Book excerpt: This book provides an accessible introduction to the linguistic structure of Russian, including its history, dialects and sociolinguistics, as well as the central issues of phonology, morphology, syntax and word formation/lexicology. It particularly emphasises the special linguistic features of Russian which are not shared with English and other non-Slavic languages. For intermediate/advanced students of Russian, this will help to reinforce their understanding of how all levels of Russian function. Students and scholars of linguistics will find it a useful starting point for comparative work involving the structure of Russian and the Slavic languages, or issues such as standardisation, multilingualism, and the fate of former colonial languages. Each chapter begins with an introduction to the basic theoretical concepts of the area covered, presenting the linguistic facts and relationships in an easily accessible form. It will also serve as a learning aid to Cyrillic, with all examples transliterated.

Download or read book Orthodox Russia in Crisis written by Isaiah Gruber and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pivotal period in Russian history, the Time of Troubles in the early seventeenth century has taken on new resonance in the country's post-Soviet search for new national narratives. The historical role of the Orthodox Church has emerged as a key theme in contemporary remembrances of this time—but what precisely was that role? The first comprehensive study of the Church during the Troubles, Orthodox Russia in Crisis reconstructs this tumultuous time, offering new interpretations of familiar episodes while delving deep into the archives to uncover a much fuller picture of the era. Analyzing these sources, Isaiah Gruber argues that the business activity of monasteries played a significant role in the origins and course of the Troubles and that frequent changes in power forced Church ideologues to innovate politically, for example inventing new justifications for power to be granted to the people and to royal women. These new ideas, Gruber contends, ultimately helped bring about a new age in Russian spiritual life and a crystallization of the national mentality.

Book Issues in Cognitive Linguistics

Download or read book Issues in Cognitive Linguistics written by Leon de Stadler and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cognitive linguistics subsumes diverse theoretical approaches sharing a compatible outlook: namely that language reflects the interaction of social, cultural, psychological, communicative, and functional considerations that can be understood only in the context of cognitive development and processing. The editors have organized 27 papers presented at the Third International Linguistics Conference held in the summer of 1993 in Louvain, Belgium, into six somewhat overlapping groupings off theoretical issues concerning the bridges between generative and cognitive linguistics; lexical semantics and morphology (e.g. Langacker semantics for select Coeur d'Alene prefixes); metaphor (one title is "Why metaphor matters: or linguistics meets the geopolitics of law"); syntax and semantics (focusing on Samoan, Spanish, and Swedish); pragmatics (nominal vs. temporal interpretation); and Holmqvist on computational linguistics.

Download or read book Roots of Hate written by William Brustein and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-10-13 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William I. Brustein offers the first truly systematic comparative and empirical examination of anti-Semitism within Europe before the Holocaust. Brustein proposes that European anti-Semitism flowed from religious, racial, economic, and political roots, which became enflamed by economic distress, rising Jewish immigration, and socialist success. To support his arguments, Brustein draws upon a careful and extensive examination of the annual volumes of the American Jewish Year Books and more than 40 years of newspaper reportage from Europe's major dailies. The findings of this informative book offer a fresh perspective on the roots of society's longest hatred.

Book Russian Social Science Reader

Download or read book Russian Social Science Reader written by E. L. Johnson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russian Social Science Reader is one of a series designed for non-linguists who need knowledge of the Russian language in order to pursue their interests in fields other than language or literature. The purpose of this book is to provide real assistance to the trained social scientist who, having already mastered his own discipline, is willing to devote a little time to mastering the Russian language for the purpose of reading specialist material in his own field. The book begins with discussions of Russian syntax and word formation, and Russian political, economic, and legal terminologies. Separate chapters then provide extracts from the Constitution of the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic and Constitution of the USSR in Russian with English translations; and extracts dealing with wide range of topics that illustrate a range of linguistic usage. Topics covered include housing and education, employment of the disabled, industrialization, collectivization of agriculture, and the Soviet economic and legal systems.
