Book Activating the Art Museum

Download or read book Activating the Art Museum written by Ruth Slavin and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activating the Art Museum: Designing Experiences for the Health Professions, the first book on this subject, offers an argument for collaboration between educators in art museums and healthcare professionals. Through descriptions of teaching practices, the authors bring us into the galleries along with participants to demonstrate the value of art museums in supporting humanism in healthcare for the benefit of both practitioners and their patients. It includes advice on selecting meaningful and provocative works of art; models of responsive workshop design; compelling descriptions of gallery experiences; references to supporting medical literature; and the voices of medical students, physicians, and other health professionals. Chapters address key topics including tolerating ambiguity; empathy; interprofessional teamwork; confronting bias; the power of story; caring for the spirit; wellbeing and mindfulness. This inspiring and practical resource, written by three respected museum educators, is grounded in their experience with multiple individual and institutional partnerships and in designing hundreds of gallery experiences for healthcare trainees and practitioners. This book will be valuable to educators, leaders, and policy-makers in museums and health care. These readers, as well as general audiences with an interest in art and health will be inspired by the potential of art museums to activate our empathetic imaginations and remind us of our shared humanity.

Book International Opportunities in the Arts

Download or read book International Opportunities in the Arts written by Mary Sherman and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of papers derived from talks, presented at TransCultural Exchange’s 2018 International Conference on Opportunities in the Arts. The aim of these talks was to inspire artists to think across disciplines and cultures and to suggest other career models beyond the typical studio to gallery/museum model. Much of this content is unique in that it not only addresses the practical needs of artists but, even more importantly, it does so in the context of today’s global reality. As artists have noted on post-Conference surveys, this information is “the missing link in the art world; the bridge between academic and real-world practice; between a local and international career in the arts.” By making this information available long-after the Conference’s end and to those who could not directly participate in the Conference, many more artists will have access to where to find jobs/residency programs and funding for their work, information on how to put together successful residency applications, how to market their work, and other professional development programming. In addition, they (and interested members of the public) will have access to the Conference talks on what leading artists are doing across disciplines, with new technologies, and in the public sphere.

Book Families in the Roman and Late Antique World

Download or read book Families in the Roman and Late Antique World written by Lena Larsson Loven and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume seeks to explain developments within the structure of the family in antiquity, in particular in the later Roman Empire and late antiquity. Contributions extend the traditional chronological focus on the Roman family to include the transformation of familial structures in the newly formed kingdoms of late antiquity in Europe, thus allowing a greater historical perspective and establishing a new paradigm for the study of the Roman family. Drawing on the latest research by leading scholars in the field the book includes new approaches to the life course and the family in the Byzantine empire, family relationships in the dynasty of Constantine the Great, death, burial and commemoration of newborn children in Roman Italy, and widows and familial networks in Roman Egypt. In short, this volume seeks to establish a new agenda for the understanding of the Roman family and its transformation in late antiquity.

Book Art Rx

Download or read book Art Rx written by Ian Koebner and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: This dissertation explores the feasibility of Art Rx, an innovative public health partnership between the Crocker Art Museum and the Center for Pain Medicine at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) to design a museum-based intervention for individuals with chronic pain. Chronic pain is a major public health problem and is widely acknowledged as a biopsychosocial phenomenon, yet few socially-based interventions for chronic pain exist. Museums may be valuable partners in the effort to relieve pain, yet little guidance exists for incorporating them into public health initiatives. Paper one, The Repurposed Museum is a qualitative study that describes the development of Art Rx and then assesses its feasibility through semi-structured stakeholder interviews with museum personnel and health care providers. Paper two, The Art of Analgesia evaluates Art Rx’s feasibility from the perspective of its end-users, individuals with chronic pain, in a single group quasi-experimental study that employs a mixed methods approach. Methods: Audio recordings of interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed for recurring themes related to the experience and feasibility of Art Rx using the qualitative analysis software package MAXQDA 12. In addition, The Art of Analgesia collected survey data from individuals with chronic pain participating in Art Rx’s docent led museum tours at three time points: pre-tour, post-tour and at three weeks follow up. Change in pain and social disconnection were assessed with paired t-tests. Participants also reported percent pain relief during the tour and program satisfaction in the post-tour survey. Results: Eighteen interviews were conducted for The Repurposed Museum. Healthcare providers and museum staff describe the partnership as innovative, aligned with the missions of their respective organizations and potentially beneficial to individuals with chronic pain. Specialized docent led tours of an art museum were felt to have the potential to mitigate pain by facilitating social connection, alleviating isolation, creating opportunities for learning, and providing a meaningful distraction from pain. The Art of Analgesia (n=54) found that 57% of participants reported pain relief during the tour with an average pain relief of 47% [SD 34.61]. Participants experienced a significant decrease in social disconnection and pain unpleasantness pre- to post-tour (3.65, BCa 95% CI [1.70-5.73], p

Book excerpt: "This book will offer an in-depth account of the work of David Lebe, reproducing many of his important works for the first time in print. Peter Barberie's essay will examine Lebe within the context of other gay and lesbian artists working in the 1970s and 1980s, many of whom turned to photography for its erotic immediacy and confrontational possibilities. The book will present approximately 90-100 images by David Lebe, along with some 20 comparatives by other artists such as Barbara Blondeau, Zoe Leonard, and David Wojnarowicz . Lebe's work will be divided into two main sections: his photographs from the 1970s and 1980s, mostly made in Philadelphia; and his work from the 1990s and beyond"--
