Book excerpt: Ilse’s Fate, a novel takes place in Germany between 1913 and 1945. It incorporates my parents’ experience, their family and friends’ experiences before and during the Nazi Holocaust. The thesis of this fictional tale is that we are all endowed with seeds for good and evil behaviors. Sometimes conditions including insecurity enhance latent bad behavior. For some horrendous conditions evoke good and courageous action. Living a secluded childhood at a manor until age six, until the family lost their estate during World War One, Ilse and her unwelcoming, widowed father move into a small Munich apartment. As a young teenager seeking confidence and acceptance among her peers to survive in a hostile world, she becomes involved in the Nazi movement. Coexisting conflicts between good and evil within her, lead Ilse into heart wrenching experiences that eventually destroy her both emotionally and physically. Throughout the novel she encounters good people as well as uncouth and depraved individuals. The Epilogue documents what transpired to those in Ilse’s Fate who survived the Nazi/Holocaust era. The Afterword details how the experiences of the real people are portrayed through specific characters in the novel. For example, I show how my father’s Report on Dachau, describing his experience as a prisoner at the concentration camp, is portrayed in the story, as well as its impact on his life after Dachau.

Book Handbook of Antennas in Wireless Communications

Download or read book Handbook of Antennas in Wireless Communications written by Lal Chand Godara and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The move toward worldwide wireless communications continues at a remarkable pace, and the antenna element of the technology is crucial to its success. With contributions from more than 30 international experts, the Handbook of Antennas in Wireless Communications brings together all of the latest research and results to provide engineering professionals and students with a one-stop reference on the theory, technologies, and applications for indoor, hand-held, mobile, and satellite systems. Beginning with an introduction to wireless communications systems, it offers an in-depth treatment of propagation prediction and fading channels. It then explores antenna technology with discussion of antenna design methods and the various antennas in current use or development for base stations, hand held devices, satellite communications, and shaping beams. The discussions then move to smart antennas and phased array technology, including details on array theory and beamforming techniques. Space diversity, direction-of-arrival estimation, source tracking, and blind source separation methods are addressed, as are the implementation of smart antennas and the results of field trials of systems using smart antennas implemented. Finally, the hot media topic of the safety of mobile phones receives due attention, including details of how the human body interacts with the electromagnetic fields of these devices. Its logical development and extensive range of diagrams, figures, and photographs make this handbook easy to follow and provide a clear understanding of design techniques and the performance of finished products. Its unique, comprehensive coverage written by top experts in their fields promises to make the Handbook of Antennas in Wireless Communications the standard reference for the field.

Book X Ray Microscopy and Spectromicroscopy

Download or read book X Ray Microscopy and Spectromicroscopy written by Jürgen Thieme and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on presentations to the International Conference of X-Ray Micro scopy and Spectromicroscopy, XRM 96, which took place in Wiirzburg, August 19- 23, 1996. The conference also celebrated the lOOth anniversary of the discovery of X rays by Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen on November 8, 1895, in Wiirzburg. This book contains state-of-the-art reviews and up-to-date progress reports in the field of X-ray microscopy and spectromicroscopy, including related new X-ray optics and X-ray sources. It reflects the lively activities within a relatively new field of science which combines the development of new instruments and methods with their applications to numerous topical scientific questions. The applications range from biological and medical topics, colloid physics, and soil sciences to solid-state physics, material sciences, and surface sciences. Their variety demonstrates the interdisci plinary and cooperative character of this field and the growing demand for micro scopic and spectromicroscopic information on the nanometer scale and under specific sample conditions, for example in wet (natural) surroundings or on a solid surface.

Book All But My Life

Download or read book All But My Life written by Gerda Weissmann Klein and published by Hill and Wang. This book was released on 1995-03-31 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All But My Life is the unforgettable story of Gerda Weissmann Klein's six-year ordeal as a victim of Nazi cruelty. From her comfortable home in Bielitz (present-day Bielsko) in Poland to her miraculous survival and her liberation by American troops--including the man who was to become her husband--in Volary, Czechoslovakia, in 1945, Gerda takes the reader on a terrifying journey. Gerda's serene and idyllic childhood is shattered when Nazis march into Poland on September 3, 1939. Although the Weissmanns were permitted to live for a while in the basement of their home, they were eventually separated and sent to German labor camps. Over the next few years Gerda experienced the slow, inexorable stripping away of "all but her life." By the end of the war she had lost her parents, brother, home, possessions, and community; even the dear friends she made in the labor camps, with whom she had shared so many hardships, were dead. Despite her horrifying experiences, Klein conveys great strength of spirit and faith in humanity. In the darkness of the camps, Gerda and her young friends manage to create a community of friendship and love. Although stripped of the essence of life, they were able to survive the barbarity of their captors. Gerda's beautifully written story gives an invaluable message to everyone. It introduces them to last century's terrible history of devastation and prejudice, yet offers them hope that the effects of hatred can be overcome.
