Download or read book The Epistles of St John Classic Reprint written by Charles Gore and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistles of St. John An exposition of St. John's Epistles by the present writer was announced, as one of a series of such expositions, in 1900. This was to have been a revision of lectures actually delivered in Westminster Abbey, but it was never accomplished. And now that I am taking advantage of some recovered leisure to publish the intended exposition, I have not gone back upon the reports of former lectures. The present exposition is entirely new. Both in the introduction and in the exposition itself I have had in view especially the ordinary man and woman who lack the equipment and knowledge of a scholar, and I have tried to take no knowledge for granted that an ordinary education does not supply. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John the Baptist HE life and character of John the Baptist have T always had a great fascination for me; and I am thankful to have been permitted to write this book. But I am more thankful for the hours of absorbing interest spent in the study of his portraiture as given in the Gospels. I know of nothing that makes so pleasant a respite from the pressure of life's fret and strain, as to bathe mind and spirit in the translucent waters of Scripture biography. Book The Ministry of St John the Baptist Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ministry of St John the Baptist Classic Reprint written by Henry James Coleridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ministry of St. John the Baptist If I might venture to utter a criticism on the many excellent works which already exist on the Life of our Lord, I should be inclined to add that it is just as to the arrangement and gradual unfolding of the providence of God as to the Public Life of our Lord that I have been accustomed to find them least satisfactory. It is pre-eminently as to that arrangement and unfolding that the true principles of what is called the Harmony of the Gospels need to be ascertained and applied, and yet it seems as if, even after the lapse of so many centuries, these true principles were but little attended to. The great St. Augustine, whose work on the Consensus Emm gelz'smrum is so full of various merit, has yet given all the authority of his name to a principle which can be shown to be altogether a misconception in this subject matter, and which, if a misconception, cannot be prac tically applied without producing confusion. For he has taken St. Matthew's Gospel as the basis to which to conform the statements of the other Evangelists, it being now generally admitted by students on the subject that the order of St. Matthew's Gospel is not chronological. In modern times there is a tendency to distinguish between the three first Evangelists, who go by the name of the Synoptists, and the fourth, who is supposed to fill up the gaps left in the history by his predecessors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Cartulary Of The Hospital Of St. John The Baptist, Vol. 2 Cartula7y qf St. Frz'deswz'de's was theirs no longer. The Hospital, which had already acquired quitrent of five shillings ou the tenement (see no. Obtained possession, but the rubric of one of the deeds in the Cartulary of 51. Frz'deswz'de's asserts that it was absque iusto tz'tulo, ui credz'tur. There must have been some composition between the two parties, and until 1338 we find St. F rideswide's in receipt of rent of seven shillings from two shops (see no. Which from the rental of 1328 we know to be the two shops under Burwoldscot Hall. The deeds of the Hospital throw no light ou this matter, nor do they mention the fact that some of the shops facing the street were not acquired by the H05pital. Of the six shops that fronted High Street, the Hospital had only three. Beginning at the east there was sh0p and solar, 13 feet wide according to the survey made in 1772, owned by the Hospital and always leased apart from the rest; then came the passage, 8 feet wide, which led to the Hall at the back; then sh0p of N ew College, 12 feet wide, which on the first floor extended over the passage then two shops, 20 feet wide, which were acquired by Magdalen in 1602 (see no. One of them having belonged once to St. F rideswide's; then two shops belonging to the Hospital, beneath chamber which was part of Broad gates. In Skelton's Oronz'a Antiqua (p1. 141) is plan of Amsterdam about 1730, which shows the size and position of Broadgates. A deed at Lincoln College says that it was bounded 011 the north at one part by Oliphant Hall, subsequently part of Lincoln, while deed no. 492 shows that in another part of its northern side it was bounded in 1469 by Brasenose. The property was sold in 1736 under the Act of 7 Geo. I, which allowed Colleges to sell tenements to the trustees of Doctor Radcliffe, and was by them transferred to Brasenose College. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistles of St. John: A Series of Lectures on Christian Ethics These Lectures were delivered to a small Class of Students in our Working Men's College at eight o'clock on Sunday mornings. I have not scrupled to tell this Class that I consider the question whether there is a foundation for human morality - or whether it is dependent upon the opinions and fashions of different ages and countries, to be the question in which, as a body and as individuals, we are most interested; the question which, most affects our studies and our daily lives. And I have told them also where I find the answer to that question. But I have never used the plural pronoun; I have not assumed to speak except in my own person; and I should be very sorry if my colleagues - no one of whom has heard or read any of these Lectures - were held responsible for the sentiments contained in them. Book The Fourfold Gospel Volume 1

Download or read book The Fourfold Gospel Volume 1 written by John DelHousaye and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-08-07 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spirit of Ludolph of Saxony (c. 1295–1378) and Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556), The Fourfold Gospel invites the reader into the mystery of God’s redemption in Jesus Christ. All the parallel passages in the Gospels are glossed together, along with the unique material, using a medieval interpretive approach called the Quadriga or the acronym PaRDeS in Hebrew. Meditating on the literal, canonical, moral, and theological senses of Scripture offers a scaffolding for the spiritual formation of the reader. This volume, in addition to a thorough introduction to the method and the Gospels, focuses on the beginning of the story—the birth, baptism, and temptations of Christ.

Book Saint John s Abbey Church

Download or read book Saint John s Abbey Church written by Victoria M. Young and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s the brethren at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint John the Baptist in Collegeville, Minnesota—the largest Benedictine abbey in the world—decided to expand their campus, including building a new church. From a who’s who of architectural stars—such as Walter Gropius, Richard Neutra, Pietro Belluschi, Barry Byrne, and Eero Saarinen—the Benedictines chose a former member of the Bauhaus, Marcel Breuer. In collaboration with the monks, this untested religious designer produced a work of modern sculptural concrete architecture that reenvisioned what a church could be and set a worldwide standard for midcentury religious design. Saint John’s Abbey Church documents the dialogue of the design process, as Breuer instructed the monks about architecture and they in turn guided him and his associates in the construction of a sacred space in the crucial years of liturgical reform. A reading of letters, drawings, and other archival materials shows how these conversations gave shape to design elements from the church’s floor plan to the liturgical furnishings, art, and incomparable stained glass installed within it. The book offers a rare detailed view of how a patron and architect work together in a successful building campaign—one that, in this case, lasted for two decades and resulted in designs for twelve buildings, ten of which were completed. The post–World War II years were critical in the development of religious and architectural experiences in the United States—experiences that came together in the construction of Saint John’s Abbey and University Church and that find their full expression in Victoria M. Young’s account of the process. Using the liturgy of the mid-twentieth century as a cornerstone for understanding the architecture produced to support it, her book showcases the importance of modernism in the design of sacred space, and of Marcel Breuer’s role in setting the standard.

Download or read book Deepstep Come Shining written by C.D. Wright and published by Copper Canyon Press. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rebellious and fiercely lyrical, the poems of C.D. Wright incorporate elements of disjunction and odd juxtaposition in their exploration of unfolding context. "In my book," she writes, "poetry is a necessity of life. It is a function of poetry to locate those zones inside us that would be free, and declare them so." C.D. Wright was born and raised in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. She has received numerous awards for her work, including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Academy and Institute for Arts and Letters, and the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Foundation. She teaches at Brown University in Rhode Island. "Expertly elliptical phrasings, and an uncounterfeitable, generous feel for real people, bodies and places, have lately made Wright one of America's oddest, best and most appealing poets. Her tenth book consists of a single long poem whose sentences, segments and prose-blocks weave loosely around and about, and grow out of, a road trip through the rural South. Clipped twangs, lyrical ‘goblets of magnolialight,’ and recurrent, mysterious, semi-allegorical figures like ‘the snakeman’ and ‘the boneman’ share space with place names, lexicographies, exhortations and wacky graffiti (‘God is Louise’).… cherish Wright's latest ‘once-and-for-all thing, opaque and revelatory, ceaselessly burning.’"—Publishers Weekly "For me, C.D. Wright's poetry is river gold. 'Love whatever flows.' Her language is on the page half pulled out of earth and rivers—still holding onto the truth of the elements. I love her voice and pitch and the long snaky arms of her language that is willing to hold everything—human and angry and beautiful."—Michael Ondaatje "C.D. Wright is entirely her own poet, a true original."—The Gettysburg Review
