Book excerpt: The Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame contains one of the largest collections of late nineteenth-century French stained glass outside of France. The French Gothic-inspired church has forty-four large stained glass windows containing two hundred and twenty scenes. Today, more than 100,000 visitors tour the basilica each year to admire its architecture or participate in the beautiful liturgies. Honoring both the Sacred Heart and the Virgin Mary, the vibrant windows have, for more than a century, drawn visitors and worshippers alike into a conversation with the art and faith found in the windows. This informative and conveniently sized guidebook tells the unique story of the windows: the improbable creation of a glassworks by cloistered Carmelite nuns in LeMans, France, and their stained glass that so perfectly illuminated the late nineteenth-century French Catholic spirituality of the Congregation of Holy Cross, who established the University of Notre Dame. The words of Father Edward Sorin, CSC, founder of the university, are featured throughout the text. He saw the basilica and its windows as an avenue for teaching this spirituality. The book describes the windows according to their location in the building, from the narthex at the entrance to the Lady Chapel behind the altar. Full-color photographs provide a detailed view of the scenes found in each window. These photos are accompanied by informed commentary on the historical and theological importance of the windows, the iconography of featured saints, and how they illuminate the work of the Holy Cross to educate both mind and spirit. Stories in Light is an easy-to-read book written for all who visit the basilica, including faculty, students, alumni, and friends and family of Notre Dame, and for readers everywhere who want to know more about the rich history and heritage of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart's stained glass.

Do you yearn for the peace, protection, and joy of a Christ-centered home? The Sacred Heart of Jesus is the answer. Appearing to her in a series of visions in 1673, Jesus promised St. Margaret Mary Alacoque that those who “expose and honor his most Sacred Heart” will find peace in the home, consolation in sorrow, and a source of refuge in times of trouble. In Secrets of the Sacred Heart, Emily Jaminet—executive director of the Sacred Heart Enthronement Network—weaves personal testimony, teachings, and reflection questions while exploring and applying each of Christ’s promises. Jaminet will guide you through a special enthronement ceremony to dedicate your home and inspire you to a lifelong devotion to the Sacred Heart. Whether you have already consecrated your home or are newly embarking on the journey of discovering the graces of this ancient practice, you will find a personal encounter with Jesus, who promises: peace in your home, safe refuge in life and death, blessings on your undertakings, an infinite source of mercy, and a restored and enlivened faith for those who surrender themselves wholly to Christ. Download or read book City and Campus written by John W. Stamper and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2024-04-01 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: City and Campus tells the rich history of a Midwest industrial town and its two academic institutions through the buildings that helped bring these places to life. John W. Stamper paints a narrative portrait of South Bend and the campuses of the University of Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s College from their founding and earliest settlement in the 1830s through the boom of the Roaring Twenties. Industrialist giants such as the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company and Oliver Chilled Plow Works invested their wealth into creating some of the city’s most important and historically significant buildings. Famous architects, including Frank Lloyd Wright, brought the latest trends in architecture to the heart of South Bend. Stamper also illuminates how Notre Dame’s founder and long-time president Father Edward Sorin, C.S.C., recruited other successful architects to craft in stone the foundations of the university and the college at the same time as he built the scholarship. City and Campus provides an engaging and definitive history of how this urban and academic environment emerged on the shores of the St. Joseph River.

Download or read book Faith Families Friends 150 Years of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish and Montegut Louisiana written by Laura A. Browning and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of the book is the history of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Parish and Sacred Heart Church in Montegut, Louisiana. The book follows the church-parish boundaries, including the term of each priest, and with the creation of each new parish out of Sacred Heart, St. Ann (1908), St. Joseph (1948), and St. Charles Borromeo (1971), the focus continues with the Priests of Sacred Heart. However, the book could not reflect Sacred Heart without writing about Montegut, Bourg, Little Caillou, and Pointe aux Chenes. The church has given us important roots, binding us as a church and community family, sticking us to this small place, Montegut. Sacred Heart Parish predates Sacred Heart Church by over thirty years. Pere Menard blessed the first dedicated chapel built on Dugas property at St. John the Baptist in le Terrebonne in November 1859. Sacred Heart of Jesus Church marks its founding as the creation of the parish by the Diocese of New Orleans in November 9, 1864.

Download or read book Monk s Notre Dame written by Edward A. Malloy C.S.C. and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book was a labor of love, and I hope my readers can share my pleasure in, once again, telling the stories of a place dear to us all.” —Father “Monk” Malloy, from the introduction This wonderful collection of humorous, poignant, and revealing stories and anecdotes offers special insight into the university that Father Malloy has served so faithfully. Monk’s Notre Dame has a story to tell about nearly every aspect of life at Notre Dame. Father Malloy intersperses fresh insight on traditional campus events, such as new students moving into the residence halls and the annual bookstore basketball tournament, with lesser-known stories, such as the mysterious disappearance and dramatic reappearance of a statue of Father Edward Sorin at the helm of a motorboat on St. Mary’s Lake. Father Malloy also presents charming vignettes about the people who have made Notre Dame the place it is. He offers a personal tribute to the legendary Reverend Theodore M. Hesburgh and includes warm and witty stories about other C.S.C. priests and brothers, such as Charles Doremus (“Father Duck”) and Brother Cosmas Guttly, who lived to be ninety-nine. Memorable anecdotes about professors, students, and “behind the scenes” workers are also captured in this book. Anyone who has studied, taught, or worked at the University of Notre Dame, and those otherwise interested in the university, will find Monk’s Notre Dame delightful.

Download or read book German Settlers of South Bend written by Gabrielle Robinson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the first German immigrants to northern Indiana is the story of the beginnings of South Bend. The predominant immigrant group from the 1840s to the 1870s, the Germans helped build South Bend from an isolated trading post into a thriving industrial city. They also played a key role in transforming the surrounding wilderness into rich and fertile farmland. Using first-hand personal accounts and public documents, German Settlers of South Bend illustrates the lives of these pioneer immigrants and their growing city. The material has been collected from a large number of sources on both sides of the Atlantic, including more than 200 German letters from the 1840s to the 1870s that provide glimpses into the day-to-day lives of these early settlers and their families back in Germany. Descendants of immigrants from all over the United States and Germany have come forward with genealogies, stories, and pictures, providing a far-reaching portrait of the times.
Download or read book Early Men of Holy Cross written by George Klawitter and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The religious congregation that came to be known as Holy Cross began in France when Basile Moreau joined the Brothers of St. Joseph to a small band of priests he had gathered to work in the diocese of Le Mans, France. The early Brothers of Holy Cross were an energetic group, dedicated to teaching in small parish schools. Eventually Moreau sent them to missions in Algeria and Indiana where they thrived, often under harsh pioneer conditions. Based on their letters, Klawitter has reconstructed the lives of eleven of these courageous men whose apostolic work brought hope to children on three continents. Often neglected by historians, these early religious deserve attention: they are the foundation of what has become a strong force in educational institutions around the world, in North and South America, Asia, and Africa.
