The original volume was the first comprehensive survey published on all the Russian Air Forces and was the result of Yefim Gordon's unrivalled access to information on Russian air forces. Since the first edition was published Russia has undergone a complete restructuring of its air forces. The previous edition of Russian Air Power described the Russian Air Force's post-Soviet organisation, order of battle and, to a certain extent, the types in Russian Air Force service. In the course of the 20 years that have had elapsed since the demise of the Soviet Union the Russian Air Force and Russian Naval Aviation have had repeatedly been reformed; still, the Russian government was not happy with the results. The Russian President voiced his dissatisfaction with the Air Force's performance especially strongly after the August 2008 operation in the Caucasus whose aim was to 'compel Georgia to peace'. The many reforms of the Russian aircraft industry, too, have failed to yield the desired results. Therefore, the Russian political leaders and military top brass took the decision in 2009 to launch yet another reform of the Russian Armed Forces, including the Air Force. The new Air Force organisation is to improve the control of first-line units by eliminating superfluous and inefficient links in the chain of command. In 2009 the customary air armies, air divisions and air regiments were replaced by aviation bases, each of which comprises two or three squadrons operating a single type or several types of aircraft. In the course of reorganisation a sizeable number of airbases (military airfields) were transferred to the Air Force reserve and are presently unoccupied. Many air regiments were disbanded, their personnel and aircraft being transferred to other aviation bases. Each aviation base has its unique number and is a direct reporting unit. Moreover, in late 2008 the Russian Air Force started fielding new aircraft and helicopter types. The long-awaited maiden flight of the Sukhoi T-50 (alias PAK FA) – Russia's fifth-generation fighter – took place in late January 2010. The Russian Air Force has a lot riding on this aircraft; some defence analysts believe that the T-50 outperforms the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor in several parameters. The Russian Navy has ordered the new MiG-29K/MiG-29KUB shipboard fighter to complement the Su-33; for the Russian Air Force's strategic arm, funding has been allocated for further work on the PAK DA, a new bomber that is to be far superior to both the Russian Tu-160 and the American B-2. Following a re structuring to Russian's air forces, Yefim Gordon and Dmitriy Komissarov provide readers with a fully revised and updated new edition of the popular Russian Air Power.The title will include any updates made since the publication of the first edition and provide a true picture of Russian Air Power and forces today. Book excerpt: When the Mikoyan Gerevich MiG-15 first appeared in combat against the Western powers during the Korean War it caused consternation amongst its opposition. Its performance far outstripped any jet fighter aircraft produced by the West at the time and its duels with the US F86 Sabre have entered into aviation legend. The success of the MiG-15 was such that it went on to become the most widely produced jet fighter aircraft in history, and although figures vary it is believed over 12,000 were built plus another 6,000 under licence. The protoype of the distinctive fighter, built by the Mikoyan design bureau, with its high swept wing and tailplane and nose intake first flew in 1947, and was first deployed in the Korean War at the start of the 1950s. Although it suffered from handling problems when involved in dogfights with the F86, and a number were shot down, it had been built primarily with the role of interceptor in mind and was highly effective against the US heavy bombers. The MiG-15 was produced in a number of variants, both in single seat and two-seat versions and remained in service as a trainer aircraft for Warsaw Pact countries into the 1970s. Its improved successors, the MiG-17 and MiG-19 became the standard Soviet jet fighters of the early Cold War, including the Vietnam War. The MiG-15 was also produced in Czechoslovakia, Poland and China and aircraft were exported throughout the world. Its rugged build has ensured that a number survive in flying condition today. Book excerpt: During the Second World War, the Soviet Union’s Petlyakov Pe-2 _Peshka_ dive-bomber was unique in that it was as fast as most fighter aircraft. This was in a period when it was considered by the RAF that it was impossible for monoplane aircraft to conduct vertical bombing with any degree of success. During the war the Pe-2 was the principal dive- and light-bomber of Russia’s air power across the vast Eastern Front and it continued in service until the early 1950s with the air forces of the Warsaw Pact countries and Yugoslavia. Conceived by a team of top aircraft designers whom Stalin had incarcerated in a prison camp on trumped-up political charges, the Pe-2 had originally been designed as a high-altitude twin-engine fighter plane, but, due to the outstanding success of the German Stukas in the Blitzkrieg, its role was quickly changed to that of a fast dive-bomber. The Pe-2 arrived in service around the time of the German attack on its hitherto ally. Although only a handful had reached front line units by the start of Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, the Pe-2 soon became the main dive-bomber in both the Soviet VVS and Naval service. Mass production, by factories hastily moved back beyond the front, meant that numbers increased rapidly, and more than 11,000 of the type, including many variants, were built up to 1945. The Peshka became the mainstay of the Soviet counteroffensive that ultimately resulted in the fall of Berlin. Pe-2s also led the way in the brief but annihilating Manchurian campaign against Japan in the closing days of the war in 1945. Using official sources, including the official Pe-2 handbook, and numerous color and black-and-white photographs made available to the author from both official and private sources and collections, this book is the definitive record of the Pe-2 - the dive-bomber supreme!

A separate chapter deals with the various aviation assets that would make up the air groups of the Moskva and Kiev Class's - helicopter and vertical/short take-off and landing fixed wing. All technical information regarding the warships, systems and weapons has been provided by the respective design houses, developers and builder/manufacturers, as has much of photograph and graphic material used throughout the volume, which is also supported by photograph and graphic material from third party sources such as the Defence and intelligence service Departments of various NATO nations.

This meant new bombers had to be developed for dealing strikes at the potential adversaries' military and political centers. Having gained access to German jet aircraft technology and the men behind it in 1945, the Soviet Union put them to good use when developing its own jet bombers.The first jet bomber to fly in the USSR was the Junkers EF131. Built in 1946, it was based on the unconventional forward-swept wing Ju 287 V2, which had been captured in incomplete form. This was followed by the EF140 (a similar FSW design differing in powerplant) and the equally unusual T-tailed, bicycle-gear 'aircraft 150' developed by Brunolf Baade which was ultimately rejected in favor of the Tupolev Tu-16.The first wholly indigenous Soviet jet bomber came from the Ilyushin design bureau; it was the four-engined IL-22 of 1947. Other experimental Ilyushin bombers - the IL-30, IL-46 and IL-54 which lost out to competing designs - are described in this book, as are the Tupolev 'aircraft 77', 'aircraft 82' and the 'aircraft 72/73/78' series which culminated in the Tu-14 twinjet bomber built on a small scale, mainly for the Soviet Navy.
