Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Russia Russia in Europe, however, with the exception Of Poland and Finland, is a country with one religion and one language: that is, the czar and his government recog nize and admit no other. That is the cause Of the perse cution Of the Jews, four fifths of whom dwell in the Southwest Of Russia in an area covering square miles, which is sometimes mentioned as the jewish terri tory. Every succeeding czar has tried to make all his subjects think and act in the manner prescribed by him. The process is known as Russianizing. And goes on incessantly in its different stages. Immediately after the conquest of a country, its people are assured that their religion, institutions, and language, shall be respected: the only difference is that the native Officials are displaced by Russians. This continues until Russian rule is firmly established, and no one dreams of resisting the czar. Then the Russian language displaces the native tongue, and if disturbances occur, the military is called in to inflict a terrible punishment. The loss of the native language carries with it that Of old institutions, and when the people have submitted to their fate, it is the turn of their religion. The Russian is in no hurry; he has a conviction that time has no changes in store for his empire, hence he bides his time, and is likely to succeed in his purpose. This process is now carried on in Central Asia where Russian power has found its greatest expansion in modern times. It is but fair to admit that Russian absorption there has been highly beneficial because robber tribes were reduced to law and order. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia the Eastern Question Russia is, territorially, the largest civil division of the globe. Its total superficial area is estimated at eight millions of square miles, being more than twice the area of the whole of the United States, and comprising all the north of Europe and Asia, and the north-west corner of North America. This immense territory has given to the Russian empire an importance more imaginary than real. For, as with individuals, so with nations, - nothing, to the cursory observer, invests them so much with the appearance of strength as large landed possessions. According to this idea, however, the aborigines of this western world were a very power ful people, for the whole boundless continent was theirs; and, though divided into a great variety of tribes, they were linked together by interests that made them the common foe of the white man. Nevertheless, they melted away, at his approach, like the snows of winter before the summer's sun. Something, therefore. Beside land, is requisite to national strength. The possibilities of trade in this vast territory are little known to the great mass of business men in the United States, and it is with the object of giving a general view of economic conditions in that country that this monograph has been prepared. The total area of Russia, both in Europe and Asia, is square miles, or one-seventh of the land area of the globe, while its population in 1911 was only or about 20 per square mile. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Various Countries of Europe, Asia, and Africa, Vol. 1: Russia, Tartary, and Turkey; Section 1 The unsettled state of English orthography, as far as it affects the introduction of Russian names, produces considerable embarrassment to the writer who whishes to follow a fixed mle. Upon this subject it not only happens that no two authors agree, but the same author is inconsistent. Jonas Hanway, whose writings are more accurate than those of an other English traveller who has visited Russia, ma be considered as ording, perhaps, the best model in this respect, but e is not confident.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia on the Pacific: And the Siberian Railway Here we have a prominent man upbraiding people for ignoring What is historically false. Russia has not stridden across the continent in the last twenty-eight years; she did traverse Asia very rapidly - in about half a century but it was more than two centuries ago. As I studied the history of Russia and of her expansion in Northern Asia, I had gradually to discard the prejudices and false notions Which are generally entertained about Russia in Western Europe. It is my object, therefore, to dispel in the minds of the public the errors Which I formerly entertained, and to give a clear idea of Russia's Work in the world. It is only at present that, as With Great Britain, the real mission of Russia, her extra-european and world-mission, is appearing before men's minds. For the future history of the world, the conquest of Siberia Will be more important than most of the modern history of European Russia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia in Asia: A Record and a Study 1558-1899 The growth of Asiatic Russia, while of engrossing concern to the political student, the soldier, and the commercial man, has never until now been treated on purely historical lines. My object has been to trace the successive stages of this growth, and to describe the deliberate prosecution of the policy which has largely brought it about. Russia in Asia does not profess to be more than a history, complete yet concise, of Asiatic Russia. In criticising the rival policies of Russia and England, my endeavour has been to present the clear and impar tial deduction that a careful study of those policies yields. The historical chapters are based upon the writings of more than two hundred authorities. The accounts of the numerous military expeditions have, in most cases, been drawn from Russian sources, while my references to the part played by diplomacy are grounded on official correspondence and our own Government publications. I have not occupied space with a full list of the authorities consulted, thinking it sufficient to indicate to those who may desire a closer investigation of the subject, the principal sources where verification and amplification may be found. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia in Europe and Asia There is an enormous amount of literature at the disposal of the student of Russian affairs; and yet there is really very little which satisfies one who wishes to get a comprehensive glance at the whole empire in its many and various aspects. Hare's "Studies in Russia," prepared in 1886, but republished as lately as 1904, is still the only book of its kind, and the author is so well known for his other reliable volumes of a similar character that one may safely depend upon him. But naturally this particular book is altogether inadequate now. It does not even cover the whole territory of Russia in Europe. Since Hare wrote his admirable descriptions of a few cities and of some of the famous cathedrals, churches, palaces, and other famous buildings, considerable changes have taken place. There are many cities and towns that now attract the visitor, but for which no thoroughly satisfactory guidebook is available. Even the cities that Hare thought he was discussing fairly exhaustively have grown and developed in a quarter of a century, until he himself would now scarcely recognise them. For example, the town of Rostoff is a place that deserves a visit, but there is no satisfactory description of it available to the English reader. There are a number of others which are historically or archaeologically most interesting, and the towns that have developed greatly as industrial centres are not yet sufficiently known through the medium of a guidebook. Siberia has changed so much in the last five or six years that Gerrare's "Greater Russia," frequently mentioned in the following pages, is now almost obsolete, so far as the important trans-Siberian Railway and internal improvements are concerned. Book The Boundaries of Europe

Download or read book The Boundaries of Europe written by Pietro Rossi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe’s boundaries have mainly been shaped by cultural, religious, and political conceptions rather than by geography. This volume of bilingual essays from renowned European scholars outlines the transformation of Europe’s boundaries from the fall of the ancient world to the age of decolonization, or the end of the explicit endeavor to “Europeanize” the world. From the decline of the Roman Empire to the polycentrism of today’s world, the essays span such aspects as the confrontation of Christian Europe with Islam and the changing role of the Mediterranean from “mare nostrum” to a frontier between nations. Scandinavia, eastern Europe and the Atlantic are also analyzed as boundaries in the context of exploration, migratory movements, cultural exchanges, and war. The Boundaries of Europe, edited by Pietro Rossi, is the first installment in the ALLEA book series Discourses on Intellectual Europe, which seeks to explore the question of an intrinsic or quintessential European identity in light of the rising skepticism towards Europe as an integrated cultural and intellectual region.

This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Russian History Russia of a.d. 920, newly Christianized, meant the region round Kiev, inhabited by Slavs and ruled over by the Scandinavian House of Rurik. In 1420 Russia had Moscow for her centre and the Tartars for her overlords, while her in habitants were a new and hybrid race of Slavs and Finns. Kiev, though still the object of their reverence, lay far beyond their frontier. In 1820 Alexander I., succeeding to the great Tsars Peter and Catherine, ruled over an imperial Russia which included half Europe and a still greater area in Asia. And to-day the birth or resurrection of Finland, Esthonia, Latvia, Lithu ania, Poland, and the Ukraine forces Russia to signify the Muscovite family struggling for self expression. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of Asia: A History of Russian Turkestan and the Central Asian Khanates From the Earliest Times A time when Russia's movements in the East are being watched by all with such keen interest seems a fitting one for the appearance of a work dealing with her Central Asian possessions. That eternal struggle between East and West, to quote Sir William Hunter's apt phrase, has made Russia supreme in Central Asia, as it has made England mistress of India: and thus it has come to pass that two. Of the greatest European Powers find themselves face to face on the Asiatic Continent. On the results of that contact depends the future of Asia. Ten years have elapsed since Lord Curzon of Kedleston published his work entitled Russia in Central Asia, and in the interval no book on this subject has appeared in English. The intervening period has been one of change almost of transformation - in the countries so brilliantly described by the present Viceroy of India. The authors of the present work have visited independently the land of which they write. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
