Book Russia s Uncertain Economic Future

Download or read book Russia s Uncertain Economic Future written by John P. Hardt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to this volume analyze the present state of the Russian economy and its future prospects - which now seem brighter than at any previous time in the country's history. The Russian economy is now showing positive GDP growth and a positive balance of payments, portending a trend of sustained growth. The record of the Putin presidency with respect to the establishment of market-friendly legal and administrative environments is substantially positive. On the other side of the ledger, the contributors identify the persistence of monopolies in energy, transportation, and agriculture; distortions resulting from corruption, infrastructural inadequacies, and the maldistribution of political power and decision-making authority; demographic decline and the erosion of human capital as manifested in the health, education, and welfare of the population. Russia's successful development as a democratic society with a market economy is of great importance to its neighbors and to the global economy, and specifically to the United States, which is why the U.S. Congress commissioned these studies by expert analysts. This edition includes a comprehensive subject index, making the volume user-friendly.

Book excerpt: Over the last hundred years, Russia has undergone a succession of failed projects of state construction - from Tzarist modernisation to Soviet state socialism to liberal democratic market capitalism. This new book introduces these vastly different projects and explains their failure in order to illuminate the common problems of balancing social and economic transformation with political stability that Russia's rulers have faced during the twentieth century. Russia: A State of Uncertainty traces Russia's complex historical development in the last century, as well as its recent political troubles and economic misfortunes, and its place in the contemporary international system. Providing up-to-date information on Russian political developments, including the elections of 1999 and 2000, Robinson assesses the chances of future projects of political and economic reconstruction. Written in a clear and accessible way, this book will be an invaluable text for students learning about Russia for the first time, as well as anyone interested in the state and history of Russia.

Book excerpt: A Foreign Affairs Best Book of the Year on Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Republics The Russian oil industry—which vies with Saudi Arabia as the world’s largest producer and exporter of oil, providing nearly 12 percent of the global supply—is facing mounting problems that could send shock waves through the Russian economy and worldwide. Wheel of Fortune provides an authoritative account of this vital industry from the last years of communism to its uncertain future. Tracking the interdependence among Russia’s oil industry, politics, and economy, Thane Gustafson shows how the stakes extend beyond international energy security to include the potential threat of a destabilized Russia. “Few have studied the Russian oil and gas industry longer or with a broader political perspective than Gustafson. The result is this superb book, which is not merely a fascinating, subtle history of the industry since the Soviet Union’s collapse but also the single most revealing work on Russian politics and economics published in the last several years.” —Robert Legvold, Foreign Affairs “The history of Russia’s oil industry since the collapse of communism is the history of the country itself. There can be few better guides to this terrain than Thane Gustafson.” —Neil Buckley, Financial Times

Book Prospects for Russia s Economic Future

Download or read book Prospects for Russia s Economic Future written by Michael Schearer and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, one of the most pressing and ever-present problems facing Russia has been that of its economy. Despite billions upon billions of dollars of foreign and international aid, Russia's economy continues to sink. The already-bad situation took a turn for the worse in August 1998 when a serious financial crisis gripped Russia. The result was that the government defaulted on its domestic debt and caused a major devaluation of the ruble. The Russian government would have the international community believe that more World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) loans to prop up the Russian economy and maintain the value of the ruble would be the first step to economic recovery. Through July, the IMF had already loaned Russia over $18 billion. And on July 13, it approved another $22.6 billion to bail out Russia's failing economy. The goal of this paper is three-fold: first, to understand the causes of Russia's economic failure; second, to examine the current state of affairs; and finally, to proffer a realistic set of policy options upon which Russia's economy can be rebuilt. Will more international loans save the Russian economy? Or, as more people are beginning to suggest, is there another way?
