Book Periods and Nori Motives

Download or read book Periods and Nori Motives written by Annette Huber and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-08 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book casts the theory of periods of algebraic varieties in the natural setting of Madhav Nori’s abelian category of mixed motives. It develops Nori’s approach to mixed motives from scratch, thereby filling an important gap in the literature, and then explains the connection of mixed motives to periods, including a detailed account of the theory of period numbers in the sense of Kontsevich-Zagier and their structural properties. Period numbers are central to number theory and algebraic geometry, and also play an important role in other fields such as mathematical physics. There are long-standing conjectures about their transcendence properties, best understood in the language of cohomology of algebraic varieties or, more generally, motives. Readers of this book will discover that Nori’s unconditional construction of an abelian category of motives (over fields embeddable into the complex numbers) is particularly well suited for this purpose. Notably, Kontsevich's formal period algebra represents a torsor under the motivic Galois group in Nori's sense, and the period conjecture of Kontsevich and Zagier can be recast in this setting. Periods and Nori Motives is highly informative and will appeal to graduate students interested in algebraic geometry and number theory as well as researchers working in related fields. Containing relevant background material on topics such as singular cohomology, algebraic de Rham cohomology, diagram categories and rigid tensor categories, as well as many interesting examples, the overall presentation of this book is self-contained.

Book Quantum Symmetries

Download or read book Quantum Symmetries written by Alain Connes and published by North-Holland. This book was released on 1998 with total page 1038 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. One of the greatest challenges that theoretical physics faces at the end of the century is to blend together the two revolutions of the beginning of the century, namely general relativity and quantum mechanics. One message that has become clear from the start and is common to both revolutions is that there is no limit to the level of sophistication of mathematics that will become essential to physics. This book comprises the lecture notes of the 1995 Les Houches Summer School. The aim of the school was to cover a wide range of areas, from theoretical physics to abstract mathematics, that are relevant in the search of a quantum theory of gravity. The lectures provide a systematic introduction to topological and conformal field theories, supersymmetry and super Yang-Mills theories, string theory and superstring dualities, integrable lattice models and quantum groups, non commutative geometry and the theory of diffeomorphism groups. It is di

Book Model Theory of Fields

Download or read book Model Theory of Fields written by David Marker and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The model theory of fields is a fascinating subject stretching from Tarski's work on the decidability of the theories of the real and complex fields to Hrushovksi's recent proof of the Mordell-Lang conjecture for function fields. This volume provides an insightful introduction to this active area, concentrating on connections to stability theory.

Download or read book Field Arithmetic written by Michael D. Fried and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field Arithmetic explores Diophantine fields through their absolute Galois groups. This largely self-contained treatment starts with techniques from algebraic geometry, number theory, and profinite groups. Graduate students can effectively learn generalizations of finite field ideas. We use Haar measure on the absolute Galois group to replace counting arguments. New Chebotarev density variants interpret diophantine properties. Here we have the only complete treatment of Galois stratifications, used by Denef and Loeser, et al, to study Chow motives of Diophantine statements. Progress from the first edition starts by characterizing the finite-field like P(seudo)A(lgebraically)C(losed) fields. We once believed PAC fields were rare. Now we know they include valuable Galois extensions of the rationals that present its absolute Galois group through known groups. PAC fields have projective absolute Galois group. Those that are Hilbertian are characterized by this group being pro-free. These last decade results are tools for studying fields by their relation to those with projective absolute group. There are still mysterious problems to guide a new generation: Is the solvable closure of the rationals PAC; and do projective Hilbertian fields have pro-free absolute Galois group (includes Shafarevich's conjecture)?

Book Model Theory and Algebraic Geometry

Download or read book Model Theory and Algebraic Geometry written by Elisabeth Bouscaren and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-03-14 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction to the recent exciting developments in the applications of model theory to algebraic geometry, illustrated by E. Hrushovski's model-theoretic proof of the geometric Mordell-Lang Conjecture starts from very basic background and works up to the detailed exposition of Hrushovski's proof, explaining the necessary tools and results from stability theory on the way. The first chapter is an informal introduction to model theory itself, making the book accessible (with a little effort) to readers with no previous knowledge of model theory. The authors have collaborated closely to achieve a coherent and self- contained presentation, whereby the completeness of exposition of the chapters varies according to the existence of other good references, but comments and examples are always provided to give the reader some intuitive understanding of the subject.

Book Automorphisms of First order Structures

Download or read book Automorphisms of First order Structures written by Richard W. Kaye and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1994 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of articles, some introductory, some extended surveys, and some containing previously unpublished research, on a range of topics linking infinite permutation group theory and model theory. Topics covered include: oligomorphic permutation groups and omega-categoricalstructures; totally categorical structures and covers; automorphism groups of recursively saturated structures; Jordan groups; Hrushovski's constructions of pseudoplanes; permutation groups of finite Morley rank; applications of permutation group theory to models of set theory without the axiom ofchoice. There are introductory chapters by the editors on general model theory and permutation theory, recursively saturated structures, and on groups of finite Morley rank. The book is almost self-contained, and should be useful to both a beginning postgraduate student meeting the subject for the firsttime, and to an active researcher from either of the two main fields looking for an overview of the subject.

Book Lectures on Automorphic L functions

Download or read book Lectures on Automorphic L functions written by James W. Cogdell and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2009 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive account of the crucial role automorphic $L$-functions play in number theory and in the Langlands program, especially the Langlands functoriality conjecture. There has been a recent major development in the Langlands functoriality conjecture by the use of automorphic $L$-functions, namely, by combining converse theorems of Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro with the Langlands-Shahidi method. This book provides a step-by-step introduction to these developments and explains how the Langlands functoriality conjecture implies solutions to several outstanding conjectures in number theory, such as the Ramanujan conjecture, Sato-Tate conjecture, and Artin's conjecture. It would be ideal for an introductory course in the Langlands program. Titles in this series are co-published with The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences (Toronto, Ontario, Canada). Table of Contents: James W.Cogdell, Lectures on $L$-functions, converse theorems, and functoriality for $GL_n$: Preface; Modular forms and their $L$-functions; Automorphic forms; Automorphic representations; Fourier expansions and multiplicity one theorems; Eulerian integral representations; Local $L$-functions: The non-Archimedean case; The unramified calculation; Local $L$-functions: The Archimedean case; Global $L$-functions; Converse theorems; Functoriality; Functoriality for the classical groups; Functoriality for the classical groups, II.
