The failure of Gorbachev's Asian initiatives has had dramatic consequences, by the late 1980s, the Soviet Union was in full retreat from Asia, and since the Soviet collapse, Russia has been left on the sidelines of the "Pacific century." In this exceptionally wide-ranging and deeply researched book, Sergey Radchenko offers an illuminating account of the end of the Cold War in the East, tracing the death of Soviet ambitions in Asia. Radchenko shows that Gorbachev began with big gestures, of which the most important was his initiative in Vladivostok in July 1986, the opening salvo of the Soviet charm offensive in Asia Pacific. The problem, Radchenko points out, was that no one in Asia bought into Gorbachev's vision. If the Soviets had realized earlier that they needed Asia more than Asia needed them, they might have played a much more important role there. Instead, China was largely misunderstood, early gains in India were squandered, Japan was ignored or condescended to, and the Korean scenario played out in ways most unfavorable to Russia. Radchenko captures all of this in his compelling narrative, shedding important new light on many key players, including Gorbachev, Deng Xiaoping, Margaret Thatcher, Boris Yeltsin, and George H. W. Bush, among others. Spegal'skii and the Reconstruction of Pskov, is the first comprehensive, critical biography in any language of this outstanding man, a native of one of Russia's oldest and most beautiful cities, Pskov. It is the story of one man's love and passion for Pskov's architectural and cultural heritage and the struggles he endured to try and save that heritage. Spegal'skii (1909-69) was a man of enormous gifts and wide-ranging interests, stonemason, architect-restorer, scholar, steeplejack, and gifted artist who poured his love for Pskov into art intended to educate and inspire his fellow citizens. He lived in a time of great political and cultural turmoil in Russia and was tempered by the struggles he endured early in his life. Orphaned as a teenager after his father died in WWI and his mother moved away, he raised himself in an abandoned 17th-century house, spending his days drawing the architectural monuments which dotted the ancient city and working as an apprentice stonemason. He moved to Leningrad and became an architect, and returned to begin resurrecting his city's ancient monuments. His work was cut short by WWII, during which he barely survived the siege of Leningrad, camouflaging and preserving the city's damaged architecture. He returned to Pskov after the war, to a city devastated by Nazi brutality, living under extremely severe conditions and supported in his work by his wife, the architect Ol'ga K. Arshakuni. As the second half of the title indicates, the book chronicles his efforts to preserve architectural monuments in post-war Pskov in 1944-47, detailing his conservation and restoration work, his revolutionary project for architectural reserves and the foundation of the Pskov Restoration Workshop. However, he was eventually driven from his native city by forces opposed to his plans and ideas, the "e;Outcast Visionary"e;, an outsider who battled the reconstruction projects undertaken in Pskov by a government hostile to its architectural legacy. The book addresses in detail such topics as his controversial theories on the evolution and characteristics of Pskov stone church and house architecture, his extensive legacy of scholarly publications and his fine, graphic and applied art. The body of this book consists of an index of all significant words in Yeats, each word listed in the line or lines in which it occurs. The concordance is based on the variorum text of Yeats, edited by Alspach and Allt, and includes all variants that occur in printed versions of Yeats's poems.

In We Shall Be Masters, Chris Miller explores why, arguing that Russia’s ambitions have repeatedly outstripped its capacity. With the core of the nation concentrated thousands of miles away in the European borderlands, Russia’s would-be pioneers have always struggled to project power into Asia and to maintain public and elite interest in their far-flung pursuits. Even when the wider population professed faith in Asia’s promise, few Russians were willing to pay the steep price. Among leaders, too, dreams of empire have always been tempered by fears of cost. Most of Russia’s pivots to Asia have therefore been halfhearted and fleeting. Today the Kremlin talks up the importance of “strategic partnership” with Xi Jinping’s China, and Vladimir Putin’s government is at pains to emphasize Russian activities across Eurasia. But while distance is covered with relative ease in the age of air travel and digital communication, the East remains far off in the ways that matter most. Miller finds that Russia’s Asian dreams are still restrained by the country’s firm rooting in Europe.
