Book The Sounds of Early Cinema

Download or read book The Sounds of Early Cinema written by Richard Abel and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2001-10-03 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sounds of Early Cinema is devoted exclusively to a little-known, yet absolutely crucial phenomenon: the ubiquitous presence of sound in early cinema. "Silent cinema" may rarely have been silent, but the sheer diversity of sound(s) and sound/image relations characterizing the first 20 years of moving picture exhibition can still astonish us. Whether instrumental, vocal, or mechanical, sound ranged from the improvised to the pre-arranged (as in scripts, scores, and cue sheets). The practice of mixing sounds with images differed widely, depending on the venue (the nickelodeon in Chicago versus the summer Chautauqua in rural Iowa, the music hall in London or Paris versus the newest palace cinema in New York City) as well as on the historical moment (a single venue might change radically, and many times, from 1906 to 1910). Contributors include Richard Abel, Rick Altman, Edouard Arnoldy, Mats Björkin, Stephen Bottomore, Marta Braun, Jean Châteauvert, Ian Christie, Richard Crangle, Helen Day-Mayer, John Fullerton, Jane Gaines, André Gaudreault, Tom Gunning, François Jost, Charlie Keil, Jeff Klenotic, Germain Lacasse, Neil Lerner, Patrick Loughney, David Mayer, Domi-nique Nasta, Bernard Perron, Jacques Polet, Lauren Rabinovitz, Isabelle Raynauld, Herbert Reynolds, Gregory A. Waller, and Rashit M. Yangirov.

  • Pages : 346 pages

Book excerpt: Brought up in a strict and sheltered household, the daughter of a Mohawk chief and a non-native woman, Pauline Johnson struggled to make an independent life for herself. She found it as a poet and performer whose dramatic recitals skirted the boundaries of what was acceptable to "respectable" Canadian society. Her performances took her from the backwoods of British Columbia's gold country to the drawing rooms of England. Onstage she assumed the role of an Indian princess, while in her personal life she observed Victorian moral strictures, all the while falling regularly and desperately into unrequited love. Pauline is the fascinating story of a charismatic woman whose struggles with culture and identity still engage us today.

Book Delphi Complete Harvard Classics and Shelf of Fiction Illustrated

Download or read book Delphi Complete Harvard Classics and Shelf of Fiction Illustrated written by Charles W. Eliot and published by Delphi Classics. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 33052 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regarded by many as the most comprehensive anthology of all time, ‘The Harvard Classics’ was first published in 1909 under the supervision of the Harvard president Charles W. Eliot. An esteemed academic, Eliot had argued that the elements of a liberal education could be gained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. The publisher P. F. Collier challenged Eliot to make good on this statement and ‘Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf’ was the result. Eight years later Eliot added a further 20 volumes as a sub-collection titled ‘The Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction’, offering some of the greatest novels and short stories of world literature. The exhaustive anthology of the ‘The Harvard Classics’ comprises every major literary figure, philosopher, religion, folklore and historical subject up to the twentieth century. This comprehensive eBook presents the complete anthology, with Eliot’s original introductions, numerous illustrations, rare texts and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to life and works of the authors featured in the anthology * All 51 volumes of ‘The Harvard Classics’ * Eliot’s original concise introductions * Eliot’s general introduction to the anthology (Volume 50) * The complete 20 volume edition of ‘The Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction’ * Images of how the books were first published, giving your eReader a taste of the original texts * Excellent formatting of the texts * Major works include the original illustrations that accompanied the text * Easily locate the chapters and sections you want to read with individual contents tables * Precise arrangement of texts into the original anthology order * A veritable digital library comprised in a single eBook! Book The Cry Room and Other Places

Download or read book The Cry Room and Other Places written by John Boaz (M.D.) and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It required fourteen years to complete the following forty-some sketches outlining my family background and personal history from birth until I left home at eighteen in order to try my hand as a university student. Excepting Ralph Ellison's final work, that may be record slowness in pages per day, I'm not sure. Only recently have I experienced a sense of urgency, for surely tomb-time cannot be far away. I enjoyed writing them, fancying each one a regional canvas a la Benton, Curry, Sample, Hogue, Marsh, et al., paintings depicting now dead worlds of steam locomotives and noisy roundhouses, small town killings and tank town tarts, railroad boomers and Main Street toughs, three dollar whore houses and cigarette-fogged pool rooms, death traps masquerading as idyllic farms and school systems that imposed death at an early age on children from "across the tracks." It's all been written, it's all been painted before; but I had to recreate it once again because it was mine, and I loved it.

Book AI vs Humans

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael W. Eysenck
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2021-12-30
  • ISBN : 1000481441
  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book AI vs Humans written by Michael W. Eysenck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great majority of books on artificial intelligence are written by AI experts who understandably focus on its achievements and potential transformative effects on society. In contrast, AI vs Humans is written by two psychologists (Michael and Christine Eysenck) whose perspective on AI (including robotics) is based on their knowledge and understanding of human cognition. This book evaluates the strengths and limitations of people and AI. The authors’ expertise equips them well to consider this by seeing how well (or badly) AI compares to human intelligence. They accept that AI matches or exceeds human ability in many spheres such as mathematical calculations, complex games (e.g., chess, Go, and poker), diagnosis from medical images, and robotic surgery. However, the human tendency to anthropomorphise has led many people to claim mistakenly that AI systems can think, infer, reason, and understand while engaging in information processing. In fact, such systems lack all those cognitive skills and are also deficient in the quintessentially human abilities of flexibility of thinking and general intelligence. At a time when human commitment to AI appears unstoppable, this up-to-date book advocates a symbiotic and co-operative relationship between humans and AI. It will be essential reading for anyone interested in AI and human cognition.
