Book excerpt: Warhorses thundering across deserts and flames ignited by men loyal to the Catholic Church created a personal battle for Berbers inhabiting the wastelands of Jordan, Egypt and Jerusalem. The year 1571 was proving to be a dark time for members of the Catholic religion. Inquisitions and burnings at the stake made many fear for their lives. Scientists possessing knowledge disproving many teachings of the Church met in secret. Corrupt cardinals fed self-serving lies to Pope Pius V – lies he willingly accepted. Within the Vatican, men of the cloth created laws that would haunt popes for centuries. In its ruthless quest for money and control of trade routes, the Church employed rogue knights and mercenaries to attack caravans and Berber encampments. During one such raid, Zakar, a Berber prince, was killed by a lance. That night two aliens of the Serpent Clan, believed by the Vatican to be vampires, resurrected Zakar from the dead. Within months, the combined forces of Knights of the Black Tower, under the command of General Kaoly, and a unit of Berber knights led by Zakar ,became a threat to the Vatican.

Book Betrayal and Betrayers

Download or read book Betrayal and Betrayers written by Malin Akerstrom and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Betrayal has a deep fascination. It captures our imagination in part because we have all betrayed or been betrayed, in small or large ways. Despite this there has been little serious work on the subject. It was this absence that inspired this book.As Akerstrom notes, betrayal is something that most people have encountered at some point in their lives. She defines betrayal as a breach of trust, when information is shared beyond an agreed upon boundary of relations, whether that boundary is a pair of friends or a nation. Taking as a point of departure Simmers work on secrets and secrecy, Akerstrom discusses categories of.betrayal, and conditions that influence its intensity. Sometimes the betrayer is seen as a hero and at other times a traitor; and sometimes there are competing loyalties. In certain situations, she reminds us, it is difficult to avoid betrayal or the perception of betrayal. Akerstrom discusses strategies people employ to avoid betraying, ranging from not telling, to making sure one does not know about something in the first place. With deft precision, she clarifies distinctions and in the process broadens our understanding.Initially inspired by insights arising from her research on the criminal informer, for which she had done in-depth interviews, Akerstrom supplements these with interviews with policemen. She has also drawn from her experiences in the field of social work, particularly with women's and crime shelters. Using biographies, autobiographies and a broad range of literature related to spies, World War II, the McCarthy era, and recent literature on whistle-blowing, Akerstrom has defined a fascinating theme. While her illustrations are sometimes dramatic, she hopes that readers will perceive obvious parallels with their own experiences. Social psychologists, sociologists, criminologists, and others interested in secrecy, secrets, and those who betray them to others will find this an unusual and absorbing volume.

Book The Myth of Aristotle s Development and the Betrayal of Metaphysics

Download or read book The Myth of Aristotle s Development and the Betrayal of Metaphysics written by Walter E. Wehrle and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2001-02-28 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this radical reinterpretation of Aristotle's Metaphysics, Walter E. Wehrle demonstrates that developmental theories of Aristotle are based on a faulty assumption: that the fifth chapter of Categories ('substance') is an early theory of metaphysics that Aristotle later abandoned. The ancient commentators unanimously held that the Categories was semantical and not metaphysical, and so there was no conflict between it and the Metaphysics proper. They were right, Wehrle argues: the modern assumption, to the contrary, is based on a medieval mistake and is perpetuated by the anti-metaphysical postures of contemporary philosophy. Furthermore, by using the logico-semantical distinction in Aristotle's works, Wehrle shows just how the principal 'contradictions' in Metaphysics Books VII and VIII can be resolved. The result in an interpretation of Aristotle that challenges mainstream viewpoints, revealing a supreme philosopher in sharp contrast to the developmentalists' version.

Book Plunder of the Ancients

Download or read book Plunder of the Ancients written by Lucinda Schroeder and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the heart of Indian Country in the American west, clandestine criminals have profited greatly from the sale of sacred Native American artifacts stolen from tribal lands. These artifacts were so ancient they had been used since the migration of the first Americans into North America some 15,000 years ago. In 1998 the illegal trafficking of these artifacts peaked in Santa Fe, New Mexico. At the same time, the tribes and pueblos in New Mexico and Arizona fell into crisis because many of their sacred ceremonies couldn’t be conducted. Without their ceremonial objects, sickness and deep depression became prevalent and the spiritual leaders became desperate to get their divine artifacts back to restore the health, happiness and balance of their people. Plunder of the Ancients is a rare look inside an undercover investigation in which special agent Lucinda Schroeder reveals the details of her case in which she was assigned to expose Indian Art thieves and dealers in Santa Fe, New Mexico, who out of unmitigated greed, were exploiting sacred artifacts for huge sums of money. Her final task was to bring the criminals to justice; recover the sacred artifacts and return them to their rightful people. But all did not go well for Schroeder. While her cover was airtight, she faced betrayal from people she regarded beyond reproach. Her additional challenge then became to find out who was so determined to undermine and even destroy her mission of restoring the spiritual lives of Native Americans who were suffering. Plunder of the Ancients takes readers along on a dangerous and unprecedented assignment as Schroeder battles betrayal, evil spirits, and shape shifters for a cause she strongly believes in.
