Book How to Watch Soccer

Download or read book How to Watch Soccer written by Ruud Gullit and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An opinionated masterclass in the art and science of “reading” a match from one of professional soccer’s most respected and beloved international figures. "For Americans new to European soccer, terms like 'false striker,' 'double accordion' or 'moving trios' need Mr. Gullit’s expert explications." —Wall Street Journal Ruud Gullit knows better than anyone else that to understand soccer you have to understand strategy. When he started playing soccer, his only “strategy” was to get the ball, outrun everyone else to the other end of the field, and score. At first it served him well, but as he advanced through the sport, he learned that it takes much more than one player's speed to make a winning team. Over the course of his career, he worked his way from the Dutch junior leagues all the way to the legendary AC Milan, eventually retiring from the field to be a trainer, then a manager, and finally a commentator. Each step came with its own lessons, and its own unique perspective on the game. Now, having looked at soccer through every lens possible, Gullit shares his own perspective. Most spectators simply watch the ball, but in How to Watch Soccer, Gullit explains how to watch the whole game. He shows how every part of a match, from formations to corner kicks, all the way down to what the players do to influence the referees, is important. And he uses his own vast experience to illustrate each point, so his lessons are filled with anecdotes from his years on the field and insights from his observations as a manager and commentator. This exhaustive guide will change the way even the most die-hard fan watches the beautiful game.

He has endured every kind of setback in life but has invariably reinvented himself; and his writing is a pure pleasure.' The Sunday Times 'Enough depth and humanity to make your average football autobiography look like a Ladybird book.' Telegraph 'A masterpiece' Brian McNally 'Football memoirs rarely produce great literature but Ferris's The Boy on the Shed is a glistening exception.' Guardian 'Fascinating and stylishly told.' David Walsh, bestselling author of Seven Deadly Sins __________ The Boy on the Shed is a story of love and fate. At 16, Paul Ferris becomes Newcastle United's youngest-ever first-teamer. Like many a tricky winger from Northern Ireland, he is hailed as 'the new George Best'. As a player and later a physio and member of the Magpies' managerial team, Paul's career acquaints him not only with Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish and Bobby Robson, Ruud Gullit, Paul Gascoigne and Alan Shearer but also with injury, insecurity and disappointment. Talented and carefree on the pitch, shy and anxious off it, he earns a tilt at stardom. His first spell at Newcastle turns sour, as does his return as a physio, although obtaining a Masters degree shows him what he could achieve away from football. Written with brutal candour, dark humour and consummate style, The Boy on the Shed is a riveting and moving account of a life less ordinary. __________

Book Four Histories about Early Dutch Football 1910 1920

Download or read book Four Histories about Early Dutch Football 1910 1920 written by Nicholas Piercey and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the purpose of history today, and how can sporting research help us understand the world around us? In this stimulating book, Nicholas Piercey constructs four new histories of early Dutch football, exploring urban change, club members, the media, and the diaries of Cornelis Johannes Karel van Aalst, a stadium director, to propose practical examples of how history can become an important democratic tool for the 21st century.Using early Dutch football as a field for experimental thinking about the past, the four histories offer new insights into the lives, interests and passions of those connected to the sport in the 1910s and the cities they lived in. How did the First World War impact on Dutch football? Were new stadia a form of social control? Is the spread of the beautiful game really a good thing? And why was one of the sport’s most prominent figures more concerned with potatoes? These stories of early Dutch football suggest how vital sport and history can be in shaping our lives, perceptions and actions, and why we need to challenge the influence they have today.

Book Blue Days The Transformation Of Chelsea Under Hoddle Gullit And Vialli

Download or read book Blue Days The Transformation Of Chelsea Under Hoddle Gullit And Vialli written by Chris Wright and published by . This book was released on 2020-12 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blue Days The Transformation Of Chelsea Under Hoddle, Gullit And Vialli Chelsea season ticket holder Chris Wright was 10-years old when Glenn Hoddle took charge as player / manager at Stamford Bridge in June 1993. Hoddle proved to be the catalyst for change at the London club as during the following seven years the Blues were transformed from also-rans to serial silverware winners. In Blue Days, Chris shares his experiences as a young lad growing up supporting Chelsea during what was a truly memorable era. In July 1995, Hoddle persuaded Dutch superstar Ruud Gullit to join his football revolution at the Bridge and young Chris was mesmerised by the midfield maestro's talents. In May 1996, Hoddle left Chelsea to become England manager and Gullit stepped up to replace him as Blues boss whilst continuing to play. Legendary Italian trio Roberto Di Matteo, Gianluca Vialli and Gianfranco Zola joined the 'sexy football' party and Chelsea marched on to Wembley where they won the FA Cup - a fitting tribute to much-loved director Matthew Harding, killed in a helicopter crash in October 1996. Midway through the following season, controversial Chelsea chairman Ken Bates fired Gullit and installed Vialli as player / manager. In spite of the drama, the campaign still brought glory as the Italian steered the Blues to triumphs in the League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup finals. Over the course of the next two years, Chelsea won the Super Cup, played in the Champions League, almost won the Premier League and in May 2000 won the FA Cup again. Vialli's status as a Blues legend was secured, but less than four months later he was sacked by Bates. Chris is able to reflect on what had been a whirlwind few years at the Bridge and in Blue Days his vivid memories shine through. There's no doubt that Roman Abramovich took Chelsea to the next level when he bought the Club in 2003, but as you will read in the pages of this book the seeds for the stellar success that followed were sown by Glenn Hoddle, Ruud Gullit and Gianluca Vialli.

Book Brilliant Orange

Download or read book Brilliant Orange written by David Winner and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-06-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Netherlands has been one of the world's most distinctive and sophisticated football cultures. From the birth of Total Football in the sixties, through two decades of World Cup near misses to the exiles who remade clubs like AC Milan, Barcelona, Arsenal and Chelsea in their own image, the Dutch have often been dazzlingly original and influential. The elements of their style (exquisite skills, adventurous attacking tactics, a unique blend of individual creativity and teamwork, weird patterns of self-destruction) reflect and embody the country's culture and history. This book lays bare the elegant, fractured soul of the Dutch Masters and the culture that spawned them by exploring and analysing its key ideas, institutions, personalities and history in the context of wider Dutch society.
