Book Russia Before and After the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Russia Before and After the War Classic Reprint written by Julius Wilhelm Albert von Eckardt and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia Before and After the War Twenty years ago, Prince Dolgorouki, the author of 'La Verite sur la Russie, ' prefaced his indictment against the administration of his country with the remark, 'A book on Russia must be by a Russian; my country resembling no other.' Largely as our knowledge of Russia has increased during this eventful interval, the observation still holds good. It is of some importance, therefore, that English readers should know that the author of the work, now translated, with some additions, from the lately published German original, not only writes with the authority of one familiar with the conditions of social and political life in Russia, but deals with the subject as a Russian. Opinions proceeding from such a source have a representative value of their own, irrespective in one sense of the views of foreign critics, but none the less indispensable for a calm and impartial estimate of the circumstances which have directed the attention of Europe to a State as unique in its composition as it is exceptional in its historical development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia and the Great War The success obtained with the British public by my work on Modern Russia, of which the second edition followed the first in the space of ten months, has inspired me with courage once more to address my readers in a book devoted to my country. The subject of this new book is Russia and the Great War. But in writing it I wished not merely to write a book for the moment ex elusively, of value only for today, and of no interest to-morrow. It is net the external and dramatic aspect of the great war waged by Russia and her Allies that interests me the most. On the contrary, my readers will find in my pages neither descriptions of battles nor tragic or picturesque narratives of the incidents of battle. My aim has been something quite different from this. I wish to inform my English readers con cerning the principal phenomena of Russian life before the War, and to explain the relations be tween these phenomena and the war itself. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the War Against Russia What do the public really care whether Lord J. Russell is the pitiable thing the Duke of Newcastle and his own speech seem to prove him to be? It may be a serious ques tion to those who, Whig-bound by the fostered prejudices of years, think there can be no progress in liberality and freedom, unless this one lord is to lead, or at least to hold the power to destroy those who won't move at his command. Does the country, using its own sober discretion, see its only safety in the rule of some one of half-a-dozen lords, who have been tried again and again, until the history of modern times is a mere kaleidoscope, show ing the shaking of these aristocratic fragments into different patterns, each the wonder of one day, the contempt of the next? Book War and Revolution in Russia 1914 1917 Classic Reprint

Download or read book War and Revolution in Russia 1914 1917 Classic Reprint written by Basil Gourko and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and Revolution in Russia, 1914-1917 IN the midst of profound peace, in the active work of economical and social reform, Russia, as by thunderbolt, was struck by the news of approaching mobilisation, and by the urgent necessity of having recourse to the sword to protect her interests and those of the other Slav nations. To define exactly the position in which the beginning of the war found Russia, it is necessary briefly to survey her political condition at the moment. The country was still feeling the disturbing effects of the Revolution of 1905 - 6. The intellectual classes which had now received access to and obtained a share in political life and legislation, were engrossed by the struggle with the Government. This tur moil centred specially in the Imperial Duma. With the opening of military action this internal strife of the parties, as in other European countries, and the striving for suprem acy between the Imperial Duma and the Government, died down at first, but later became gradually acute again. This, we observe, was the case with all our Allies and in a certain degree with our enemies. After three years of war, this struggle, becoming still more acute, brought about a crisis which ended in the Revolution of March 1917. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia and the World a Study of the War and a Statement, of the World-Problems That, Now Confront Russia, and Great Britain No one could say with whom there was war, but there certainly was war with someone. It was a terrible moment when I heard that Germany had declared war on Russia, but it was tempered by the fact that I could hardly believe the news to be true. Still, with the call to arms, my vagabondage in Central Asia came to an end for the time being. So the war came across my little thread of life. This book takes up my story on the day of mobilisa tion on the Altai Mountains. At first I thought of in cluding the whole of the year's experience and thought and impressions of my Central Asian journey in one book with my pictures and thoughts of the war. But I have put aside the earlier matter, as hardly relevant to the immediate question of how the war is affecting Russia and how Russia stands in relation to the nations she pro teets and to the world in general. Some time later I h0pe to return to the Altai village and resume my wanderings where I left off, and, when I have crossed Siberia, may perhaps present a personal impression of the Russian Empire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truth About Russia Before leaving England, I made it my business to ascertain how things looked in the eyes of political leaders of all parties. Ministers were not greatly preoccupied with foreign afiairs. Their interests were firstly Irish and secondly electoral and administrative. Do you think, I was asked, if we antici pated war, we should have reduced the navy estimates this year Our only object is peace. The Ministerial view is that, if they have laid themselves open to the reproach of risking war, they have done so solely because they loved peace so well they were willing to risk war in order to maintain the Conti neutal equilibrium. That they consciously desired war not even their worst enemies assert. But, in their exertions to maintain peace, the danger lay in the fact that they might be mistaken as to the Powers in whose support, in the interests of peace, they Should cast the weight of English influence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and Revolution in Russia: Sketches and Studies To one coming from the north, the bazaar at Ekateri nodar, where I have been marketing, is a dream of indescribable gorgeousness. Here are no shimmering silks, or many-patterned Persian carpets, or stalls stacked with priceless gems this is not the East, nor is the land of the Don Cossacks stored with ancient treasure. But such riches of the soil brought together, heaped upon the cobbles, spreading over carts and booths and streets in endless waves of colour the eye could hardly see elsewhere but here. Row upon row of melons, cantelupes and water melons, melons ribbed and melons smooth skinned, back in the sunshine, fill the hot air with their luscious scent from end to end of two hundred yards loops of onions swing lazily, While under them a fortune of cabbages display their mild charms, their tender virgin green unviolated by hand of grocer; and here is a riot of tomatoes that smile at you in outrageous profusion, and there waggons brimming with potatoes eggs enough to make a score of snowmen, and again young mountains of small cucumbers, such as are not known in England, beloved of Russians, clamouring to be eaten. And flour, fine rice from Turkestan, and fat egg plants scarcely con tained in their purple skins, the drowsy sunflower with.
