Book Russia s Agony Classic Reprint

Download or read book Russia s Agony Classic Reprint written by Robert Wilton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia's Agony Russia has to voice her sentiment otherwise. The time for peaceful expression will come when the hostile garrison of Bolshevism and its German supporters have been driven out. What form of government mayr then be adopted by the free decision of the Russian people concerns only them selves. Three centuries ago they elected a Tsar of the Romanovs. The elements of a true democracy were embodied in the Zemsky Sobor, or Assembly of the Land. But Russia then was dominated by Byzantine tradition, and later by Ger man influence. The voice of the people was dulled by these nu-russian forces. Freed of their deadening power, Russia will assert the principles of justice and true democracy that are inherent to the Russian character. Her troubles came not from the Monarchy, but from the alien influences that the Monarchy imbibed. The German incubus will have been removed ere Russia can revive. Of that revival I perceive sure and certain promise. I believe that the Russian people were destined to play an exalted part in the advancement of mankind, and that the day will soon dawn when the peoples of the world will duly appreciate the sacrifices that the Russians have endured, not less than the services that they render to the common cause of humanity. It 13 with this confidence that I am leaving the hospitable shores of America to rejoin my Russian com rades in the great adventure of this unparalleled war - the restoration of Russia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Victory in Defeat: The Agony of Warsaw and the Russian Retreat This little volume has been written with the intention of presenting as far as possible at this time, and within the information avail able to the writer, the Russian side of the great campaign which ended in the capture of War saw by the Germans, and was followed by the great Russian retreat. There are many assets in war as there are in peace, and the greatest among these is character. Efficiency, prepa ration, and science have their innings at the beginning of a conflict, but the one enduring asset which a nation has is the character of its people. If time be given for this to develop, then the end is certain. The great crisis in Russia was during that period when the psy chology of the nation was crystallizing, and when this had taken place the danger to Russia was largely passed. Certainly I would in no way minimize the strength, fortitude, and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia's Agony To my readers: In the following pages I speak of Russian affairs with the experience of an observer who has lived from early boyhood among the Russian people and has shared with them their joys and sorrows. "Russia's Agony" was written in compliance with a personal call and with the discharge of a public duty; it combines a human document with a historical treatise. Men, events and conditions have, I believe, been dealt with in a spirit of fairness, for although the original edition of this book was begun and completed a year ago, the storm and stress of later developments call for no substantial changes. That a comprehensive account of Russia from the inside was in demand has been shown by the rapid exhaustion of several impressions of this work, and indicated by the publication of an American edition. Serious study of Russian affairs is more than ever important, and even necessary, for every thinking man and woman, not only because of the ignorance that prevails on the subject - a great handicap to us in the War - but because of the great social drama that has been staged in that country. Since her collapse, Russia has become the focus of social unrest throughout the world. Bolshevism - a foe more deadly to our civilization than German Militarism - cannot be effectively combated unless we understand the circumstances of its origin and working, indissolubly connected with the so-called Russian Revolution - a Revolution that has still to justify its name. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Russia Russia is just at present on the eve of the most momentous period of its history. Within the last year we have already witnessed the prologue of the great drama which is about to be played. TO those who are not intimately acquainted with Russia and her people, this prologue must have appeared incoherent and almost impossible to under stand, for the best of reasons, that the actors did not know themselves the meaning of the parts which they were acting. It was a case of irresponsible followers rushing behind incoherent leaders. The truth is that the Russians had suddenly awakened out Of the most ghastly nightmare, and, still dazed and only half awake, the nightmare still vivid in their minds, they had but one thought - to rush madly headlong, in order to escape from its horrors. They rushed about, anywhere, anyhow, not caring where they went so long as they ran. In the same way does a patient, suffering from cardiac distress, rush about the room to try and escape from the agony which he endures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Years at the Russian Court The English daily papers described the Emperor and his family as having fled in their yacht, at a time when the yacht was deeply embedded in ice outside Kronstadt. I could multiply such stories ad lib., but merely wish to draw attention to the fact that so much that is written regarding Russia and the Imperial family is absolutely untrue, so little is really known about the Court life, that I am emboldened to offer my slight sketches of life in the Palaces. It would be very easy for me to pile on the agony, to represent the Emperor as a much ridden man; to picture plots and counter plots; to speak of hairbreadth escapes from death; of hidden bombs; of life made horrible by fears but no such things have occurred in my six years at the Russian Court, and I am a truthful person, and have not started forth to write fiction, but plain, unvarnished truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marooned in Moscow: The Story of an American Woman Imprisoned in Russia In the early part of February, 1920, I crossed into Russia through the Polish Front, as correspondent of the Baltimore Sun and the Associated Press, intending to remain for six weeks. I stayed for eighteen months, ten of which were spent in prison. This was due to the manner in which I entered the country, and my actions While there, which I Shall describe fully in the following pages telling what happened to me as well as what I heard and saw in Russia. My treatment while in prison was no different from that accorded any other pris oners, native or foreign, and I can honestly say that I have come through it all with absolutely no personal bitterness and with what I believe to be a purely impartial View of conditions in the Soviet Republic. My account Of my experiences is written entirely from memory, as I was permitted to take no notes out of the country when I was released on July 28, upon the acceptance by the Soviet government Of the terms of the American Relief Association for famine relief in Russia, which was made conditional on the release of all American prisoners. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Russian Front Early every line in this book has been written to the accompaniment of guns and under conditions that made writing very difficult. There are many things I would have liked to write, but which I am not permitted to tell at present. I have had to refrain from men tioning certain places, names of certain important men, and certain dates. I have also had to curb a desire to criticize. Several of my letters to friends in England are included here. Written, as they were, immediately after the events they describe, they show, I think, my emotions as no ordinary chapters could. Book The Truth About Port Arthur Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Truth About Port Arthur Classic Reprint written by E. K. Nojine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth About Port Arthur The siege of Port Arthur was the event of the late war in the Far East which most attracted the attention and interest of the rest of the world. There were other military operations, it is true, of equal if not of greater importance to the ultimate issue of the struggle; but, owing to their complexity, their slowness, and the absence of definite advance information, their progress and purport were not easily grasped by any save military students. The case of Port Arthur was different. The long drawn-out agony of the siege was continued before the eyes of the world for many months, *6 and, while the imagination was touched by its romantic side, the point at issue was at once apparent. Even so, there was much mystery about the conduct of the defence and the eventual fall of the Fortress; for, owing to its remote position and almost complete isola tion by the enemy, the available information almost entirely consisted of that supplied by correspondents with the Japanese, and was, therefore, information from the outside, and more or less a history of results alone. In 1907, or between two and three years after the culmina tion of the siege, the inevitable disclosures - the aftermath of defeat - which sometimes help to an appreciation of causes began to be made in Russia. Book excerpt: The classic account of the final offensive against Hitler’s Third Reich. The Battle for Berlin was the culminating struggle of World War II in the European theater, the last offensive against Hitler’s Third Reich, which devastated one of Europe’s historic capitals and marked the final defeat of Nazi Germany. It was also one of the war’s bloodiest and most pivotal battles, whose outcome would shape international politics for decades to come. The Last Battle is Cornelius Ryan’s compelling account of this final battle, a story of brutal extremes, of stunning military triumph alongside the stark conditions that the civilians of Berlin experienced in the face of the Allied assault. As always, Ryan delves beneath the military and political forces that were dictating events to explore the more immediate imperatives of survival, where, as the author describes it, “to eat had become more important than to love, to burrow more dignified than to fight, to exist more militarily correct than to win.” The Last Battle is the story of ordinary people, both soldiers and civilians, caught up in the despair, frustration, and terror of defeat. It is history at its best, a masterful illumination of the effects of war on the lives of individuals, and one of the enduring works on World War II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The metaphor of the nomad may at first seem surprising for Russia given its history of serfdom, travel restrictions, and strict social hierarchy. But as the imperial center struggled to tame a vast territory with ever-expanding borders, ideas of mobility, motion, travel, wandering, and homelessness came to constitute important elements in the discourse about national identity. For Russians of the nineteenth century national identity was anything but stable. This rootlessness is at the core of A Nation Astray. Here, Ingrid Anne Kleespies traces the image of the nomad and its relationship to Russian national identity through the debates and discussion of literary works by seminal writers like Karamzin, Pushkin, Chaadaev, Goncharov, and Dostoevsky. Appealing to students of Russian Romanticism, nationhood, and identity, as well as general readers interested in exile and displacement as elements of the human condition, this interdisciplinary work illuminates the historical and philosophical underpinnings of a basic aspect of Russian self-determination: the nomadic constitution of the Russian nation.
