Book The Re Shaping of the Far East Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Re-Shaping of the Far East, Vol. 1 The kind reception accorded by both the English and American Press and public to a first book dealing exhaustively with the Russians in Manchuria, and exposing the true position of the Northern Colossus in the coveted Chinese provinces, has made me suppose that a second work treating the whole Far East in the same intimate manner may likewise do something towards correcting the many erroneous impressions which are fast growing up as one of the immediate results of the war. This second volume is, therefore, in many respects a sequel to the first, and deals mainly with the Northern Far East - that is, the territories lying north of the Yangtsze. The whole story of the past decade in China, Manchuria, Korea, and Japan has been a most curious one, and the manner in which all these countries have become entangled with one another and with rival European nations is probably without parallel in the world's history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American-Russian Rivalry in the Far East: A Study in Diplomacy and Power Politics, 1895-1914 Wiih American expansion Eastward in the last decade of the nineteenth century, the tradition of friendship between the United States and Russia, which had existed for almost. A hundred years, gave way to a period of rivalry. This rivalry in the Far East, the subject of the present study, was, in the main, a result of economic competition in Manchuria which began as early as 1895. Following the Boxer upheaval of 1900, relations between the two powers became critical, and reached a climax in the russo-japanese War of 1904 - 5. They continued in a state of tension during the taft-knox administration until President Wilson in 1913 withdrew governmental support from the six-power consortium. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia in the Far East As this book goes to press, the Washington Conference on the Limitation of Armament is still in session, with the question of Siberia on that part of the agenda, which the Conference has not as jet reached. The book, therefore, does not contain the actual decisions of the Conference on the Russian question. It appears likely that these decisions will be entirely within the scope of the American position with regard to the "moral trusteeship" over Russia's national interests, and there is no doubt that the deliberations at the Conference will push to the fore many aspects of the Russian situation in the Far East. It is hoped, therefore, that this book will furnish a background for a clearer understanding of this important situation. Materials on the various Russian phases of the Far Eastern question are not easily available in this country, and their interpretation is most difficult. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia and Japan: And a Complete History of the War in the Far East During the American Civil War, journalistic enter prise set the pace for the world, as it has continued to do since, and here we find the first example of serious restraint against that absolute freedom in the publication of news which followed the establishment of the doctrine of the liberty Of the press towards the close of the eighteenth century. It was necessary for the Federal Government to suppress a number of Northern newspapers for alleged seditious utter auces, and correspondents in the field were repeatedly refused permission to accompany forces, while others had privileges already acquired taken from them. At certain stages Of the war orders were issued to hang all correspondents who appeared on the field, a fact which shows that the calling 18 not without its disadvantages. However, public opinion in the long run asserted its right to have these unofficial representatives of the masses in the field, and the daily history of the great conflict between the North and the South, in spite of official obstacles, was duly presented each morning to the American public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Wanderer's Log: Being Some Memories of Travel in India, the Far East, Russia, the Mediterranean Elsewhere When I was fifteen years old, my father, most generous of men, not unnaturally alarmed at a sudden swerve in my character towards the writing of poetry and the championing of advanced causes, decided in the manner of fathers that it was time I was sent about the world to "knock the nonsense out of me." I was promptly removed from school, where, being a precocious youth, I was already well started on my way towards my ideal of becoming a classical scholar, and sent posthaste to Germany, where, it was understood, a good beginning would be made towards knocking the nonsense out of me. Something, however, seemed to go wrong with the programme. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Japanese Intervention in the Russian Far East Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japanese Intervention in the Russian Far East The conflict between Tsarist Russia and Japan, which culmi usted in actual warfare, was brought about by the identity of the policies of the two countries in Korea and Manchuria, and in part in Mongolia. Both sides, although they professed to the outer world the principles of independence, were actually aiming not only to gain a foothold in those regions, but to establish themselves there both economically and politically. When J a pan, having acquired rights to Liao-tung as a result of the war with China in 1894, was obliged to return this district to China, after the protests of Russia, Germany and France, this step, in which the chief part was played by Russia, could of course not gain the sympathies of the Japanese. All the more was this the case, when Russia soon after (in 1896) obtained a valuable concession in Manchuria, namely, the zone for the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway, two years later obtained the lease of the aforesaid Liao-tung (port Arthur) and then, after a further two years, under cover of the Boxer uprising, ocen pied Manchuria. The effort of Russia in 1901 to legalize this seizure immediately encountered the opposition of Japan. The real threat involved of as successful an aggression on the part of Tsarist Russia in Korea, manifestly imposed upon Japan the ineluctable conflict with Russia unless Japan should be will ing to reconcile herself to defeat. But the events following upon the defeat of Tsarist Russia revealed the fact that Japan, emboldened by her victory, already harbored desires of another kind: she not only was not satisfied with the victory in Korea and Southern Manchuria, not only had designs on Northern Manchuria, but began to display open tendencies to fortify herself on the Far Eastern shores of Rus sia itself. These tendencies at first manifested themselves in two dirce tions: in the effort to obtain the dominating influence in the fisheries rights in the Far East and in the attempt to force a path, first, to the Chinese Sungari, then to the Amur, afterlam obtained navigation rights. In 1907 a fisheries con vention was concluded, in accordance with the terms of the Portsmouth treaty, but the Japanese were not satisfied with the rights granted to them to undertake fishing on the Russian shores of the Okhotsk Sea, the Japan Sea and the Behring Sea (excluding bights and rivers), on terms similar to those eu joyed by Russian citizens, but also desired to have fisheries rights in the Russian bights and rivers, where, in view of the weakness of Russian capital in the Far East, such rights would be equivalent to a complete predominance of the Japanese in Russian Far Eastern fisheries. They were also more directly the vassals of one of his vassals, the Khan of the Golden Horde, who was stationed at Sarai on the lower Volga. At this period the tartar-mongols, among whom Mohammedanism was disseminated until about 1272, were still Buddhists, Shamanists, or fetich worshipers at heart very indifferent in matters of religion, and strangers to any thought of propagandism or of intolerance. They, therefore, left the Russians in undisturbed posses sion of their religion, their laws, and their own princely dynasties. They merely exacted tribute, and, in certain contingencies, military service; and every new Russian prince must go to receive his investiture either at Sarai, or even by ajourney that would occupy years, at the court of the Great Khan. There they were compelled to prostrate themselves at the foot of his throne, to defend themselves against the accusations of enemies, or of their Russian rivals; and the Khan disposed of their heads as of their crowns. Many Russian princes were executed before his eyes. Some among these, the Russian Church honors as martyrs. Book The New Far East Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Far East Classic Reprint written by Arthur Diosy and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Far East The intense interest aroused by the outbreak of the war between Japan and Russia has caused an immediate demand for a fourth edition of this book. It has been thought advisable to re-issue it absolutely without alteration and I venture to think that these pages, written in 1898, will rather gain in interest when read by the light of the stirring events which have occurred since that year. To what I have written in the Preface to the Second Edition (to be found in the next few pages) I have nothing to add, save to call attention to the three great historical changes that have since come about: - The Alliance of Britain and Japan, whereby British policy in the Far East has, at last, entered on the "Clear Course" which I have so long strenuously advocated, and which is treated of in Chapter X. The War between Russia and Japan, the inevitable struggle for preponderance in the Far East, and Japan's immediate exposure of the hollowness of Muscovite bluff. The unmistakable symptoms of the gradual Awakening of China under Japanese impulse, the Chinese turning, in their extremity, more and more towards their late foes, whose just and humane conduct in the repression of the "Boxer" outbreak of 1900 so deeply impressed the Celestial mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Far East: Its History and Its Question The aim of the present volume is to afi'ord in handy form a complete account of the history of the countries of the Far East, in so far as they have come into contact with Western civilisation. In carrying out this scheme, I have not deemed it necessary to dwell upon ancient history, beyond indicating the events which have served to bring the Occident and Orient together. I commence with an account of the earlier phases of Eastern Asia, sufficient to en able the reader to appreciate the conditions under which the Pacific borderland was first visited by the emissaries of Europe. From this point I have followed the story of the Far East in some detail, in the hope that the record thus presented may answer the requirements of the poli tical student who seeks to obtain a clear understanding of the problems involved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Japan-Russia War: An Illustrated History of the War in the Far East; The Greatest Conflict of Modern Times The author in this volume has even more completely demon strated his genius as a chronicler of war than in any of his earlier efforts. Step by step he followed the British in Africa and at the conclusion of that struggle contributed to British literature a his tory which was generally conceded to have been more accurate, more graphic, less warped by prejudices than any other. Step by step he followed the unfolding of our own Spanish war and the story of that struggle as told by Mr. Tyler became at once the standard not only in Great Britain, but in the several Continental countries in which it appeared. With the priceless experience of these two wars to ably equip him, Mr. Tyler has contributed one more narrative of a great war to military literature and the as sertion is unhesitatingly made that it will not be equalled by any of the hosts of volumes destined to be written of this memorable war.
