Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sèvres Porcelain of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle In England, during the first quarter of the nineteenth century, the taste for Sevres Porcelain was universal among the many rich collectors of the time, who naturally followed the example set by the Prince Regent. Evidence of this taste is to be found in the collections belonging to the nobility, which for the most part were brought together about this period. Amongst them were many splendid examples Of Sevres Porcelain. It is to be regretted, however, that many of the finest specimens, through the dispersal Of some of these Old collections, have left the country, never to return. One reason for the acquisition of Sevres, on the part of wealthy English connoisseurs, to the exclusion of other and contemporary productions, was the general and intense antagonism to all Napoleonic forms of art. Sevres Porcelain of the best periods found a ready market in England; and many French nobles fallen on evil times, and who, under the Bourbon monarchy, would rather have sold their domains than their valued porcelains, Royal gifts as they were, secretly disposed Of them to English purchasers. The appreciation of Sevres Porcelain, unlike that of many other Ceramic arts, has been little influenced by passing fashion or fancy. The writer, however, ventures to assert that it is only in more recent years that its artistic and technical excellence has been adequately recognised. In the first half Of the nineteenth century a Sevres vase was regarded by most people simply as a Sevres vase, very little count being taken of its artistic quality or period of manufacture, provided Of course that it came under the designation of soft paste. At the present day it is satisfactory to note a desire for purity Of design and sound principles Of construction and decoration rather than over - exuberance Of enrichment. The result Of this change Of sentiment is that a collector nowadays would rather possess a small and dainty vase or cabaret made within the first dozen years of the foundation of the Factory, than a vase or pair of vases of greater magnitude and later style Of decoration. Happily the Royal Collection, while including amongst its many specimens every representative type. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A landmark retrospective on the Art Deco painter exploring her intersectional identities Tamara de Lempicka (1894-1980), the "Baroness with a Brush," is often cast as one of Art Deco's most celebrated artists, though her work transcends categorization, incorporating elements of Cubism and Neoclassicism in a distinctive, sensuous blend of form and function. Lempicka's paintings, including a self-portrait as the driver of a sleek green Bugatti, often depict dazzling, self-assured women, exuding elegance and transgressive sexuality while combining the modern with the classical. This gorgeous survey presents the full arc of Lempicka's career in the context of her life and her evolving identity, including her Polish and Russian origins, her marriages and other relationships, and her time in France, Italy, and the United States. This book unfolds chronologically through three sections that mark the stages of the artist's life and the evolution of her artistic style, with particular focus on her Jewish heritage, her expression of gender, and her sexuality. Book Ancient and Modern Gems and Jewels

Download or read book Ancient and Modern Gems and Jewels written by Cristina Piacenti Aschengreen and published by Royal Collection Trust. This book was released on 2008 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This catalogue is the first comprehensive study of the 328 objects that make up this little-known area of the Royal Collection. The ancient gems and intaglios have been catalogued by John Boardman, and although they are few in number, they include the magnificent Claudius cameo that was once in the collection of Charles I. The later, post-Renaissance pieces have been studied by Kirsten Aschengreen Piacenti, and these include the great Tudor portrait cameos, a superb series of Italian sixteenth-century portrait cameos of North Italian 'Beauties', the group of exquisite eighteenth-century Italian carnelians bought by George III from Consul Smith in 1762 and a fine selection of Garter badges, several bearing the signature of the gem-engravers Marchant and Burch." "Close examination by gemmologists has produced an accurate technical analysis of all the stones and settings, and newly commissioned photographs bring out the distinctive features of each piece. Casts are illustrated wherever possible, and close-tip images of signatures, inscriptions and hallmarks support the detailed descriptions in the text. Research into the collection has resulted in new information concerning the mounts of many of the gems, and this is summarised in an illustrated appendix. Also published in full, and for the first time, is the collection of intaglios once owned by Henry, Prince of Wales, which was recorded in a series of wax impressions made by Elias Ashmole at the request of Charles II in June 1660."--BOOK JACKET.

It thus complements The Early Italian Pictures by John Shearman which was published by Cambridge in 1983. The catalogue includes the work of many great painters - Domenichino, Guercino, Guido Reni, Batoni, the two Ricci, Annibale Carracci, Zuccarelli and a famous, unrivalled group of paintings by Canaletto, most of which were commissioned directly from the artist by Joseph Smith and subsequently bought with the rest of his collection by George III. A long introduction traces the history from Charles I onwards of English royal interest in Italian pictures of the seventeenth- and eighteenth-centuries.

Book excerpt: Written by award-winning African novelist Mariama Bâ and translated from the original French, So Long a Letter has been recognized as one of Africa’s 100 Best Books of the 20th Century. The brief narrative, written as an extended letter, is a sequence of reminiscences —some wistful, some bitter—recounted by recently widowed Senegalese schoolteacher Ramatoulaye Fall. Addressed to a lifelong friend, Aissatou, it is a record of Ramatoulaye’s emotional struggle for survival after her husband betrayed their marriage by taking a second wife. This semi-autobiographical account is a perceptive testimony to the plight of educated and articulate Muslim women. Angered by the traditions that allow polygyny, they inhabit a social milieu dominated by attitudes and values that deny them status equal to men. Ramatoulaye hopes for a world where the best of old customs and new freedom can be combined. Considered a classic of contemporary African women’s literature, So Long a Letter is a must-read for anyone interested in African literature and the passage from colonialism to modernism in a Muslim country. Winner of the prestigious Noma Award for Publishing in Africa.
