Book Encyclopedia of Applied Ethics S Z Index

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Applied Ethics S Z Index written by Ruth F. Chadwick and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied ethics, a subdiscipline of philosophy, lends itself to an encyclopedia format because of the many industries and intellectual fields that it encompasses. The Encyclopedia of Applied Ethics is based on twelve major categories, such as Biomedical Ethics and Environmental Ethics. Religious traditions that embody normative beliefs, as well as classical theories of ethics, are explored in a non-judgmental manner. Each of the twelve categories is divided into discrete areas that are covered by 5,000-6,000 word articles. Each of the 281 articles begins with a definition of the subject and includes a table of contents, glossary of key terms, and bibliography. Second- and third- level headings, boxes, sidebars, and the like emphasize the reference-oriented nature of the material. The four volumes are arranged in an A-Z format, with a complete subject index at the end of the last volume. Articles are written by international experts, arranged alphabetically by title, not by subject, and cross-referenced so the reader can locate relevant information in other articles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leading introduction to computer algorithms in use today, including fifty algorithms every programmer should know Princeton Computer Science professors, Robert Sedgewick and Kevin Wayne, survey the most important computer algorithms in use and of interest to anyone working in science, mathematics, and engineering, and those who use computation in the liberal arts. They provide a full treatment of data structures and algorithms for key areas that enable you to confidently implement, debug, and put them to work in any computational environment. Fundamentals: Basic programming models Data abstraction Bags, queues, and stacks Analysis of algorithms Sorting Elementary sorts Mergesort Quicksort Priority queues Applications Graphs Undirected graphs Directed graphs Minimum spanning trees Shortest paths Strings String sorts Tries Substring search Regular expressions Data compression These algorithms are generally ingenious creations that, remarkably, can each be expressed in just a dozen or two lines of code. As a group, they represent problem-solving power of amazing scope. They have enabled the construction of computational artifacts, the solution of scientific problems, and the development of commercial applications that would not have been feasible without them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date, comprehensive account of major issues in finitemixture modeling This volume provides an up-to-date account of the theory andapplications of modeling via finite mixture distributions. With anemphasis on the applications of mixture models in both mainstreamanalysis and other areas such as unsupervised pattern recognition, speech recognition, and medical imaging, the book describes theformulations of the finite mixture approach, details itsmethodology, discusses aspects of its implementation, andillustrates its application in many common statisticalcontexts. Major issues discussed in this book include identifiabilityproblems, actual fitting of finite mixtures through use of the EMalgorithm, properties of the maximum likelihood estimators soobtained, assessment of the number of components to be used in themixture, and the applicability of asymptotic theory in providing abasis for the solutions to some of these problems. The author alsoconsiders how the EM algorithm can be scaled to handle the fittingof mixture models to very large databases, as in data miningapplications. This comprehensive, practical guide: * Provides more than 800 references-40% published since 1995 * Includes an appendix listing available mixture software * Links statistical literature with machine learning and patternrecognition literature * Contains more than 100 helpful graphs, charts, and tables Finite Mixture Models is an important resource for both applied andtheoretical statisticians as well as for researchers in the manyareas in which finite mixture models can be used to analyze data.

Book excerpt: Droughts occur in arid and semi-arid areas of the world, but also in humid areas, and can develop over short periods (flash drought) or longer periods (seasons/decades). Even though progress has been made, it remains difficult to adequately characterize, monitor, forecast and manage droughts, due to their multi-faceted nature.Usually, drought does

Book Theorem Proving in Higher Order Logics

Download or read book Theorem Proving in Higher Order Logics written by Stefan Berghofer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-04 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 22nd International Conference on Theorem Proving in Higher Order Logics (TPHOLs 2009), which was held during August 17-20, 2009 in Munich, Germany. TPHOLs covers all aspects of theorem proving in higher order logics as well as related topics in theorem proving and veri?cation. There were 55 papers submitted to TPHOLs 2009 in the full research c- egory, each of which was refereed by at least three reviewers selected by the ProgramCommittee. Of these submissions, 26 researchpapers and 1 proofpearl were accepted for presentation at the conference and publication in this v- ume. In keeping with longstanding tradition, TPHOLs 2009 also o?ered a venue for the presentation of emerging trends, where researchers invited discussion by means of a brief introductory talk and then discussed their work at a poster session. A supplementary proceedings volume was published as a 2009 technical report of the Technische Universit¨ at Munc ¨ hen. The organizers are grateful to David Basin, John Harrison and Wolfram Schulte for agreeing to give invited talks. We also invited four tool devel- ers to give tutorials about their systems. The following speakers kindly accepted our invitation and we are grateful to them: John Harrison (HOL Light), Adam Naumowicz (Mizar), Ulf Norell (Agda) and Carsten Schur ¨ mann (Twelf).
