Book Women s Art of the British Empire

Download or read book Women s Art of the British Empire written by Mary Ellen Snodgrass and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spread of the British Empire around the globe made vast changes in the relationship of peoples to places. Because the logistics of colonization varied, countries passed in and out of the empire, some rapidly and others slower or by degrees. Multiculturalism broadened the world’s ability to read the English language and understand and adopt England’s ethics and morals. Into the early twentieth century, the posting of the British army and navy and the establishment of English-style embassies and police forces in remote colonies freed single travelers, especially women and children, of the fear of violence or kidnap. As a result, girls and women found outlets for creativity by exploring unfamiliar lands. In Women's Art of the British Empire, Mary Ellen Snodgrass provides an overview of multiracial arts and crafts from Great Britain’s Empire. Drawing upon primary sources, this volume encompasses a wide variety of artistic accomplishment, such as: sewing and quilting basketry and weaving songwriting and dancing diaries, memoirs, editorials, and speeches Each entry includes a comprehensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources, as well as further readings on the female artists and their respective crafts. With its informative entries and extensive examinations of artistic talent, Women's Art of the British Empire is a valuable resource for students, scholars, and anyone interested in learning about the history of women and their artistic contributions.

Book excerpt: This highly sympathetic and deeply personal account of Malawi's experience of colonialism has particular poignancy as it is written from the marginal perspective of a mixed-race child in a race-conscious society. The author also has a keen eye for the Scottish dimension in Malawi's story. Historically revealing, politically provocative, and humanly intriguing, this book will be a rewarding read for anyone seeking a better understanding of the people who made Malawi the country it is today.

Book Whitewashing the Movies

Download or read book Whitewashing the Movies written by David C Oh and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whitewashing the Movies addresses the popular practice of excluding Asian actors from playing Asian characters in film. Media activists and critics have denounced contemporary decisions to cast White actors to play Asians and Asian Americans in movies such as Ghost in the Shell and Aloha. The purpose of this book is to apply the concept of “whitewashing” in stories that privilege White identities at the expense of Asian/American stories and characters. To understand whitewashing across various contexts, the book analyzes films produced in Hollywood, Asian American independent production, and US-China co-productions. Through the analysis, the book examines the ways in which whitewashing matters in the project of Whiteness and White racial hegemony. The book contributes to contemporary understanding of mediated representations of race by theorizing whitewashing, contributing to studies of Whiteness in media studies, and producing a counter-imagination of Asian/American representation in Asian-centered stories.

Book A Sustainable Tourism Workforce

Download or read book A Sustainable Tourism Workforce written by Shelagh Mooney and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-15 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together issues of social justice and the neglect of a sustainable orientation to the tourism workforce. This has resulted in an impoverished, unsustainable, and transient workforce that does not meet the aims of UN sustainable goals within the sector or indeed the UNTWO Code of ethics towards its employees. The introductory review and 15 chapters in this volume each make a unique and distinct contribution to knowledge. The opening review presents a critique of current definitions of sustainability in an employment, and specifically in a tourism employment context, acknowledging and critiquing extant literature. It uniquely recognises the themes submitted on the topic of sustainable work in the book, as well as those which comprise the final selection of chapters. These exercises culminate in the presentation of a refreshed conceptualisation of sustainable employment. The chapters were mapped onto a proposed conceptual framework, which recognises the multi-dimensional influences of the evolving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), recent Sustainable Human Resource Management (SHRM) and tourism literature, and fresh contributions to theory. Additionally, the introductory review offers concluding remarks that the authors hope will influence and guide future research endeavours. The book will be invaluable to educators, students and policymakers interested in information and guidance on managing sustainable tourism. Several chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism.
