on the brink of becoming irrelevant to the very people who look to it for answers, Nothing Sacred takes aim at its problems and offers startling and clearheaded solutions based on Judaism’s core values and teachings. Disaffected by their synagogues’ emphasis on self-preservation and obsession with intermarriage, most Jews looking for an intelligent inquiry into the nature of spirituality have turned elsewhere, or nowhere. Meanwhile, faced with the chaos of modern life, returnees run back to Judaism with a blind and desperate faith and are quickly absorbed by outreach organizations that—in return for money—offer compelling evidence that God exists, that the Jews are, indeed, the Lord’s “chosen people,” and that those who adhere to this righteous path will never have to ask themselves another difficult question again. Ironically, the texts and practices making up Judaism were designed to avoid just such a scenario. Jewish tradition stresses transparency, open-ended inquiry, assimilation of the foreign, and a commitment to conscious living. Judaism invites inquiry and change. It is an “open source” tradition—one born out of revolution, committed to evolution, and willing to undergo renaissance at a moment’s notice. But, unfortunately, some of the very institutions created to protect the religion and its people are now suffocating them. If the Jewish tradition is actually one of participation in the greater culture, a willingness to wrestle with sacred beliefs, and a refusal to submit blindly to icons that just don’t make sense to us, then the “lapsed” Jews may truly be our most promising members. Why won’t they engage with the synagogue, and how can they be made to feel more welcome? Nothing Sacred is a bold and brilliant book, attempting to do nothing less than tear down our often false preconceptions about Judaism and build in their place a religion made relevant for the future. From the Hardcover edition.

The Foundation of Buddhist Thought series is an excellent introduction to Tibetan Buddhism. These unique books, based on the curriculum of a popular course of the same name, were developed by Geshe Tashi Tsering, a Tibetan scholar renowned for his ability to render Buddhist teachings accessible and relevant to everyday life. Book From the Four Noble Truths to the Four Universal Vows

Download or read book From the Four Noble Truths to the Four Universal Vows written by Xingyun and published by Buddha's Light Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhism began in India before migrating to other parts of Asia. Buddhists in the southern countries, such as Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Myanmar, carry on a practice known as the Theravada. The form of Buddhism that moved north and east, into China, Korea, and Japan, among others, is called the Mahayana. In a breathtaking display, Venerable Master Using Yun harmonizes the traditions of these two major branches of Buddhism, demonstrating that seemingly disparate ideals are in fact pointing us toward the same objectives. This book will be appreciated by Buddhists of all traditions, as well as by non-Buddhists, as a masterful synthesis of some of Buddhism's main teachings.

Book Golf s Three Noble Truths

Download or read book Golf s Three Noble Truths written by James Ragonnet and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Buddha’s seven years of wandering in search of enlightenment ended in frustration. So did the author’s thirty years of traversing golf courses. Neither found what they were looking for until they stopped searching outside and started looking within. The result for James Ragonnet was the kind of “second birthday” Eastern thinkers describe when “you wake up to everything happening around you.” Through delightful anecdotes and practical lessons, Ragonnet reveals the power of awareness, balance, and unity to banish the dissatisfaction and stagnation so many golfers experience. He shows how “all golf Buddhas — Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Annika Sorenstam, Tiger Woods — play with their outer and inner eyes wide open,” describes his twelfth-green OOGE (“out-of-golf-experience”), and offers readers simple truths that prompt flashes of understanding. These insights invite birdies, drop handicaps, and transform experience both on and off the course.
