Book Russia in Europe and Asia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Russia in Europe and Asia Classic Reprint written by Joseph King Goodrich and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia in Europe and Asia The great deal that is not included in the chapters may be supplied by making use of the bibliography given at the end of this volume. It will be found that, after all, so far as the Russian people are concerned, and as the interesting customs of the land appeal to us, we cannot do much better than to depend upon the narratives and descriptions of the old authorities, Clarke, Haxthausen, Wallace, and several others. There is so much that is still refreshing and illuminating in their books, that, for the topics they discuss, we cannot do better than turn to them. To condense into one little volume the size of this, some thing even approximating to an account of the great Russian Empire, or Siberia alone, is a very audacious thing to attempt, and I trust the many imperfections may be considered chari tably. One great difficulty that has constantly faced me is the instability of conditions in those parts of Asia wherein Russia is an important factor. Even while writing, the changes which are taking place, and others that must be considered more than mere possibilities, present a difficulty that is discouraging to an author. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Russia Russia in Europe, however, with the exception Of Poland and Finland, is a country with one religion and one language: that is, the czar and his government recog nize and admit no other. That is the cause Of the perse cution Of the Jews, four fifths of whom dwell in the Southwest Of Russia in an area covering square miles, which is sometimes mentioned as the jewish terri tory. Every succeeding czar has tried to make all his subjects think and act in the manner prescribed by him. The process is known as Russianizing. And goes on incessantly in its different stages. Immediately after the conquest of a country, its people are assured that their religion, institutions, and language, shall be respected: the only difference is that the native Officials are displaced by Russians. This continues until Russian rule is firmly established, and no one dreams of resisting the czar. Then the Russian language displaces the native tongue, and if disturbances occur, the military is called in to inflict a terrible punishment. The loss of the native language carries with it that Of old institutions, and when the people have submitted to their fate, it is the turn of their religion. The Russian is in no hurry; he has a conviction that time has no changes in store for his empire, hence he bides his time, and is likely to succeed in his purpose. This process is now carried on in Central Asia where Russian power has found its greatest expansion in modern times. It is but fair to admit that Russian absorption there has been highly beneficial because robber tribes were reduced to law and order. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia and Britain If the future of the world lies in the men of thejsoil, if it lies in the spread of brotherhood, if it lies in religion, as the past has lain, then Russia has great and precious treasures to bring to the building of the new age. She has many faults - there is something mediaeval in the sharp mixture of violent sins and violent virtues, of unworthy acts and ecstasies of worship; her peasants are not saints, though they are the stuff from which saints are often made - their character has been marred by drunkenness and its resultant crimes her Government has been guilty of base blunders, of cruel and foolish policies of repression, her statesmen have sometimes run after wild and aggressive ambitions acts of mediaeval savagery are nearer in her history than in ours. All Europe has heard of the Tatar in the Russian character. All Europe has heard of the worst in Russia of the knout, of serrdom, of exile to Siberia, of pogroms. Book Russia Germany and the Eastern Question Classic Reprint

Download or read book Russia Germany and the Eastern Question Classic Reprint written by Gustav Diezel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia, Germany, and the Eastern Question The inauspicious experiences of the last few years have already in many minds given birth to such painful misgivings as to our own strength, and to such exaggerated notions as to the power of Russia, that. Our impending abasement by this power, which is represented as advancing under the form of inex orable destiny, has been unreservedly prognosti cated 3 and the regeneration of Europe through means of Russia has been pointed out as the last hope remaining to us. On the other hand many persons who either pretend to, or sincerely entertain a very contemptuous opinion of the colossus with the feet of clay, treat the matter so lightly, 0p posing to the most evident and most incontestable facts nothing but empty words and hackneyed phrases, that the contrary hopes and fears are only confirmed by their manner of proceeding. It is high time to form a clear conception of the Busman state, with its enormous pretensions and the founda tion on which alone these can be based, and to con sider with unbiassed mind what is the position of Western Europe, and more particularly of Germany, in relation to this state. The foundation on which the Russian state may be said to have been erected rather than to have arisen, is the Russian nation-a ality. Download or read book Russia Before and After the War Classic Reprint written by Julius Wilhelm Albert von Eckardt and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia Before and After the War Twenty years ago, Prince Dolgorouki, the author of 'La Verite sur la Russie, ' prefaced his indictment against the administration of his country with the remark, 'A book on Russia must be by a Russian; my country resembling no other.' Largely as our knowledge of Russia has increased during this eventful interval, the observation still holds good. It is of some importance, therefore, that English readers should know that the author of the work, now translated, with some additions, from the lately published German original, not only writes with the authority of one familiar with the conditions of social and political life in Russia, but deals with the subject as a Russian. Opinions proceeding from such a source have a representative value of their own, irrespective in one sense of the views of foreign critics, but none the less indispensable for a calm and impartial estimate of the circumstances which have directed the attention of Europe to a State as unique in its composition as it is exceptional in its historical development.
