Book The Fourth Invasion

Download or read book The Fourth Invasion written by Giovanni Batz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Based on more than a decade of ethnographic research, The Fourth Invasion examines an Ixil Maya community's movement against the construction of one of the largest hydroelectric plants in Guatemala. The arrival of the Palo Viejo hydroelectric plant (built by the Italian corporation Enel Green Power) to the municipality of Cotzal highlighted the ongoing violence inflicted on Ixils by outsiders and the Guatemalan state. Locals referred to the building of the hydroelectric plant as the "new invasion" or "fourth invasion" for its similarity to preceding invasions: Spanish colonization, the creation of the plantation economy, and the state-led genocide during the Guatemalan armed conflict. Through a historical account of cyclical waves of invasions and resistance in Cotzal during the four invasions, Giovanni Batz argues that extractivist industries are a continuation of a colonial logic of extraction based on the displacement and destruction of Indigenous Peoples' territories and values that has existed since the arrival of the Spanish in 1524. The current movements in Cotzal, rooted in a long history of resistance, counter dominant narratives of Indigenous Peoples that often portray them as "conquered."

Book The Tripartite Realist War Analysing Russia s Invasion of Ukraine

Download or read book The Tripartite Realist War Analysing Russia s Invasion of Ukraine written by Danny Singh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-02 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers a detailed analysis on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. A book needs to be written on this to make sense, from a theoretical perspective, why this invasion has occurred and what the main actors are pursuing. The originality rests on testing main international relations theories: realism, liberalism and constructivism to the war that emerges with the practices and approaches during the Cold War to date from the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the Soviet Union (and now Russia) and Ukraine. The monograph commences with a historical overview of NATO and how it has engaged in expansionism policy to further contain Russia in contemporary international affairs with the accession of additional former Soviet states. This helps to explain the current Russian invasion of Ukraine that would attract great readership. The main argument presented rests on the pursuance of realist interests by NATO, Ukraine and Russia for containment, national security interests and as a response to the security dilemma respectively. This has served as the main catalyst of this conflict that has made diplomacy, international law and collective security measures problematic to implement.

Book Invasion of the Genes Genetic Heritage of India

Download or read book Invasion of the Genes Genetic Heritage of India written by B. S. Ahloowalia and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many historical events such as invasions, wars, civil unrests, migrations, and religious conversions have shaped the genetic heritage of India. These events created a potpourri of cultures and genes. The invaders came from Central Asia, Afghanistan, Arabia, Iran, Greece, Britain, France, and Portugal to loot and plunder wealth, but also left their genes behind among Indians irrespective of their caste or creed. The origin and migration of early man from Africa across the planet, the impact of the caste system and Indian religions on restricting gene flow, and the repeated breakdown of the caste system during the past 5,000 years are explained in Invasion of the Genes. A biologist and a geneticist, Prof. B.S. Ahloowalia says the prime motivation in writing the book was based on observing the similarity in culture, language, and resemblance of physical features between people of Persia, Arabia and North India. Dr. Ahloowalia did his Ph.D. from University of Chicago, and worked for the Agriculture and Food Development Authority, Dublin, Ireland. Later, he also worked for the International Atomic Energy Agency and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our world and our churches are neither sinful nor lost, they are dead. This dead world is the one that God engages and into which Jesus invaded with a radically different vision of life. In this groundbreaking work, based on his 211 Yale Beecher lectures, Brian K. Blount helps preachers effectively proclaim resurrection in a world consumed by death. Recognizing that both popular culture and popular Christianity are mesmerized by death and dying, Blount offers an alternative apocalyptic vision for our time--one that starts with a clear vision of life that obliterates death and reveals life's essence. Blount explores the portrait and meaning of resurrection through the New Testament (the Book of Revelation, the letters of Paul, and the Gospel of Mark) and explores how to biblically and theologically reconfigure apocalyptic preaching for today. With three illustrative sermons, this book is an ideal resource to help preachers proclaim the power of resurrection.

Book Russian Invasion of Ukraine Identity History Conflict

Download or read book Russian Invasion of Ukraine Identity History Conflict written by Vladimir Putin and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-26 with total page 1808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which began in 2014. Following the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution, Russia annexed Crimea, and Russian-backed paramilitaries seized part of the Donbas region of south-eastern Ukraine, which consists of Lugansk and Donetsk oblasts, sparking a regional war. In March 2021, Russia began a large military build-up along its border with Ukraine, eventually amassing up to 190,000 troops and their equipment. Despite the build-up, denials of plans to invade or attack Ukraine were issued by various Russian government officials up to the day before the invasion. On 21 February 2022, Russia recognized the Donetsk People's Republic and the Lugansk People's Republic, two self-proclaimed breakaway quasi-states in the Donbas. The next day, the Federation Council of Russia authorized the use of military force and Russian troops entered both territories. This book tries to shed light on the causes which led to this war. It presents arguments of both sides carried through the words of presidents Putin and Zelenskyy. This edition includes as well the book about the historical background of the conflict and the military actions during the war.
