Book excerpt: National Geographic s political map of Russia and the independent states of the former Soviet Union is one of the most authoritative maps of region. This "Classic" style wall map features a bright color palette with blue oceans and the country s terrain detailed in stunning shaded relief that has been a hallmark of National Geographic maps for over 75 years. Thousands of place names, accurate political boundaries, bodies of water, and major infrastructure networks such as roadways, airports, canals, oil pipelines, and railroads are detailed. Coastal bathymetry is shown with depth curves and soundings, and the boundaries of Northern Sea shipping routes are marked as well. Coverage also includes Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, and Japan, as well as portions of Germany, Poland, Iran, Pakistan, and China. The map is encapsulated in heavy-duty 1.6 mil laminate which makes the paper much more durable and resistant to the swelling and shrinking caused by changes in humidity. Laminated maps can be framed without the need for glass, so the fames can be much lighter and less expensive. "Map Scale = 1:12,617,000Sheet Size = 30.25" x 23.5"""

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “utterly fascinating” untold story of Soviet Russia’s global military mapping program—featuring many of the surprising maps that resulted (Marina Lewycka, author of A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian). From 1950 to 1990, the Soviet Army conducted a global topographic mapping program, creating large-scale maps for much of the world that included a diversity of detail that would have supported a full range of military planning. For big cities like New York, Washington, D.C., and London to towns like Pontiac, MI, and Galveston, TX, the Soviets gathered enough information to create street-level maps. The information on these maps ranged from the locations of factories and ports to building heights, road widths, and bridge capacities. Some of the detail suggests early satellite technology, while other specifics, like detailed depictions of depths and channels around rivers and harbors, could only have been gained by Soviet spies on the ground. The Red Atlas includes over 350 extracts from these incredible Cold War maps, exploring their provenance and cartographic techniques as well as what they can tell us about their makers and the Soviet initiatives that were going on all around us.

Book Lunar and Planetary Cartography in Russia

Download or read book Lunar and Planetary Cartography in Russia written by Vladislav Shevchenko and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to document in depth the history of lunar and planetary cartography in Russia. The first map of the far side of the Moon was made with the participation of Lomonosov Moscow University (Sternberg Astronomical Institute, MSU) in 1960. The developed mapping technologies were then used in preparing the “Complete Map of the Moon” in 1967 as well as other maps and globes. Over the years, various maps of Mars have emerged from the special course “Mapping of extraterrestrial objects” in the MSU Geography Department, including the hypsometric map of Mars at a scale of 1:26,000,000, compiled by J.A. Ilyukhina and published in 2004 in an edition of 5,000 copies. A more detailed version of this map has since been produced with a new hypsometric scale. In addition, maps of the northern and southern hemispheres of Mars have been compiled for the hypsometric globe of Mars. Relief maps of Venus were made in 2008, 2010, and 2011, and hypsometric maps of Phobos and Deimos at a scale of 1:60,000 were published in 2011. History of Lunar and Planetary Cartography in Russia provides detailed information on the compilation of this diverse range of maps and will be of interest to all lunar and planetary cartographers.

Book The First English Explorer

Download or read book The First English Explorer written by Kit Mayers and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first real explorer, for the English, was Anthony Jenkinson. He sailed to Russia and set out into the unknown to discover an overland route, right across Asia. His detailed reports and his map were a revelation for the Tudors. In 1557 Anthony Jenkinson was sent by the merchants of London to try to find an overland route right across Asia to Cathay and the riches of the Orient, setting off a year before Queen Elizabeth I came to the throne. His expedition to the east took place some twenty nine years earlier than the first English expedition to the west. As well as surviving storms, Jenkinson was faced with thieving, illness and several attacks by bandits, before eventually, by sheer persistence, reaching Bokhara, which is now in Uzbekistan. He had completed two thirds of the journey and had reached the ‘Silk Road’ that led to Cambaluc (Beijing), before finding that he could go no further because the route ahead was closed by continuous wars. In later expeditions, he travelled to Persia where he nearly had his head cut off and he also went to Moscow where he managed some extremely tense negotiations with Tsar Ivan the Terrible on behalf of the Muscovy Company. His reports back to the Company in London give us a great insight into what Russia was like at the time, and Tartary and Persia. ‘This book is a lively and carefully researched study of Anthony Jenkinson,’ – Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Bt, OBE ‘This important book fills an undoubted gap in the history of English travellers in the sixteenth century,’ – Professor David Loades, FSA, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Wales The First English Explorer will appeal to fans of history, particularly those with a strong interest in explorers and eastern travel.
