Book Sacred Places in China

Download or read book Sacred Places in China written by Carl F. Kupfer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sacred Places in China The chief reason for producing this little volume is to give to the thoughtful reader of China and the Chinese a clearer conception of the readiness of the people to accept, with full credence, such whimsical and mythological stories as are here related, of their susceptibility of spiritual influences, and of the decay of intellectual vigor among the Buddhist and Taoist priests, as the inevitable result of monasticism. The intellectual vigor of the Chinese is found among the Confucianists, who hold the controlling power in the government, while Buddhism and Taoism seem past any hope of resurrection to real life. They have had their age of faith. But no one need to doubt the spiritual susceptibility, nor despair of the intellectual progress of all classes. Christianity fosters mental growth and science stimulates thought and is eminently fitted to drive out all fear and superstition. Christian education is not failing in accomplishing this. The response is abundantly gratifying. However, the struggle with Buddhism and Taoism is not yet ended, it has scarcely begun. The reader finds himself here in the midst of the Asiatic world of nearly two thousand years ago, when Buddhist priests had entered actively upon their pilgrim life. To this day all foot-worn mountain paths lead to some monastery or sacred shrine. The information recorded in this little volume is the fruit of hard labor. The writer traveled to distant mountains in the Mid-China hot summer months, visiting monasteries, and living with monks in the hope of gaining some knowledge of their inner life and hope of the future. Most of this information was obtained verbally, some through Chinese reading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Philosophies and Religions of China Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Philosophies and Religions of China Classic Reprint written by John Fryer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophies and Religions of China A mlssing la - In the same way therefore that the many Chinese who want to succeed in Western affairs are beginning to make our philosophies and religions a prominent feature of their study, so those among ourselves who wish to be first on the field ready to reap the best advantages and realize the highest benefits which the opening up of China will place in their power, must spare no pains to become fully conversant with all that China holds most sacred on these two important topics. We must remember that however lightly we may regard them the Chinese see a vast fund of meaning in the utterances of their philosophers, whom they look up to with the deepest reverence, and that they feel a real power in their different forms of religion, which have borne so large a part in influencing the lives of themselves and their ancestors for untold generations. Not only can we not afford to ignore these studies, but we shall find in them one of the missing links in the chain which is to draw the East and West into closer connection, and expand their mutual advantages. The sooner therefore that this link can be supplied and adjusted in its proper place the better. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Face of China: Travels in East, North, Central and Western China; With Some Account of the New Schools, Universities, Missions, and the Old Religious Sacred Places of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism People may describe with success the soul of a people, provided it is sufficiently near the surface, but the foreigner who has known and loved China for a lifetime would be the first to repudiate the possibility of doing this in the case of China. I would rather take Browning's view Nor soul helps body more than body soul - and try to set down faithfully the things I have seen, that they may lead others to study China for themselves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of the Chinese A place as a world-religion must, without hesi tation, be assigned to it on account of the vast number of its adherents. It has extended the circle of its influence far beyond the boundaries of the empire proper, and has gained access, together with Chinese culture generally, into Korea, Japan, Manchuria, and Turkestan, as well as into Indo China, though, of course, in modified forms. Hence a proper understanding of the religions of East Asia in general requires in the first place an under standing of the religion of China. Book Language and Logic in Ancient China

Download or read book Language and Logic in Ancient China written by Chad Hansen and published by Advanced Reasoning Forum. This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guided by 20th century theories of language, Hansen's novel approach to interpretive theory launched the modern analytical study of Ancient Chinese philosophy. This 1983 publication challenged authority-based traditional "religious" accounts stemming from 18th and 19th century missionary dictionaries and reliance on interpretive authority. "Hansen shows that one tiny grammatical question... has profound implications for the understanding of Chinese philosophy. ...This is surely a decisive breakthrough ... a great success. His observations about Chinese thought in general are always stimulating and illuminating. A book which excites one to rethink things from the foundations." A. C. Graham "An ambitious and provocative book concerning the relationship between language and thought in ancient China. ... a novel and powerful theory about the nature of classical Chinese language ... a better understanding of many issues in classical Chinese philosophy." P. J. Ivanhoe "[The] importance of this book lies ... in its engaging style, novel ideas, and rigorous argumentation, which can serve as a model for future work in Chinese philosophy. Hansen takes Chinese philosophy seriously as philosophy. For anyone tired of the superficial summaries or scholastic commentaries that so often characterize this field, Hansen's book will be a memorable and welcome change." Michael Martin

Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist: a revelatory portrait of religion in China today, its history, the spiritual traditions of its Eastern and Western faiths, and the ways in which it is influencing China's future. Following a century of violent antireligious campaigns, China is now awash with new temples, churches, and mosques as well as cults, sects, and politicians trying to harness religion for their own ends. Driving this explosion of faith is uncertainty over what it means to be Chinese, and how to live an ethical life in a country that discarded traditional morality a century ago and is still searching for new guideposts. Ian Johnson lived for extended periods with underground church members, rural Daoists, and Buddhist pilgrims. He has distilled these experiences into a cycle of festivals, births, deaths, detentions, and struggle a great awakening of faith that is shaping the soul of the world s newest superpower. Book The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occupying much of imperial China’s Yangzi River heartland and costing more than twenty million lives, the Taiping Rebellion (1851-64) was no ordinary peasant revolt. What most distinguished this dramatic upheaval from earlier rebellions were the spiritual beliefs of the rebels. The core of the Taiping faith focused on the belief that Shangdi, the high God of classical China, had chosen the Taiping leader, Hong Xiuquan, to establish his Heavenly Kingdom on Earth. How were the Taiping rebels, professing this new creed, able to mount their rebellion and recruit multitudes of followers in their sweep through the empire? Thomas Reilly argues that the Taiping faith, although kindled by Protestant sources, developed into a dynamic new Chinese religion whose conception of its sovereign deity challenged the legitimacy of the Chinese empire. The Taiping rebels denounced the divine pretensions of the imperial title and the sacred character of the imperial office as blasphemous usurpations of Shangdi’s title and position. In place of the imperial institution, the rebels called for restoration of the classical system of kingship. Previous rebellions had declared their contemporary dynasties corrupt and therefore in need of revival; the Taiping, by contrast, branded the entire imperial order blasphemous and in need of replacement. In this study, Reilly emphasizes the Christian elements of the Taiping faith, showing how Protestant missionaries built on earlier Catholic efforts to translate Christianity into a Chinese idiom. Prior studies of the rebellion have failed to appreciate how Hong Xiuquan’s interpretation of Christianity connected the Taiping faith to an imperial Chinese cultural and religious context. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom shows how the Bible--in particular, a Chinese translation of the Old Testament--profoundly influenced Hong and his followers, leading them to understand the first three of the Ten Commandments as an indictment of the imperial order. The rebels thus sought to destroy imperial culture along with its institutions and Confucian underpinnings, all of which they regarded as blasphemous. Strongly iconoclastic, the Taiping followers smashed religious statues and imperially approved icons throughout the lands they conquered. By such actions the Taiping Rebellion transformed--at least for its followers but to some extent for all Chinese--how Chinese people thought about religion, the imperial title and office, and the entire traditional imperial and Confucian order. This book makes a major contribution to the study of the Taiping Rebellion and to our understanding of the ideology of both the rebels and the traditional imperial order they opposed. It will appeal to scholars in the fields of Chinese history, religion, and culture and of Christian theology and church history.
