Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from S. Peter, Bishop of Rome: Or, the Roman Episcopate of the Prince of the Apostles Nevertheless, the Catholic tradition that S. Peter was Bishop of Rome is of importance not only from an historical point of view, but also in the province of dogma within the Church, and of controversy with those outside its pale. For, as held by Catholics, in correlation with the succession of the Roman Pontiffs, it is in its theological aspect a great fact intimately bound up with what is of revealed faith viz., the permanent institution by our Lord Jesus Christ of the Primacy in His Church. It forms, indeed, the actual verification in all time of that wondrous promise recorded in the Gospels which our Divine Lord made to S. Peter: Thou art Peter: and upon this rock I will build My Church. 9 Whilst, as regards controversy, it is a matter of vital moment to Protestants; and one which they have ever most strenuously assailed, driven thereto by the very necessity of their position as opponents of the Catholic Faith. Hence, in spite of my general aim, I have found it impossible to avoid treating the subject to a large extent apologetically, and in its theological aspect. Book 40 Questions About Roman Catholicism

Download or read book 40 Questions About Roman Catholicism written by Gregg R. Allison and published by Kregel Publications. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Straightforward answers about Roman Catholicism for a Protestant audience The Roman Catholic faith is one of the world's most widespread religious traditions, yet the unique aspects of Roman Catholicism elicit perennial questions from adherents and outsiders alike. Such questions tend to fall into three major categories: historical backgrounds, theological matters, and personal relationships. Using Catholic Church documents and the writings of Catholic scholars, Baptist systematic theologian Gregg R. Allison distills the teachings of Catholicism around forty common questions about Catholic foundations, beliefs, and practices. The accessible question-and-answer format guides readers to the areas of interest, including: Where do Roman Catholic and Protestant beliefs differ? What happens during a Roman Catholic Mass? How does Roman Catholicism understand the biblical teaching about Mary? Who are the saints and what is their role? How can my Roman Catholic loved ones and I talk about the gospel? 40 Questions About Roman Catholicism explores theology and practice, doctrine and liturgy, sacraments and Mariology, contributions and scandals, and many other things, clarifying both real and perceived differences and similarities with other Christian traditions.

Book Rome and the Eastern Churches

Download or read book Rome and the Eastern Churches written by Aidan Nichols and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second edition of this major work, Dominican theologian Aidan Nichols provides a systematic account of the origins, development and recent history—now updated—of the relations between Rome and all separated Eastern Christians. By the end of the twentieth century, events in Eastern Europe, notably the conflict between the Orthodox and Uniate Churches in the Ukraine and Rumania, the tension between Rome and the Moscow patriarchate over the re-establishment of a Catholic hierarchy in the Russian Federation, and the civil war in the then federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, brought attention to the fragile relations between Catholicism and Orthodoxy, which once had been two parts of a single Communion. At the start of the twenty-first century, in the pontificate of Benedict XVI, a papal visit to Russia—at the symbolic level, a major step forward in the ‘healing of memories’— appears at last a realistic hope. In addition, the schisms separating Rome from the two lesser, but no less interesting, Christian families, the Assyrian (Nestorian) and Oriental Orthodox (Monophysite) Churches, are examined. The book also contains an account of the origins and present condition of the Eastern Catholic Churches—a deeper knowledge of which, by their Western brethren, was called for at the Second Vatican Council as well as by subsequent synods and popes. Providing both historical and theological explanations of these divisions, this illuminating and thought-provoking book chronicles the recent steps taken to mend them in the Ecumenical Movement and offers a realistic assessment of the difficulties (theological and political) which any reunion would experience.
