Horan, the first researcher to be granted access to the long-sealed files of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, was able to show in graphic and unsentimental detail the bloody desperation of the James-Younger gang and the Wild Bunch. Horan reveals the insecure, bitter Jesse James behind the bandit’s mask. His death ended a sixteen-year reign of terror in the Middle Border, but farther to the west Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, and their cohorts soon loomed on the outlaw trail. Their criminal careers and intimate lives are tracked in this revised, enlarged edition of Desperate Men.

Rawson is a agent for Lycan Control, making sure all the afflicted are found, monitored, and kept locked up the night they change. But the Lycans in Hollywood have risen to cultlike proportions, and Rawson’s job is getting tougher. One night a woman changes right in front of Rawson. And it’s not a full moon. Someone deep in the bowels of Hollywood has managed to rewrite the rules of the werewolves’ existence. Battling a rising tide of Lycan-rights activists and a growing population of those who choose to become Lycan, Rawson must carve a path to the top of the Lycan food chain before all hell breaks loose.

  • Author : Frances McElrath
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2015-09-01

Download or read book The Rustler written by Frances McElrath and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in the spring of 1902, the same year as The Virginian, Frances McElrath's novel The Rustler enjoyed only brief success before fading from public memory. While The Virginian has indisputably served as the model for the genre of the Western, The Rustler remains virtually unknown. Although both novels were inspired by the Johnson County massacre, The Rustler is an account sympathetic to the perspective of the small cattleman, while The Virginian takes the part of the large cattle operations. Both novels also address, with differing conclusions, the clash between the independent Western man and the genteel Eastern woman. In this story of the stoic, competent, and fiercely independent cowboy Jim and his ill-fated love for the beautiful Hazel Clifford, McElrath offers an alternative view of the West and the standard marriage plot. In contrast to The Virginian, The Rustler points to the vulnerability of the cowboy ethos and a different sort of redemption for the frivolous Eastern woman. The Rustler is also a significant example of the connection between popular and literary traditions whereby sentimentalism, the Western, and a feminist perspective converge in surprising and fascinating ways.

Book excerpt: As Chief Sitting Bull stepped up on the porch, he turned to face the crowd. "My friends," he began by sweeping his right arm around, encompassing all in attendance, "I am called Sitting Bull, war chief of the Lakota Sioux, but it was not always so. My mother and father named me at birth Jumping Badger. My name was changed to Sitting Bull after my coming-of-age vision. My ancestors and I grew up in the sacred Black Hills of Dakota, where we lived happily for many thousands of years. And then the white eyes came. We lived by our own tribal law and the law of the great spirit which is true, and just then the Great White Father in Washington said he wanted all of our land for themselves, and the yellow iron found on it, then sending Yellow Hair Custer to our land to find the yellow iron, breaking our treaties, which we had signed many times but was broken each time by the white man, not us. They told us, upon threat of war and death, to give up our sacred land and go live on the white man's reservation. They said we must send our children to white man's school, learn the white man's ways, forget the ways of our fathers and grandfathers, plow the Mother Earth, they wanted our weapons turned over to the blue coats, these things we could not do. As any man worth his small ration of salt would do, even as the white eyes have done in their civil war, we fought for our freedom."
