This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardinal Tommaso de Vio (1469-1534), commonly known as Cajetan, remains a misunderstood figure. Cajetan on Sacred Doctrine is the first ever monograph on Cajetan as a theologian in his own right, and it fills an immense lacuna in the debate on the nature of sacred doctrine from the Thomism of the Renaissance. Confirming Cajetan as a key protagonist within the emergent Reformation, this work delivers an indispensable immersion into his theological method in relation to his closest predecessors and contemporaries: Hervaeus Natalis, Blessed Duns Scotus, Gregory of Rimini, Johannes Capreolus, Silvestro Mazzolini da Prierio, Martin Luther, and others. The first ever commentary on St. Thomas Aquinas’s entire Summa Theologiae was published by Cajetan. This monograph focuses primarily on the Summa Theologiae Ia pars, question 1, concerning sacred doctrine, and how Cajetan unpacks the potency of Aquinas’s opening syllogism, setting forth a coherent division of the question, and ultimately touching the mind of Aquinas when revealing the articles of the Apostles’ Creed as the Summa Theologiae’s macrostructure. Finally, we are shown how Cajetan emphasizes the essential link between ecclesiology and the communication of sacred doctrine, especially the papacy’s role in guaranteeing the proposal and explication of the faith. Cajetan’s accomplishments as a biblical exegete established him as a renowned Renaissance scholar and a forerunner of future ecumenical dialogue. Furthermore, his grasp of theology’s perennial properties continue to make him an important interlocutor in the renewed quest for a unity in theology in an ever more fragmented aggregation of theologies. Cajetan’s theological labor is a perpetuation of the via antiqua, a biblical-theological worldview handed down through Tradition. St. Gregory the Theologian (329-390), the via antiqua’s preeminent Eastern representative and chief theological constructor of Christendom, offers the monograph’s author--himself a Byzantine Hieromonk--a prime opportunity for a few closing insights on the innate symphony between two very distant periods and distinct theological traditions within the one ecumenical Church.

Book Summa Theologiae Prima Pars

Download or read book Summa Theologiae Prima Pars written by Thomas Aquinas and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2023-06-23 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Leo XIII promulgated Aeterni Patris in 1879, he stipulated that the "Leonine," or official, edition of the Summa should always be printed in conjunction with Cajetan's Commentary. For five hundred years they were studied together. Generations were trained by reading through the Summa article by article with Cajetan's commentaries in hand. Early printed editions of the Summa typically included them in a Talmudic arrangement, as marginal text running around each article by Aquinas. This edition imitates that example. Recently, serious thinkers of all denominations-and none-have found new reasons to be interested in St. Thomas. His text is deceptively simple, yet important issues are handled in every article, sometimes below the surface. Cajetan extracts these hidden issues, and explains and elaborates on them with remarkable affinity to modern analytical philosophy. Part of that affinity lies in the use of modal logic, a tool whose importance was overlooked between the Renaissance and the twentieth century. The time is ripe for an analytically-inspired translation of Thomas: hence this volume. Never until now has Cajetan's Commentary been put into English in its entirety. William Marshner's translation is consistent with fidelity to the technical force of the original. The translator's footnotes acknowledge what empirical science has made obsolete in the work of St. Thomas, and also make clear how much today's science would have saved Thomas useless labor. This volume will, for the first time, make Cajetan's help available to the modern reader.

Book A Handbook for Survivalists

  • ISBN : 1941394507
  • Pages : 58 pages

Download or read book A Handbook for Survivalists written by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee and published by The Golden Sufi Center. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This little book is about the real nature of survival at this pivotal moment on our shared journey together with the Earth. Can we really “survive” as human beings without reconnecting with the soul of nature, the living presence that has sustained us for millennia? What would our world be without wildness and wonder, without the beauty and magic of the natural world, without a dawn chorus or a meadow of wildflowers? How can we return our awareness to the light of our soul and the world soul, and so help to bring our world back into balance? Returning to this light, this primal song of creation, is a first step in our journey of survival. Without it there is no journey, no place of belonging. Note from the Author: While the wildfires were raging down the road in August I wrote this little book. It is about the values we need to survive this time of radical uncertainty as we help to seed a future in which the soul of humanity returns to its rightful place in harmony with the earth, the sun, the stars, the wind and the rain. I hope that you find this series of meditations an inspiration and illumination, helping to reconnect our consciousness to the living Earth as well as the deeper dimensions of our being. Please share it with all those who you think will benefit from its message of love and remembrance. —Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee, December 2020 "Written while under wildfire evacuation, the great Sufi master, Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee, offers us a timely real-world primer on how the light we call Spirit is our greatest tool in rebuilding the world. This book is, at once, personal and universal and deeply insightful and immediately practical. To quote Llewellyn from a chapter on chaos, 'Generosity may be more valuable than stockpiling food, kindness to others more potent than force. These values will determine what world we create, what is born from the ruins.' I urge you to drink here. This book will quench and sustain and bring us closer together."—MARK NEPO, author of The Book of Soul and More Together Than Alone "A Handbook for Survivalists reminds us we are nature and not just connected to nature, and also of the healing power of love and light—we came here as beings of divine light to caretake all the beauty of this great Earth. This book will inspire all readers to radiate their inner light while being conscious gardeners while we are here and have been given the gift of life. Every word of this book is meaningful. Immerse yourself in the wisdom shared. You will feel deeply motivated to live a simple life." —SANDRA INGERMAN, M.A., award-winning author of 12 books including Walking in Light and The Book of Ceremony: Invoking the Sacred in Everyday Life "Llewellyn weaves my favorite combination of attributes into a singular whole. He is an eco-feminist and a Sufi mystic. He is on fire for sustainability and he is grounded in deep silence. And, oh my goodness, can he write! Every sentence of this book of meditations is luminous. I found myself washed in peace and filled with hope. Highly recommended for our tumultuous times." —MIRABAI STARR, translator of the Spanish Mystics and author of Wild Mercy and Caravan of No Despair

Book Divine Science and the Science of God

Download or read book Divine Science and the Science of God written by Victor Preller and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-05-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Victor Preller examines the logical status of religious language in the light of recent developments in American analytic philosophy. The problem inherent in religious language is presented in terms of the referential status of the word God. The author argues that the significance of any referential term is dependent upon the ability of that term to play a significant role 'within' a unified conceptual system. The problem is shown to transcend the epistemological dogmas of Positivism and Conceptual Empiricism and to be inherent in any intelligible epistemology, including that of Thomas Aquinas, whose theological treatises serve as a model of religious language for the thesis of this book. According to Professor Preller, Divine Science (Aquinas' term for what we now call Natural Theology) results from a reflection upon the limitations encountered by the intellect in its attempt to render intelligible the objects of human experience. In the Science of God (Aquinas' term for that mode of knowing engendered by faith), the unknown meta-empirical referent of Divine Science becomes the object of the human intellect. While this study develops out of the discussions inaugurated by Flew and McIntyre in 'New Essays in Philosophical Theology', it rejects the excessively empirical approach of most other studies in that tradition. It applies post-positivistic analysis to specifically Catholic theological language, but it obviously applies to the theological language involved in any form of theism.

Download or read book Light Upon Light written by Andrew Vidich and published by Elite Books. This book was released on 2008-07-08 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light Upon Light is a book to touch the heart, and awaken the spirit. It takes the lives of some of the great spiritual masters of the last millennium, from Rumi, to twentieth century saint Darshan Singh, and illuminates their inner quests. More than simply biography, Light Upon Light delves into their perceptions of the world, the innermost workings of their minds, and the life incidents that led them to enlightenment. In this sense Light Upon Light is not about the spiritual path; it is designed to take the reader and carry them into the spiritual path, and perceive the wisdom of the masters from within. While author Andrew Vidich PhD has exemplary academic credentials, he writes from the heart, and calls the reader to a direct experience, a "felt sense" of the core of these masters' teachings. He also emphasizes meditation as the universal constant taught by all masters, and has provocative exercises in each chapter to stimulate self-reflection, contemplation, and to give the reader experience of practical meditation techniques. This is a book to be treasured by both long-time spiritual students, and those new to the great masters of the path.

  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2002-09-26

Download or read book St John the Divine written by Jeffrey F. Hamburger and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2002-09-26 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the Middle Ages, John the Evangelist, identified as the author of both the Book of Revelation and the most profound and theologically informed of the four Gospels, provided monks and nuns with a figure of inspiration and an exemplar of vision and virginity. Rather than the historical apostle, this book's protagonist is a persona of the Evangelist established in theology, the liturgy, and devotional practice: the model mystic, who, by virtue of his penetrating insight, was seen as having become a mirror image of Christ. In St. John the Divine, Jeffrey Hamburger identifies a remarkable set of images from the ninth to the fifteenth centuries that identify the inspired Evangelist so closely with the deity that he appears as his living image and embodiment. Hamburger explores the ways these representations of St. John in the guise of Christ elucidate the significance of images as such in medieval theology and mysticism. Above all, he shows how these artworks, presented together for the first time, epitomize the relationship between the visible and the invisible: between ideas, however abstract, and the concrete images that medieval Christians confronted face-to-face. -- Publisher's description.

Book Liturgical Feasts and Seasons

Download or read book Liturgical Feasts and Seasons written by Thomas Merton and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-11-09 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critical edition makes available for the first time Thomas Merton's novitiate conferences on liturgy. Though dating from the period just before the liturgical reforms of Vatican II, Merton's commentaries remain pertinent for their insights on his own commitment to this central dimension of Christian life, on his work introducing students to the patterns that would mark their lives as monks, and on the perennial meaning of the key events of the liturgical year. The thoroughly annotated text is preceded by an extensive introduction situating this material in the context of Merton's lifelong writing on liturgy. As Merton's former student Br. Paul Quenon writes in his foreword: "Nowhere in all of Merton's writings can one find such an extended demonstration of the hermeneutical approach he took in commenting on Scripture. This was focused intensely on finding the meaning Scripture had for our life in God . . . These notes . . . take us into one man's lifetime of reflection and seasoned experience of the Church Year."
